Fruits Basket Manga Is Back

Fruits Basket Manga Is Back

Hey gang! I’m a big fan of the Fruits Basket manga, and I like the anime (hate the ending though). I’m told this was TokyoPop’s biggest title, and when TokyoPop went under, I could not understand why no one license-rescued it. Now, at long last, the Fruits Basket manga has been rescued by Yen Press…after a fashion.

From Yen Press.

What Yen Press has licensed isn’t the original Fruits Basket manga that TokyoPop licensed, but rather the re-release in Japan. So in that sense, it is a new license rather than a license rescue, but the fact is that at long last, Fruits Basket is going to be back for purchase.

That being said, it isn’t all good news. The Twins report that they reached out in order to be able to redo their original translation and make it better, but were told that Yen Press weren’t looking for translators. Considering that The Twins were rather bummed about this, I decided to ask if Yen Press would be using their original translation from TokyoPop.

Nope, they’re doing a whole new translation which is not going to be written by us. It’s a bummer because we wanted to fix our translation, since we’ve grown so much since we first translated it, but we’re getting over it.

I’m bummed because it was their translation of Fruits Basket that made me a fan of The Twins. I’d prefer it if they’d been allowed to have another go at it, but alas, that’s not to be.  I guess that also means they won’t be doing Fruits Basket Another, should Yen Press license it.

Speaking of which, I’m planning to take a look-see at this new sequel manga from Takaya-sensei and see what’s up. I gather that Fruits Basket Another won’t deal with the characters from Fruits Basket, but rather their children.

So, its good news that folks will be able to once again buy Fruits Basket, but it is a bummer that The Twins won’t get to work on it again.

I haven’t read it myself to corroborate, but I had heard it would take place shortly after the MC’s graduated (possibly featuring cameos, but no more). I can see how that might work out better if Sensei really does want to tell a new story rather than a continuation of the old one. Plus, you never know… we might get to learn more about the younger ones (Momiji, Kisa, the bratty sheep kid, and Yuki’s gf IIRC).

Likewise. I can understand why they would prefer people they know over people whose reputation is stellar… it’s very human. We can hope it won’t have nearly as much of the sad effects that we’ve seen with Japanese companies insisting on using their own translations, but I still worry. “If it ain’t broke” and all that.

Yen Press has usually been really good about their manga translations. I’ve had a few quibbles at times.

Yen Press holds the highest quality for manga releases. The large omnibus hardback for Emma, the full colour versions of highschool of the dead. The license is in the best hands.
