Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R 02 Review
ナースウィッチ小麦ちゃんR episode 02

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R 02As Kokona prepares for school in her dorm room, she keeps having a feeling of being watched and even has her tamago roll stolen from her bento box. On the way to school, the feelings continue. They continue while she’s in school and at one point, her friends are present when a weird noise is heard coming from a storage locker in the classroom. Speculation rises to a stalker, given that Komugi and Kokona are idols, so Komugi opens the locker, but there’s nothing. After school, Konoka does a variety show, after which, her manager takes her to the Love Pro production company HQ, where she has a talk with the company president MITAKA Ai, a former idol. Ai vows to increase security around Kokona since Kokona’s wealthy parents have entrusted their daughter to her.

Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R 02At a traffic safety event, Kokona is the star with Komugi and others from their production company in support. After a short bicycle safety film she stars in is shown, Kokona heads backstage, where a hammer nearly falls on her. She’s panicked and goes to her dressing room. There, a tanuki looking critter named Tanu-P (who ends his sentences with “poko”) says he’s been watching her and feels she’s the next magical Tombo-E Girl. Kokona agrees to help as a Fan-C card turns a police car into a monster. Usa-P forces Komugi to get into the fray as her Magical Nurse self, but she’s immediately snared. Kokona, as Magical Maid steps in, but initially fails. This causes a switch to flip in Kokona and she becomes a sadistic person to defeat the Fan-C card. Usa-P and Tanu-P are rivals, but Komugi isn’t interested in fighting Magical Maid. Kokona attacks Magical Nurse and snares her before leaving. Kokona transforms back, but has no memories of her sadistic time. Meanwhile, President Ai reports a real stalker was captured.

Thoughts/Review:

So, the writers here are going to mirror the original Nurse Witch Komugi-chan and have Komugi’s best friend be her magic girl rival, complete with the haughty, cliched villain girl laugh, then have Kokona forget everything at the end. Oh yeah, and they are going to have Kokona and Komugi not recognize each other in their magical girl gear ’cause reasons. Man, I feel like it is the early 90s so badly because of this. 😆

That all being said, in a weird sort of way, it makes sense that Kokona becomes this kind of sadistic magic girl. For starters, we learned that she’s a genius ojousama character who’s always acted prim and proper because that’s what was expected of her. As Magical Maid Kokona, she can be naughty while collecting these Fan-C cards, thus making her not a villain (as was the case in the original Komugi-chan OVAs), but merely a sadistic rival for Komugi. I can live with that, even if everything does feel like the 90s with a modern art style and animation.

I got a kick out of the narrative that Komugi is going about capturing the Fan-C cards so slowly, she’ll be a grandma before they are all caught.

Also, I got a kick out of the fact that Komugi wasn’t interested in this whole rivalry thing. Usa-P is all hot to trot and Komugi is like, “The monster is defeated, so who cares?” 😆

And there’s still rapper girl, yo!

In the end, the 90s are the feel here, but this wasn’t a horrible episode. I’m curious to see where it goes.
