Sweetness and Lightning 07
Amaama to Inazuma episode 07

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Kouhei is sick, so a worried Tsumugi takes courage from a magic girl anime and sneaks out to get help from Kotori. Along the way, she sings and imagines walking the white line on the street is the safe path through shark infested waters. Eventually, she reaches Kotori’s mother’s restaurant. The door is closed, but when Tsumugi calls for Kotori-chan, Kotori comes down and lets her in. Kotori fills a bag with supplies and starts walking Tsumugi home when they encounter a worried Kouhei. He scolds Tsumugi, which causes her to cry and throw a fit. They return to Kotori’s place, where eventually father and daughter make up as Kotori prepares Gohei Mochi.

Thoughts/Review:

Man, this episode certainly tugged at the heartstrings. I teared up for sure during this episode, but in a non-depressing way. It was also devastatingly cute at times as well.

I’ve recently purchased the first volume of the Sweetness and Lightning manga and though I’ve not read it, I did skim through it. So I knew there was a story about illness there, but that’s not the story that got animated here. I haven’t read ahead with the Crunchyroll chapters either (I’m starting to think I should), so I don’t know if this episode comes from a chapter of the manga I haven’t seen or not.

Regardless, Tsumugi takes center stage in Sweetness and Lightning 07. Her deciding to go out on her own reminded me of Yotsuba from the Yotsuba&! manga. However, having Tsumugi imagine she’s walking on a path over shark infested waters while singing about it made Tsumugi’s adventure more adorable. This may have been the cutest moment in anime that I’ve ever seen.

Ditto her seeing a pterodactyl.

And then there is the encounter with the dog named Kumo (Bear).

Even though this is an anime, I couldn’t help but feel for Tsumugi’s safety as she did her adventure to Kotori’s place. I felt the anime did a nice job of allowing people to help Tsumugi at times, but also allow her to have an encounter that wasn’t so pleasant.

Considering Tsumugi’s sole purpose is to get help for her sick dad, I knew what the outcome would be as soon as Kouhei woke up. Were Kotori my daughter, I’d be worried sick when I discovered she’d left the house. So I completely understand Kouhei’s response. Naturally, I’d like to think I would have been better and not caused a scene.

Still, at the end of the day, it is delightful to see Tsumugi and Kouhei make up. Daw!

And poor Kotori with the rice. The cooking part of this episode is more of an afterthought, unlike previous episodes. That kinda makes me think this episode may have been an anime only episode and not one from the manga. If that’s true, I’m not sure why this would be, especially since just thumbing through volume 1, I see stories that were skipped. 🙁

In the end, Sweetness and Lightning 07 brings on the “feels” as they say. Tsumugi is so adorable that her happiness makes me smile and her sadness makes me cry.
