UQ Holder Chapter 137 SPOILER Images

Here is some SPOILER info for the upcoming UQ Holder Chapter 137, courtesy of 2cat.  (My review of UQ Holder Chapter 137 should come out as soon as they appear on Crunchyroll, depending on when Crunchyroll publishes the chapter.)

UQ HOLDER Chapter 137 SPOILERS

The UQ Holder Chapter 137 goodness begins. It figures that the spoiler images would come out when I was asleep, followed by morning appointments I couldn’t escape. But here they are at last.

Chachazero! I still hate Akamatsu-sensei for what he did to her in the first chapter of UQ Holder. Still, looks like she is around at Nagi’s old place. But why?

And then there’s the troll of the butler dude at Nagi’s place, followed by Dana’s return and apparently a timeline explanation of sorts.

Finally, here’s the results of the popularity contest.

Some interesting things here, though I’m kinda disappointed the… butler? Wasn’t anyone from Negima, although he does slightly resemble Graf Wilhelm. Looks like Negi turns down Yue and Nodoka in the last page. Big mistake in my opinion but I’m slightly biased. I’ve always wondered if Yue and Nodoka hooked up with each other after Negi turned them down.

I wonder if Kirie won the poll because she’s been the focal point of the series for some time now and recency bias is in effect here. I like Kuro/Karin more personally… Will be interested to see what the whole chapter looks like.

They just followed Negi around. 😉 Or, Nodoka went into space and Yue opened a detective agency. 😛

Bias would be my vote. Akamatsu-sensei has been servicing her heavily as well.

      • Yue Ayase says:

I think back to their interactions in the final chapter and how they were definitely carrying a yuri vibe to them. Plus there’s always Nodoka’s “solution”. While there wasn’t an air nearly as strong as Konoka/Setsuna there was always a little teasing between the two. The fact they share perception now only makes me wonder further….

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I think they were cruising for Negi so hard, they couldn’t see anything else. That’s why they are with him today.

          • Yue Ayase says:

I do think they’re still very devoted to him but the thought of them not marrying anyone because of that is really depressing.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

Some folks are like that though. They devote their lives to a cause rather than to marriage.

  2. Anonymous says:

    Y’know, that could be Chamo.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’m thinking you may have a good point, unless Akamatsu-sensei is trolling us again. Butler’s panty skills aside, the touching moment he had with Chachazero is what made me think, “Hmmmm…remember how close Chachazero and Chamo were?”

  3. magine says:

In this chapter, there is nostalgia.
Chachazero! You are alive! Touta has to take Chachazero and carry her to UQ holder for that Evangeline wakes her. Santa? What is he doing there?

Oh my… A pokem- I mean, Dana showed up, Dana seems to know Negi’s past, Dana knows everything, Dana is life Dana is love XD

who is the butler? Kamo? OK no XD Of all the people I thought that might be, in the end was none of them.

The picture Chachazero with Kamo, there she has four wings, Chachazero evolved.
Does anyone know what’s written? (I have the impression that there is a NegixEva and KamoxChachazero)

Is that what the manga said, or is that just speculation? Just curious. I’m hoping to see Chachazero return, though I’ve always thought that Akamatsu-sensei ditched her ’cause she’s a scene stealer.

who is the butler? Kamo? OK no XD Of all the people I thought that might be, in the end was none of them.

Unless we are being trolled, I think it is Chamo. After all, the two were quite close.

I hadn’t noticed that until you mentioned it. Interesting.

      • magine says:

“Is that what the manga said, or is that just speculation?”
It doesn’t say it in the manga, I wrote it because I would like it to happen.

“Unless we are being trolled, I think it is Chamo. After all, the two were quite close.”
Lol I put it as a joke, but if it really he is Kamo, it would surprise me a lot, Apart, would the Pactios return? I always wondered if Kamo was the only one who could do the pactio circles.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

Ah, OK. I heard from somewhere that Chachazero may be “dead” for good, which would irritate me, but not surprise me.

Apart, would the Pactios return? I always wondered if Kamo was the only one who could do the pactio circles.

Pactiones have already returned with Ayaka showing she still has her active card. But I know what you mean — new pactiones with the UQH bunch.

As to Chamo and the magic mandalas, he only did them ’cause he got paid for every pactio formed by Negi. On the magic world, I believe some additional pactiones were done in shops.

Finally The biggest question ist answered

  5. Tanuki says:

I knew it !!!, god dammit troll Akamatsu.

  6. Dargor says:

Go away Dana, you ruined Eva the last time you showed up.

And yeah, no surprise about Kirie, she’s the only one that has had any screentime in forever. Touta being second would be surprising, except for the fact that UQ Holder virtually has no characters at this point beyond Kirie, Touta, and Eva.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Actually, I was surprised by Kirie being #1 by such a wide margin. I know she’s been serviced like mad, but I guess I’m not into megane-tsundere-loli girls.

    • OverMaster says:

I’d say Evangeline has ruined herself though her own behavior. I don’t fault Dana for it, she’s one of the few UQ original characters worth anything, even if it’s true she feels shoehorned into Eva’s past (but not more than Karin, who almost makes no sense or even tries to).

Dana and Karin would have worked out better as characters in a non Negima related story, that’s what I guess I’m trying to say.

Anyway, this seems to be another round of ‘detached character gives Touta a look beyond time and space to fill on Touta in details of Negi’s life’, which feels like such an ugly violation of the Show Don’t Tell rule. Negi and Touta don’t have a honest, real emotional connection between them, they have never interacted at all out of a battlefield and briefly, so these repeated attempts to make Touta care or feel sorry about Negi through narrative shortcuts just feel plain insincere and shallow.

      • Dargor says:

Nah, I’m more then willing to put blame on Dana for this. Without her, that god awful forced romance fanfic with Touta wouldn’t have happened. The character is alright, but her trying to fill the Negima!Eva/Rakan void of zany over the top, super powerful but neutral character is really kind of old now.

  7. Mattcgw says:

Chapter is out on Amazon. Three key points. 1. Kotaro appears, which makes me quite happy because IF this gets adapted, marina Inoue will reprise her role; she is fantastic and could be a a good Dana (also Dana’s name still isn’t explained/romaninzied properly, but there was a TL note about 4D. So, great consisting there.)

2 . Mizore appeared, front and centre of the panel, so this chapter is an instant 8 for me.

    3. Ballsy move, by Akamatsu-Sensei. But not particularly interesting, compared to Konoka that would be a fascinating narrative/lore for UQ holder to explore the impact of two great equals (in theory, if Sensei remembers. It would seem he probably would. Unlike Toriyama, with saiyan tails, he forgot to draw them.) joining together.

    • Yue Ayase says:

I can’t find it for purchase today, just tomorrow….

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      1. Kotaro appears, which makes me quite happy

      Whoa! OK. That’s cool.

Mizore appeared, front and centre of the panel, so this chapter is an instant 8 for me.

      Haha! Also cool.

  8. Shlugo says:

So, if I’m interpreting those correctly, UQ Holder actually takes place in the main timeline? Because if so, Holy happy ending override Batman!

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I haven’t read the chapter yet, so I’m not sure, but I think that’s possibly correct.

      • Shlugo says:

I’m basing it on what looks like a flashback to Asuna returning from future. If I’m right… wow, a dick move on the author’s part.

        • OverMaster says:

This being the Negima End timeline would bring a continuity mistake with Sayo, who was supposed to have passed on with Asakura’s end help in Negima’s epilogue, yet here hasn’t moved on and Asakura is presumably long gone already.

Not to mention there’s the matter of the Mage of the Beginning being dealt with in Negima but not in UQ Holder, unless the implication is he-she somehow returned, which would deny everything the Negima cast ever achieved. Even so, so far it looks like the Thousand Master was saved in Negima but not in UQ Holder.

          • OverMaster says:

Sorry, I meant ‘Asakura’s help’, not ‘Asakura’s end’.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

            I fixed that. 🙂

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, I’m still hoping for an option where Nagi is saved in whatever timeline we are currently in. Although Akamatsu-sensei can provide all kinds of evidence to support one theory or the other (and then troll fans), I’m thinking that the reason we’ve seen Nagi with Negi a couple of times is because Nagi is still alive somehow and still connected to MotB. Plus, I find it hard to believe that Negi would opt to kill his father. It doesn’t fit Negi’s character, especially considering his solution to Fate and CE.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

While it is highly likely we are in the “main” timeline, I’m also hoping that because of Kirie, we are actually in some other timeline. Kirie’s ability allows them to travel multiple timelines when she does a reset. I know some feel that when she resets, the previous timeline was destroyed, but that makes no sense. After all, we know that Eva hopped from timeline to timeline, so multiple timelines exist in parallel. I see Kirie’s ability is just being able to travel down one of the multiple timelines created for every decision made by going back on the path and taking a different route.

  9. Yue Ayase says:

Read the chapter. Nice to see our good old panty-thieving friend Chamo again. UQ is seriously lacking in the comedy department and you could always count on Chamo for a good laugh. Glad the other characters at least appear in this chapter. I’m really quite tired of Kirie-centric chapters.

    Things I noticed:

When Chamo is talking about Chachazero, he’s certainly talking about an old friend but it’s subtly implied that there might’ve been more there. It’s also still not entirely clear if the old man is Chamo’s true form or just an illusionary spell. He still identifies as an elf so I’m leaning towards the latter. Either way Chamo’s picked up some quality magic over the years so he can actually attack now. While it’s always nice to see old Negima characters, seeing Chamo again is truly a sight for sore eyes. He was an underrated part of Negima and I hope he sticks around for awhile.

Dana speaks of the “happy route” with mocking intent, echoing the fans’ sentiment of it. Also some nice gaming terms she uses (speedrun, cheat code). While I’m not the biggest fan of hers, it’s nice to see her again too.

Touta remarks that in the “Happy route” there’s no need for him, since Asuna is still around. So obviously Touta doesn’t exist on that route. It kind of harkens back to Cosmo Entelechia, a perfect world where there are no issues. In Negi’s perfect world, Fate and co were completely defeated and Nagi/Arika/Negi lived happily, at the expense of Fate himself. And in this timeline, Negi/Asuna live out the rest of their days in peace, at least after the final defeat of the Lifemaker. What really makes this interesting is almost the entire class gets a happy ending…. except Chisame. She’s the only one who specifically does not get a happy ending of some kind. It’s a foregone conclusion that Negi and her won’t end up together, at least in the “perfect end”.

On a personal note, seeing Negi turn down both Nodoka and Yue really tugs at my heart. Of course we already knew this was going to happen, the ending of Negima explicitly pointed it out. Interesting how Nodoka apparently discussed her “solution” with Yue and she was okay with it. Again I still think they hook up somewhere down the line. The signs are all there of two girls who love and care deeply for each other. Hell, for me, it’s been there since the moment they became friends.

I liked this chapter for a few reasons but at the same time it pains me to no end that Negima’s ending was so bloody unsatisfactory. So many untold stories and unanswered questions that, while UQ has been putting some of them to rest, still could’ve been resolved had things not gone bad. Part of me wants more Negima stories and another wants to see more UQ stuff… At this point UQ Holder is basically two separate stories in one series. I hope Akamatsu can juggle both but with the series shifting to monthly there likely isn’t time for both series to have their satisfying conclusion. Who knows how much longer this series continues? I’d say probably 2 years at most.

Here’s hoping the anime is successful and maybe Negima will get the proper animated adaptation it so richly deserves.

    • Yue Ayase says:

Oh, and perhaps to the surprise of no one the character poll wasn’t included in the English release.

      • Yue Ayase says:

The UQ site just updated with cast info, even more than the chapter itself. The returning Negima cast members (Negi, Sayo, Yue, Asuna, Chachamaru, Makie (still don’t know why she of all characters is here), Mana, Nodoka, Ayaka, and Fate) will all be played by their previous voice actors.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, which is a bummer, but then it is a magazine thing. Hopefully it is included in the volume release.

    • ryuya says:

Chisame doesn’t get a happy ending? What do you mean? In te Negima ending she was satisfied with her life. She even showed up during the Ala Rubra and Ala Alba meeting.

    • Dargor says:

I think the “Happy route” is a bit of a low blow on Akamatsu’s part. Its what happens when you decide to end a story with next to no exposition and focusing on another series, so of course its going to come off as half assed. Now that more then anything is what bugs me the most, beyond UQ Holder being a half assed series on its own.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

When one decides to end a story at what seems like the drip of a dime, then yeah, the story resolution will be subpar at best. Basically, Akamatsu-sensei decided to end it, then say, “Fine. And they all lived happily ever after ’cause reasons.” Not that I’m opposed to happy endings. Far from it. But in Negima’s case, that manga had tons more story to tell and resolve, but instead, we jumped to the last page of the story.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

UQ is seriously lacking in the comedy department and you could always count on Chamo for a good laugh.

Chamo and some of the outlandish, bloodthirsty things Chachazero would say.

When Chamo is talking about Chachazero, he’s certainly talking about an old friend but it’s subtly implied that there might’ve been more there.

I think there was more there, to the extent that an ermine and a living doll can have something more. Chachazero was pretty sadistic to most folks. She was never that way with Chamo. Indeed, she once brought out a bottle of booze for him on her own volition. And she carried him around at one point (on her hat). The two liked each other a lot, but alas, Akamatsu-sensei didn’t explore that ’cause Chachazero would have stolen the manga.

He still identifies as an elf so I’m leaning towards the latter.

Elves were never really defined in Negima. Akamatsu-sensei used a lot of Western fantasy elements, such as the dragons, wyverns, dryads, etc. I had often wondered if Chamo being an ermine was due to a punishment, since Negi was threatened with being turned into an ermine as punishment. But Akamatsu-sensei never explored that and if ermine are the elves of the Akamatsu-verse, I find that kinda weak.

I liked this chapter for a few reasons but at the same time it pains me to no end that Negima’s ending was so bloody unsatisfactory.

Agreed. That’s why I’m fine with wrapping up the Negima storyline in UQH.

At this point UQ Holder is basically two separate stories in one series. I hope Akamatsu can juggle both but with the series shifting to monthly there likely isn’t time for both series to have their satisfying conclusion. Who knows how much longer this series continues? I’d say probably 2 years at most.

Right now, I think the focus is on wrapping up the Negima storyline. If at that point, the anime has done well and the manga sales have improved, then Akamatsu-sensei can move UQH beyond Negima. Otherwise, two years may be a bit optimistic.
