UQ Holder Chapter 150

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

UQ Holder Chapter 150Eva, in her Yukihime form, gets up as the final battle against the Mage of the Beginning starts over Saturn. She’s greeted by Mana and Zazie before heading out with Chachazero. The two discuss Eva’s new business she’s going to run for immortals. Chachazero comes up with the name UQ Holder as the term “yuukyuu” means “a really long time in Japanese.

Eva thinks back to when Negi first took her to the island where he had the Senkyoukan built for the purpose of giving youkai and immortals to reside. These folks would be part of a company or organization. Chachamaru arrives with Chamo and Chachazero with news on MotB, leading to the final battle.

During the battle, Negi is by himself and being overrun, so Chachazero sacrifices herself to save him. She lets Negi know before “dying.” Chamo takes Chachazero’s body as Eva helps him in the battle that eventually failed with Negi being possessed.

Ten years after the battle, Eva goes to the Amater Industrial Research Lab #7 in Amano-Mihashira City, Eva joins the female Konoe as they observe Touta and other (clone) kids at play. Konoe says that the kids likely won’t survive.

Eva pays Fate a visit, where he declares the Touta experiment a failure. But research moves forward with a bunch of children being grown in large containers.

Four years later, Fate gets word of an escaped clone and the scene made to look like a death while the search continues. Eva, now Yukihime storms in to see Fate, showing proof that the Negi clones are being used in battlefields all over. Fate explains that this is business and that the use of immortal clone soldiers gives them data for the failed Touta experiment. Yukihime questions these actions.

Yukihime decides that she can defeat Ialda using the Manus Jaldae spell. In return, she wants Fate to stop the cloning project. Fate rejects this, doubting her ability to come through since Negi failed using the spell. Fate uses technology to rob Yukihime of her magic power, but before Fate can do anything, four members of UQ Holder, including Jinbee and Gengorou appear to defend her. Since Fate doesn’t like the odds, so he allows them to leave.

In the present, Chachazero shuts down, ending the story. Eva discovers that the rest of UQ Holder is there and has seen the story. Later, Kuroumaru and Touta are on the beach and discuss things.

Thoughts/Review:

Well, I’m running behind again thanks to real life, but that aside, UQ Holder Chapter 150 was good stuff!

Chachazero’s “Death”

When Akamatsu-sensei started UQ Holder, he immediately got rid of Chachazero, implying that Eva just grew tired of the bloodthirsty awesome doll and just abandoned her. That angered me to no end back then. I know Akamatsu-sensei wanted to be rid of Chachazero because she is a scene stealer. Her awesomeness is…well, awesome. Sadly, Chachazero trumps everyone, which is why Akamatsu-sensei used her sparingly in Negima!, and then “forgot” her completely as things wound down.

I loved seeing the discussion between Chachazero and Eva. It was awesome seeing that Chachazero was the one who came up with the name UQ Holder. Then she turns around and complains that they are being “goodies.” Its those little moments that make Chachazero so awesome. She speaks her mind and doesn’t hold back. She’s evil but honest.

This conversation made her “death” have more impact with me. She gets angry with Negi for doing what he told them not to do. She then comes in and sacrifices herself when Negi is about to be taken from behind. Chachazero’s reasoning shows how much she does care for her Master, and because Eva cares for Negi, Chachazero does as well. OK, I got a bit teary as Chachazero “died.”

I really hope that Akamatsu-sensei brings Chachazero back. I know she’s a scene stealer, but she’s too awesome to not be in UQ Holder as Eva’s partner. Plus, assuming Akamatsu-sensei isn’t going to wrap up the manga after finishing all these plot threads, Chachazero can stir the pot in a comedic sense.

Fate’s Plan; Eva’s Plan

Fate is playing a dangerous game with his immortal soldier’s scheme. I get what he’s trying to do. By putting these “Negi clones” (who aren’t physical clones at all) into combat and such, the data can be used to create the ultimate “clone” to defeat MotB. But as Eva points out, there’s no way to control them. But, Fate wants to do something that would save Negi’s life.

Eva, on the other hand, made a promise to Negi that she would kill him if things went south. She didn’t go through with that promise because she initially bought into Fate’s plan to save Negi. I can understand and appreciate that. But now we know why Eva decided to go ahead and kill Negi as he requested, after seeing how barbaric Fate’s plan truly was.

I presume the tanned girl in the evidence Touta brought is a young Cutlass. This felt like Akamatsu-sensei paying tribute to Gunslinger Girl and the character of Triela.

The Original UQ Holder

Since UQ Holder‘s launch, there have been characters who were in the promo art who’ve yet to show up in a meaningful way in the manga. We see Juuzo and “Bishounen-san” make a cameo in the flashback, but in a meaningful way. I hope we get to explore more about them and that they show up down the road.

UQ Holder Chapter 150

And speaking of the original UQ Holder organization, I liked how Akamatsu-sensei showed us how Negi was the one to buy the island and then have the Senkyoukan built on it.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

I need to wrap up my review of UQ Holder Chapter 150 before more stupidity gets in the way.

  • I liked seeing Mana and Zazie, even if only in a cameo.
  • As expected, Akamatsu-sensei left it to the imagination of the readers on whether Eva and Negi spent the night together or not.
  • Interesting how Fate used the future-tech stuff we saw in Negima! to nullify magic. I wonder if Akamatsu-sensei will show this future-tech stuff getting sent to the past for Negi to encounter there.
  • I’m told that Akamatsu-sensei is going to use the next chapter to explore Kuroumaru. I hope that’s the case. Even if it takes the rest of this year or more, I want Kuroumaru’s past explored in depth.
  • Oh! So I don’t forget, a big shout out to Crunchyroll for doing a pretty good job on all the 2-page spreads. Someone actually bothered to keep them together nicely rather than have then not match up at all.

In the end, UQ Holder Chapter 150 ended up being quite good. I love this look back at the past. I hope Akamatsu-sensei will take his time and give us good character exploration, growth, and a good story to boot.

I have a question. So yukihime woke up after she had some love dovey time with Negi or was their a time skip after that and it just fast forwarded to the battle on Saturn?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I don’t think there was a time skip. My own belief is that nothing happened between Eva and Negi, based on him wanting so desperately to do something for Nagi and Eva. But Akamatsu-sensei has left that to our imagination.

      • Rob C. says:

I think your in denial about Negai and Eva’s evening together. Something else happened. You should ask Akamatsu-sensei on his twitter feed. Foreshadowing was enough.

      • Rob C. says:

It’s interesting situation Akamatsu-sensei painted for us. Flashback shows how they got to the present, Where the clones thing came from. However, Touta is natural born. He had mother at least. IF his mother was Konoe from Class 3A, he should ALSO have something Akamatsu-sensei hadn’t addressed. Konoka Konoe is a descendant of long line of Magicians. This would be true unless he was just implanted into Konoka Konoe. We may never know until sensei writes it.

Definately feels like were in later stages of “End Game” for UQ Holder, unless Akamatsu-sensei decides he just making this whole mess of wrapping up things just a story arc to deal with Negai’s fate.

He could continue the series as side story or something, but Touta has unfairly lost his main character status with sheer weight of all this old Negami character injection into the plot to try save the manga.

I wanted him to wander more, explore the solar system and world, Maybe make slight difference in a horrible shaped out outcome from altered version Negai Manga’s ending.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

          However, Touta is natural born.

Maybe. This Touta may be a clone of the original Touta. The timeline doesn’t seem to quite add up.

20 years ago: “Final” battle with MotB in which Negi is possessed.
10 years ago: Female Konoe is with Eva, observing “clones” that appears to include a young child Touta. Touta is stated to be a failed experiment by Fate and Fate reveals that he is birthing new children via artificial means, surprising Eva.
6 years ago: A clone escapes. Eva confronts Fate and decides to oppose him.

Now, assuming the escaped clone is Touta, That would mean that Touta and Eva left the village four years ago. We don’t know how long they were on the road (I can’t imagine it was all that long), and taking into account that Touta and company trained with Dana for many months (and the few months spent doing other things), I’m not quite filling the six year gap from the clone escaping to present. But Akamatsu-sensei may be playing a bit loose with the timeline (or I’m just really bad with math).

Definately feels like were in later stages of “End Game” for UQ Holder, unless Akamatsu-sensei decides he just making this whole mess of wrapping up things just a story arc to deal with Negai’s fate.

Yeah, that’s kinda been my feeling. Assuming Akamatsu-sensei is winding down UQ Holder, I don’t think it is something that is going to just be rushed. I suspect that Akamatsu-sensei is being given all the time he wants to wrap up everything and bring the manga to an end. That may take a few years, but that’s how I’m sensing things.

He could continue the series as side story or something, but Touta has unfairly lost his main character status with sheer weight of all this old Negami character injection into the plot to try save the manga.

Unfortunately, Sensei hosed Touta early on by making him a Mary Sue character. In Negima!, Negi avoided the Mary Sue tag because (1) he had a tragedy in his early days that gave him sharp focus and drive to become a massively powerful mage and (2) he studied and worked like crazy to become the best of the best. Touta was just, “Yeah, I saw someone do something once, so I copied them and became proficient in it. A tiny bit of training and I’ve mastered it, but I don’t care about training.”

Fortunately, Akamatsu-sensei changed Touta so that now, he’s not a character that irritates the crap out of me. However, I think the damage was done and to be honest, UQ Holder doesn’t need Touta to be the MC. We first saw that with the Santa-Sayoko arc, where Santa took the MC spot for a while and that was quite good. UQ Holder could do story arcs where Kuroumaru, Karin, or the like could take over the MC spot for a time.

I think eva’s thoughts have said it all, most don’t have anything to do with xxx. It’s just a farewell kiss

  2. Yue Ayase says:

Would’ve been nice to see the other Holders actually do something but it was an alright chapter overall. Back to the main story I guess unless Kuromaru’s chapter is next like I’ve heard.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

What this backstory arc has shown me is that the UQ Holder story doesn’t have to stay focused on Touta to be good. Akamatsu-sensei could use this to explore other characters, starting with Kuroumaru, but also include the two mystery immortals we know next to nothing about.

      • Yue Ayase says:

You’re not wrong but that Jinbei/Gengorou chapter showed us that as well. Ken’s strength has always been his character writing and UQ has many interesting characters that aren’t Touta and Kirie. I would love a chapter or two dedicated fully to Kuromaru. Or any of the other numbers, really.

  3. Robert says:

Fate had been using the Negi clones to be Immortal Soldiers. Yukihime/Eva was developing the clones as a way to defeat the Mage of the Beginning. Fate and Yukihime/Eva have their own ways to defeat the MOB.

When it comes to the next chapter, it is a good ideal to focus on Kuromaru’s past because he is an important character. After the Kuromaru’s chapter, I want to know what happen to Asuna. She is likely asleep in the UQ -verse like in the Negi-verse.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I want to know what happen to Asuna. She is likely asleep in the UQ -verse like in the Negi-verse.

I believe her body is still “asleep” on Mars, but she projected herself out and is now with Negi and the others (still not physically, just mentally).

  4. Sagara14 says:

I can see why fate do that… I get it. Well…anyway , I almost forgot about the other 2 members of this uq holder. I thought Akamatsu sensei forgot this character / axe both of them. Well can’t wait to see how this manga goes to.. But Akamatsu has done a great job to combine negima and uq holder at this point.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I almost forgot about the other 2 members of this uq holder.

Haha! I understand that. I was starting to think he’d just drop them and have done.

  5. magine says:

And here the flashback ended, it was interesting to see how things happened, poor Chachazero, I hope that someday she will be repaired, Fate creating the clone soldiers, I didn’t like that he used them for that thing, after saying that Touta was a failed experiment now he wants him again (Is he still make those clone soldiers in that building? Or now he is more interested in Touta knowing that he is no longer a failure)

I think the clone that escaped was Touta (Maybe Evangeline helped them escape) the mother who died, she didn’t look like the ‘konoka’ that gave birth to Touta, maybe she’s still alive, if so, I would like her to meet with Touta.

(One of those clones was Cutlass, I wonder how Cutlass joined Ialda)

Is the next chapter about Kuroumaru? Wow, I hope there are several chapters, I wonder if the organization will go looking for Kuroumaru to eliminate him since Kuroumaru works for Evangeline now. Or Kuroumaru will have to decide if he wants to be a man or a woman because he will have reached the age.

    Also, I found this image:

    http://imgsrc.baidu.com/forum/pic/item/108015a98226cffcb874d857b5014a90f703ea3b.jpg

Is there a volume 39 of Negima? and I wonder what it means in the magazine where Evangeline and Touta are.

    • Dargor says:

I would die for that cover.

But seriously, god knows what it means with anything. Akamatsu has been throwing the franchise every which way I can’t tell which way is even up. The stupid, and therefore probably correct answer is he’s consolidating chapters from UQ Holder for some other volume for god knows why, but its consistent with the way the last two years have been around the world.

      • Dargor says:

Scratch that. After digging through Akamatsu’s twitter, its just a sleeve for UQ Holders newest volume. Just another reminder that UQ Holder is pretending to be something its not.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I think the clone that escaped was Touta

      Likewise.

      Maybe Evangeline helped them escape

Hmmmm…I have my doubts there. Eva seemed genuinely surprised to find Touta in chapter 1. Granted, Akamatsu-sensei could retcon anything.

Is the next chapter about Kuroumaru?

That’s what I’m told Akamatsu-sensei said on Twitter.

Is there a volume 39 of Negima?

No. I’m guessing this is just an extra.

  6. Missingmoney says:

As morally wrong as Fate is going about with the child clone immortal things, he’s not exactly wrong when he calls Eva out on her methods.

I can’t see why Eva would even suggest doing the same thing as Negi, when it’s already proven that Negi’s methods would fail. Negi had already surpassed Eva, and his methods failed to defeat MOTB, and even ended up becoming her vessel instead. Her methods is practically doomed to fail from the beginning.

That said, I’m more interested in what happened to the clones. Cutlass joined up with Negi, and the rest were said to have died young due to cloning issues. But with so many clones, and even ones that are still bred in the labs, surely there has to be somewhere they could go with it.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I can’t see why Eva would even suggest doing the same thing as Negi,

She felt compassion for the “clones.” (Man, I don’t like that term ’cause they aren’t actually clones. If they were pure clones, they’d look like Negi.) Fate sees them as merely tools that look human. Eva finally saw them as not artificially constructed things to be used, but as actual humans.

But with so many clones, and even ones that are still bred in the labs, surely there has to be somewhere they could go with it.

I think Isana and Honoka are pure clones of Setsuna and Konoka. So there is that. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cutlass comes back with a new body.

      • Kumiko Watanabe says:

Yay. The original UQ. Finally the complete intro to all the UQ family with cutlass included. I think Cutlass or another clone of her with her brain with a mech body will be back but will join UQ. Now I hope for a good story with all involved.

More bodies in the hot springs to explore If they are still alive. More mentors for Tota.

I hope Chachazero is to stay. She would be a good character that sees things from a more rational side or different side. I loved her quick observations of Tota that totally embarrassed Eva. Almost the irritating sister. Hmm Chachazero and Mizore as a team.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

The original UQ. Finally the complete intro to all the UQ family with cutlass included.

I think we are still missing one — the short guy with the “fur” trimmed coat.

I think Cutlass or another clone of her with her brain with a mech body will be back but will join UQ.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking as well, unless Akamatsu-sensei is ending the manga in the next few years, in which case he may not bother.

I hope Chachazero is to stay. She would be a good character that sees things from a more rational side or different side. I loved her quick observations of Tota that totally embarrassed Eva. Almost the irritating sister.

Haha. Yeah, Chachazero needs to come back for sure.

  7. I think there is nothing happen between negi and even(I mean the lovey dovey time) because even kept the “maid figure”……
And in the uq,negi loves asuna right?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

And in the uq,negi loves asuna right?

Well, he supposedly loved Chisame, though that didn’t make a ton of sense to me.

      • Robert says:

Asuna has turn out to be related to Negi. She is actually Negi’s Aunt. In the Negi-verse, Negi was in love with Chisame. We have only limited information about what happen during the second timeline of the Negima series.

When it comes to the Negi clones, Yukihime/Eva had to make sure that one was allow to live what seem to be a normal life. For the few next chapters, I want to have a flashback about Kuroumaru’s past and likely an attempt by his family to kill him.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

For fun, I started rereading UQ Holder at bedtime. There’s a possible continuity problem. When Eva meets Fate under the Senkyoukan, she says it has been 30 years since they last saw each other. That doesn’t seem to square with things as depicted in the recent flashback.

        • Rob C. says:

There at least two who have get out alive. Cutless and likely Chaos. Their both related Negai, Chaos referred to him as her descendant, beloved. While Cutless had to escape that nasty Child-solider plan Fate made to team up with her possed biological Grandfather.

      • Hakeem says:

I ship them so hard but even i still think they need more development.
