SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18The toilet is busted in Lupin’s room, and there’s no telling when the French plumber will be by to fix it. So it is time to put on their old man disguises to use the bathroom in Jigen’s room. After lunch, the toilet situation is still very much on Lupin’s mind. However, to everyone’s surprise, Fujiko emerges from a room. Jigen and Goemon are very unhappy with this. Fujiko claims a drunk Lupin let her into their hideout. The plumber calls, but when Fujiko realizes this, she hangs up the call.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18Lupin, Goemon, and Jigen realize that Fujiko is up to something. Goemon ends up going to ask her what she’s hidden in their bathroom as she’s taking a shower. He ends up “pinned” to the wall by a naked Fujiko. While Fujiko plays strip Old Maid with Lupin, Goemon decides to make soba with miso soup. Zenigata comes by, having smelled the miso. So Lupin dons his old man disguise and allows Zenigata in, causing the others to hide.

Fujiko needs to go, so Jigen dons his old man disguise to escort her after she begs them. Zenigata returns, to eat soba. Meanwhile, Fujiko sneaks back into the bathroom to retrieve something out of the high toilet tank. Zenigata leaves and Goemon wonders how Zenigata liked his soba. Lupin discovers a small, wet, wrapped present on the coffee table. He tosses it in the trash after sniffing it.

To Fujiko’s chagrin, not only does she discover Lupin is not alone, but he doesn’t even know the special occasion that caused her to visit. She is going to toss the gift into the dumpster, but changes her mind and tosses it into the elevated toilet tank. Back in the present, Fujiko smiles and calls Lupin and idiot before leaving.

Thoughts/Review:

Well, I finally sat down to watch Lupin the Third Part 5 – 18. Looks like we get an episode that takes place after Part 4, but before Part 5 starts.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

Toilet Humor

In all of the years I’ve watched anime, I think this is only the second anime episode I’ve seen where needing to use the toilet has been a central focus of one of the storylines. (The first time was the side-hurtingly funny episode from Those Who Hunt Elves 2. But I digress…) As such, Lupin the Third Part 5 – 18 turns out to be pretty amusing since needing to take a wiz or a dump is a universal thing. And not having a functional toilet is something I’m sure we’ve all experienced at some time or other.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

While I never laughed out loud, I think there were two funny moments. The first was when Lupin revealed he used the last of Goemon’s chopsticks in order to try to clear whatever blockage there was in the toilet. The second was seeing Fujiko use a toothbrush to fish out the blockage in the toilet.

A Blushing Fujiko-chan is Cute

Normally, Fujiko doesn’t do a thing for me. However, in Lupin the Third Part 5 – 18, her having her hair up in a ponytail and wearing a man’s button-down shirt made her look pretty good. ?  I didn’t need to see the nude shots of her though, even if one couldn’t see the naughty bits very much.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

However, when it came to making her look really cute, it was when she was blushing in front of the guys. I’m not sure I ever remember her doing that. Nevertheless, I liked it. ?

What Was the Present For?

So, Fujiko came by Lupin’s new French hideout one night. She was dressed up rather nicely. And she had a present for Lupin. Obviously, whatever day this was, it had special meaning to Fujiko. And since Lupin couldn’t remember, sober or drunk, it obviously didn’t mean much to him.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

As such, I understand Fujiko getting irritated at Lupin. But what I don’t get is why she changed her mind about tossing her little present into the trash. Why toss it into the toilet’s tank? That makes no sense unless she were just hiding it in the tank. I suppose that’s possible since Lupin was wasted, so maybe Fujiko decided that she’d give him another chance. But as hiding places go, that doesn’t make much sense either.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

And it also makes no sense that this would caused a toilet not to work. It was implied that the present was lodged in the tank drain and that there was a normal stopper in there rather than a flapper. None of that makes sense.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

All that aside, I’ve no clue what the present was for. Sadly, I doubt we’ll ever know.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Time to wrap up my review of Lupin the Third Part 5 – 18.

  • Not sure what value a
  • I have to say, it was kinda nice in the “modern” context of the Lupin III franchise to see the gang all together.
  • On a similar note, Zenigata has had little to do in the current series. His appearance in Lupin the Third Part 5 – 18 is merely tossing the character a bone to give him some lines. Otherwise, his presence in the episode has no meaning.

Lupin the Third Part 5 - 18

In the end, Lupin the Third Part 5 – 18 is an amusing episode dealing with some toilet humor and a very cute Fujiko-chan.

The premise for this episode was pretty flimsy but I enjoyed it. I also wish they revealed what was inside that package.

Now, regarding Zenigata, I enjoyed his appearance. I thought his presence was particularly exciting because everyone is caught off guard when he arrives. I also thought his compliment to Lupin, and Lupin’s reaction to it, was touching. Generally speaking, I have mostly approved of Zenigata’s sporadic appearances. The only time I missed him was during that episode with Albert.

In this episode, I kept thinking that Zenigata had to know this was Lupin and he was just toying with Lupin. But it didn’t go that way.
