Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

A young girl in a tattered kimono wanders a burned and devastated Japanese town. A young woman assures the little girl that she’ll be fine. She then offers the little girl some ohagi. In the present, Tokiko is shown to be remembering these moments.

Meanwhile, Nasa finishes preparing a summer food dish for himself and Tsukasa. Tokiko is suddenly at the table, eating cold noodles with them. Tsukasa is annoyed by this sudden intrusion. Tokiko suggests the two of them take her camping. While Tsukasa is irritated by this, Nasa is intrigued by the notion after hearing Tokiko’s flowery description of camping.

Tsukasa is stunned by Nasa wanting to go camping. Tokiko reminds Tsukasa that as an old lady, she doesn’t have long to live. As such, Tsukasa reluctantly consents. Tokiko gives a bag to Tsukasa as a present and leaves. Nasa inquires about the gift. Tsukasa says she knows what it is–ohagi, something Tsukasa was pretty happy about when Tokiko gave it to her before.

Thoughts/Review:

And so we get a ten-page outing with Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 92. Not only that, Hata-sensei drops an interesting flashback on us.

The Flashback

On the surface, it would appear that the flashback in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 92 is pretty straight forward. The young woman in the disaster area would appear to be Tokiko. The young girl would appear to be Tsukasa. This would seem to be confirmed by the fact that Tsukasa acknowledges Tokiko having given her ohagi before. And the woman in the flashback did give ohagi to the little girl.

However, I suggest it may not be as simple as that.

1. If the little girl in the flashback is Tsukasa, she’s injured. Tsukasa cannot be injured by her own admission. Even in chapter one, it was Nasa who took the damage. Yes, Tsukasa briefly had some blood, but she was not injured nor phased by the accident. So that would suggest the little girl could not be Tsukasa.
2. The flashback is from the POV of the little girl. That being the case, why would Tokiko remember this moment of devastation from that point of view?
3. Hata-sensei has shown us lots of splash pages depicting Tsukasa in different times and places in history, looking same age she is now.
4. Assuming those splash pages are not canon, Tsukasa has heavily implied that she has been around for centuries. Further, she can handle a heavy, real, samurai sword like a master. This implies that Tsukasa had the same height, weight, and body structure in the past as she does now.
5. The manner the woman in the flashback rescued the little girl is almost identical to how Tsukasa rescued Nasa and later, Chitose.

My Theory

When it comes to theories, sometimes I’m spot on. Sometimes, I’m no where in the park (as happened with Negima!). That said, I do have a theory about the flashback in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 92.

For a start, I suspect that the event depicted would be the 1948 Fukui earthquake. The devastation reminds me more of earthquake damage rather than war damage. Further, it took five days to put out the fires from this quake, significantly longer than the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake. And finally, assuming the little girl is Tokiko, the 1948 Fukui earthquake would make Tokiko around 80 today. (I use today as a reference since Tokikaku Cawaii has the latest iPhones in usage.)  That feels more accurate than her being over 100.

Since I am assuming that Tokiko is the little girl in the flashback, there’s the issue of hair styles. On the surface, the fact that the young woman and the elderly Tokiko have the same hair styles, they MUST be the same person. I’ve already pointed out how this thought clashes with what the story has shown to date. Thus, I suspect that Tokiko simply adopted the hairstyle of the woman who rescued her.

The biggest point indicating that the young woman in the flashback is Tokiko is the ohagi. Tsukasa clearly remembers Tokiko giving her some. However, as I established earlier, Tokiko being the young woman causes problems not easily resolved. That said, I suspect that Tokiko at some later point made some for Tsukasa as a thank you. And that she continues to do so.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 92 ended up being a very interesting chapter, thanks to a couple of pages of flashbacks. We’ll see if I’m right on my theories or not. But in the meantime, I guess we are up for some camping fun with Tokiko, Nasa, and Tsukasa.
