Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

In the past, a young Chitose secretly follows her great-grandmother to the summit of a mountain owned by their family. At the summit of said mountain, the elderly Tokiko is visiting Tsukasa and her messy room filled with manga. Tsukasa reflects on her life and acknowledges that she would have liked to have gotten married. She recalls Umayado telling her that one day, she’d meet her destined person.

Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 156

Tsukasa surprises Tokiko by asking her about her marriage. Tokiko somewhat laments only having ten years with her husband. However, she’s glad she married him. This question makes Tokiko think that Tsukasa found someone. Tsukasa denies it, so Tokiko encourages her to marry at least once.

Tsukasa detects Chitose snooping about. Realizing she’s been discovered, Chitose runs off, shocked to discover someone actually lived in the house at the summit of the mountain. However she falls off a ledge and nearly to her death. Tsukasa arrives to save her, but falls into the ravine instead. Chitose races back to inform her grandmother, but to her horror, Tokiko doesn’t seem concerned. Tsukasa shows us, stunning and scaring Chitose.

Thoughts/Review:

Hata-sensei continues to please me with more of Tsukasa’s backstory. This time, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 156 is about Chitose’s encounter with Tsukasa. But at the same time, served to show how Tsukasa came to where she is now.

Chitose’s Arrival

The first thing we get some solid confirmation of is Chitose’s relationship with Tokiko. In chapter 12 of the series, Chitose shows up and we learn that she discovered Tsukasa’s whereabouts from her great grandmother, Tokiko. Oddly enough, 大おばあ様 (Oo-obaasama) is what Chitose uses to address Tokiko back then, not 曾おばあ様 (Hii-obaasama). But we didn’t know if this truly meant Chitose was related to Tokiko or not.

However, in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 156, we see that the young Chitose had been with her wealthy grandmother for probably all her life. I’m guessing Chitose was either a member of Tokiko’s household, or she spent a lot of time there. Thus the summer visits to the home at the foot of the mountain where Tsukasa resided at the summit.

We also got to see why Chitose fell off that cliff and how Tsukasa knew to save her. It wasn’t as I had thought it would play out, but that’s just fine. I much prefer the story Hata-sensei has lain out before us. Further, it explains why Chitose is so obsessed about Tsukasa. She learned Tsukasa’s secret and clearly overcame whatever initial shock we see in the chapter.

Hopefully, we get more of Chitose’s childhood explored (not that she’s an adult now), as well as more of Chitose’s immediate family history.

Marriage

Another great element of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 156 is learning that Tokiko indeed got married. In ten years, it is highly likely she had kids, thus explaining how Chitose came to be. I really hope Hata-sensei will bring back some stuff with Tokiko’s marriage.

I was also excited to see Umayado cameo in a single-frame flashback. As many of you know, I have a theory that Nasa maybe be the reincarnation of Umayado. Whether I’m right or wrong, it is clear that Tsukasa’s notion of a destined person came from Umayado. Thus, we get a little more understanding as to why Tsukasa agreed to marry Nasa.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 156 was a good chapter. I really am enjoying learning more about Tsukasa’s past. And I am glad we got to see how Tsukasa met Chitose.
