Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Tsukasa returns home with a watermelon she purchased. After changing clothes, she and Nasa eat the watermelon on the engawa. Tsukasa tells Nasa that when Tokiko was a kid, she used to feed Tokiko a lot of watermelons that Tsukasa grew. Tsukasa stops eating, telling Tsukasa that she remembers these past events very clearly.

Chitose shows up, vowing to take up Tokiko’s work to make Tsukasa’s dream come true. This hits Tsukasa very hard. She wonders if Tokiko was happy in her life. It was the question Tsukasa had always been afraid to ask. Tokiko made Tsukasa happy by being there for her. So Tsukasa hopes that one day, she’s learn for sure that Tokiko had a happy life.

Thoughts/Review:

Good grief, Hata-sensei! Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 158.2 made me get a fresh box of tissues for some reason.

Dealing With Loss

It doesn’t surprise me that Tsukasa ultimately broke down to grieve over the loss of Tokiko in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 158.2. And yet, I get the feeling that the weight of Tokiko’s passing was something Tsukasa may not have experienced before.

As Tsukasa stated in the chapter, she’s seen a ton of deaths. Heck, she’s caused quite a few. And I think of the untold story about her and Umayado (Prince Shōtoku). I have to believe his death would have had some impact on Tsukasa. But from small slice we’ve seen of Tsukasa’s life as an immortal, Tokiko appears to be a rare exception where Tsukasa adopted someone and raised them as their own child.

If that’s the case, then yeah, Tokiko’s passing is like Tsukasa’s own daughter passing away (if Tsukasa’s had a biological daughter). However, all of the centuries Tsukasa lived were not enough to steel her against Tokiko’s death.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Allow me to wrap up my review of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 158.2 with some final thoughts.

• I know that Chitose has mostly been used in a comedic role. She has a pseudo sister complex with Tsukasa. However, while I don’t want her to not be comedic, I hope Hata-sensei does have Chitose follow Tokiko’s footsteps.
• Hopefully, we’ll see Tsukasa growing some watermelons in future. I think that would be a nice touch.

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 158.2 was a lovely chapter that caused me to tear up a bit.
