TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You 12
Tonikaku Cawaii: Fly Me to the Moon 12
Tonikaku Kawaii/トニカクカワイイ
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Nasa takes an IT support job. While he completes it successfully, the resulting long hours working from home weaken him and he gets sick. Tsukasa forces him to bed, then does the cute, newlywed wife routine to nurse him to health. However, he sleeps all day. That night, she wipes him down, but he won’t let her remove his pants as it is embarrassing.
That night in their futons, Tsukasa snuggles with Nasa and reveals that she had been worried about him despite claiming the opposite. Nasa proposes they go to the summer festival together. She agrees. The next day at the bathhouse, Chitose insists Tsukasa and Nasa wear Yukatas. She even produces some for them. The couple wear them and head out to the festival.
At the festival, Tsukasa wants proper takoyaki, so Nasa buys some for them to share. They then head to the goldfish booth, run by Aya and Chitose. Nasa fails to score a fish. Tsukasa and Nasa head the nearby shrine to pray and chat. Aya, Chitose, Kaname, Aurora, and Charlotte get the couple to come with them to observe the fireworks before heading home.
Thoughts/Review:
If you don’t know any better, TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You 12 is probably a fine episode. For me, while the episode is watchable, the manga is going to be far an away the better choice.
Modifications to the Source Material
For TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You 12, the anime production team decided to skip over forty chapters of manga content to go to chapter 88 and the first part of chapter 89 before jumping back to chapter 80.
- The entire element of Nasa taking an IT support job is anime original. He’s just working in general in the manga.
- Tsukasa didn’t immediately get into her pajamas after wiping Nasa down in the manga.
- While in their futons, the link to the chapter 80 material obviously wasn’t in the manga. Likewise, Kaname’s chat with Tsukasa about wearing a yukata wasn’t in the manga. In chapter 79, Tsukasa was already going to wear a yukata.
- Nasa does not bring a camera with him in the source manga.
- Hayate and Nagi from Hayate the Combat Butler have a cameo in the anime that is not present in the manga.
- Aya and Chitose were not running the goldfish booth at the festival in the manga. Ditto Aurora and Charlotte, who look very different in their yukatas.
- We didn’t get to see Nasa fail at goldfish scooping in the manga. And the manga showed Tsukasa with a bag full of tiny goldfish to go with her smug teasing.
- There was no shrine visit in the manga. Tsukasa’s speech came from the unused part of chapter 89, when Nasa had insomnia.
I’m rather annoyed at Tsukasa wasn’t shown with her bag of fish and her smug look. It adds to her teasing of Nasa when he so utterly failed.
In Sickness and in Health
The anime writers of TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You 12 decided to make the theme “in sickness and in health” as far as I can see. I suppose that’s a fine way to end an anime adaptation, especially if you aren’t sure you are going to do more. This kind of story is fairly cliched for anime and manga romantic comedy titles.
I’m always amused at how one incident of working late is enough to get one sick. That’s not what gets one sick. I work some insane hours and have some funky sleeping schedules. I may suffer from exhaustion, but that’s not the same as getting a summer cold (corona virus) or the like. But as I said, it is a cliched thing for anime and manga.
About the only thing that made this aspect of the story unique is that Nasa and Tsukasa are married. And thus they kiss and make out a bit, though not as much as in the manga.
Summer Festival
The traditional summer festival outing came about in TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You 12. As such, it is time to break out the yukata, eat some takoyaki, and scoop some goldfish. Finally, the evening is spent with look at the fireworks.
Here too, the anime writers added something unique in that they had Tsukasa and Nasa visit the shrine the festival was being held at. Normally, that doesn’t happen.
Finally, it was weird seeing Aurora and especially Charlotte out of their maid uniforms. Charlotte is basically unrecognizable due to her hairstyle change.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
I’ll review the series and the OVA in the very near future. In the meantime, ONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You 12 was okay for me, but I’m biased due to the manga. But if you haven’t read the manga, the episode was probably pretty good and a nice end to the series.
