Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 204
Tonikaku Kawaii Fly Me to the Moon 204
トニカクカワイイ 204
Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:
In Kyoto, Tsukasa recounts Kaguya’s story (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) to a man named Michizane. He is writing things down, but has many questions about the historical accuracy of Tsukasa’s tale. Further, he has a problem with not knowing what items Kaguya tasked her suitors with. Tsukasa counters that since these events happened hundreds of years earlier, no one will know the difference.
Back during that time, the emperor has troops at the bamboo cutter’s mansion to defend Kaguya. However, Kaguya dismisses the emperor’s efforts as a waste of time. She explains the attitude of her immortal race when it comes to mortals. The emperor is angry and confronts Kaguya to truly express what she wants. She concedes that she doesn’t want to leave as returning to the moon will cause her to lose everything. The emperor embraces her as she cries.
Meanwhile, the soldiers outside, including two of the three surviving suitors, start collapsing.
Thoughts/Review:
We get a very interesting twist to The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 204.
Tsukasa Prompted the Author
The biggest twist in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 204 is that Tsukasa is the one who prompted an author to write The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, based on her recounting the story. I liked this element as it made sense for her to tell the tale, as she lived through the event. However, as she points out, she was dying when the lunar envoy came to Earth, so she never knew who are what they were.
Another interesting thing here is that the writer, Michizane, addresses Tsukasa as “Nee-sama”. Further, Tsukasa mentions that she taught him everything he knows. As such, I think we can reasonably presume that Michizane is another kid whom Tsukasa rescued and raised. To me, this is an interesting element of Tsukasa’s past and I hope we learn more.
That aside, I think Hata-sensei has another reason for introducing Tsukasa as the person from whom The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter originated. Tsukasa didn’t know all of the details from the actual events, and so had Michizane make stuff up. Further, Tsukasa is the only person alive from that time (except maybe Kaguya), so who would question the accuracy? As such, Hata-sensei can use this as a means of showing how his version of the tale is the complete and accurate one.
Kaguya’s Feelings
Once again, we see another side of Kaguya in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 204. This time, we see Kaguya crying and vulnerable as she has fallen in love with the emperor. Further, she doesn’t want to leave Earth, but she must. I thought it was cool that the emperor got Kaguya to reveal her true feelings rather than hiding them.
Previously, Tonikaku Kawaii (using the “correct” spelling–haha!) has indicated that Kaguya had a wish just as Tsukasa had a wish. I think it is safe to say that Kaguya’s wish was to stay behind and be with her beloved emperor. Kaguya is still around, but the emperor is long dead. So maybe her current wish is to be reunited with him somehow. We’ll see what Hata-sensei does there.
Final Thoughts and Concusion
In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 204 was an interesting and enjoyable chapter, continuing the exploration of Tsukasa and Kaguya’s past.
