Spy×Family 33 (Battle Royale! #SPY_FAMILY)

Spy×Family 33

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis

Yor leads Olka’s party through the ship. However, she finds suspicious men at the various routes to the escape boat. As such, she takes them to the upper deck, using the ongoing firework show as cover. However, a large group of assassins are waiting for them. Yor dodges a sniper shot. The director removes the sniper, then using the sniper rifle to provide cover for Yor. To that end, Yor gets Olka’s party through the hatch. Jeb uses his body to protect Olka and her child.

After securing the hatch, Yor and the director start slaughtering the would be assassins. The director remarks on the mess they have to clean up. The lead assassin approaches with the survivors. Yor wants them to leave, but they refuse. A swordsman appears, seriously injuring the director. Yor realizes this man is superior to the others. As she fights, she questions her motivation for being an assassin.

The swordsman defeats Yor. The way cleared, the lead assassin goes to take care of Olka’s party. However, Yor throws a stiletto weapon at him to stop him. She thinks of her new, adoptive family and breaks the man’s sword. Now back on her feet, Yor is ready to face the swordsman.

Back home, Yuri gets sick. He’s taken home by his SSS superior. While there, Yuri recalls the sacrifices Yor made for them as children. His superior brings back an herbal tea similar to what Yor used to make. Drinking (and barfing) it, Yuri declares himself better, but his superior orders him to rest.

Thoughts/Review

Another enjoyable episode to be had in Spy×Family 33.

Modifications to the Source Material

Manga chapters 51, 53, 53, and Short Mission 8 were adapted to create Spy×Family 33. Like normal, the adaptation is very faithful to the source material. I love that!

Spy×Family 33

My only quibble with the adaptation is that some scenes aren’t as clear as the manga. The anime has an accurate portrayal of the night atmosphere. I do appreciate that a lot. However, the scene where Yor kicks a heavy container is shown differently in the anime vs. the manga. In the manga, the “camera” shows us clearly that the container is over the hatch, while in the anime, that is not clear. We just get Yor remarking on the hatch’s inaccessibility (which is in the manga), but without seeing the hatch blocked, things are lost.

Spy×Family 33

Still, this is just a minor quibble that I wish the anime folks had done better.

Yor’s Dilemma

I really appreciate the character arc given to Yor in Spy×Family 33. Throughout this whole cruise arc, Yor has questioned why she still works for Garden. And in the end, her new, adopted family gave her the motivation to carry on. I love that. So even though Yor is a massive girl boss, the fact that she comes off as a real person means her character is lovable and likable. Compare that to the rubbish Hollywood puts out, where the girl boss character is an insufferable bint.

Spy×Family 33

I suspect that Yor’s inhuman abilities will get some sort of explanation in the series before it ends. Considering how Anya’s abilities are the result of human experimentation, it wouldn’t surprise me if Yor and her boss had some sort of physical augmentation done to them.

Spy×Family 33

Regardless, I love seeing Yor in action. And I enjoyed seeing her get challenged in this episode.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review with some final thoughts.

  • Anya and Loid are reduced to cameos in the episode. Still, I loved seeing Anya enjoy the fireworks the way any kid would.
  • Yuri’s story does break the action, but that’s why the anime production team did the end credits where they did. That allowed them to effectively add this Yuri side story in. Although I didn’t mention this earlier, in the source manga, this omake story does take place during the cruise arc. I love that the anime production team can take advantage of stuff like that.

Spy×Family 33

In the end, Spy×Family 33 is another really enjoyable episode from my favorite, modern franchise.
