Urusei Yatsura 27 (2022) review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Kurama is frustrated that her Karasutengu haven’t found her a husband. They consult the computer, who suggests Rei. As such, Kurama abducts him and Ran, who’d been feeding him. Kurama disposes of Ran, who falls on a flying Lum. Ran explains things and forces Lum to help her. Meanwhile, Kurama has the Karasutengu cooking nonstop for Rei. They send out for more rice.

Ataru discovers what’s going on and gets brought up to Kurama’s ship. Kurama sends Ataru, Lum, and Ran to the dungeon. She then takes Rei to her bedroom, where she finds the trio there, thanks to the trap door. Rei’s excitement at seeing Lum causes him to briefly revert to his pig-0x form. When Lum realizes the Karasutengu are hiding this from Kurama, she works to reveal this. When Kurama eventually discovers it, she decides to go to bed and hide.

At the Mendou estate, Shuutarou’s father tells him he’s to be engaged to Tobimaru’s sister. Ryoko does not like this and beats Shuutarou as a result. Shuutarou confronts Tobimaru about this. Tobimaru denies he has a sister. Ataru decides to get involved, and the trio discover female bodyguards are the ones who are destroying Shuutarou’s spies.

A giant suit of medieval armor shows up, demanding an explanation. Since the bodyguards address the armor as “Ojousama”, the guys figure this is Tobimaru’s sister. Shuutarou is horrified at having to marry armor. However, Ataru wants to know what’s inside. To that end, when the armor is running track, Ataru catches a glimpse of the girl. He races after her, only to be knocked across the state, back to the quarreling Shuutarou and Tobimaru.

Thoughts/Review:

Man, these CRINGE HiDive subtitles really make the show hard to watch, more so when the High Seas fansubs are so much better. That aside, the 2022 Urusei Yatsura 27 originally came from manga chapters 207, 208, and 224. Subsequently, the OG anime adaptations were done in episode 121 and episode 132. I have to say, the slapstick humor for the first half of episode 27 didn’t make me laugh the way it did in the OG episode. But the second half did make me laugh a lot, even though I knew what was coming.

Man Hunt

The first story of Urusei Yatsura 27 saw a rather crowded field of characters. We get Kurama and her flock of Karasutengu. Then there’s Rei and Ran, on their pseudo date. Rounding out things are Lum and Ataru. As I mentioned, the slapstick humor of this episode didn’t make me laugh the way it did in the OG episode. Beatdown, slapstick humor is best when it is unexpected. And I expected Ataru to take a beating on top of remembering the OG story.

As to Kurama and her hunt for a man, yeah, her infatuation with Rei amused me. In fact, no part of this half of the episode wasn’t entertaining, other than the trash subtitles. But this part of the episode is soon forgotten. Sure, one may remember it later, but there’s nothing special here, and that’s a shame.

Armored Girl

While the first have of Urusei Yatsura 27 may have just amused me, the second half did have me laugh out loud. I’m not sure if it was because I knew the jokes or not. But the moment I saw Asuka (only identified as “Ojousama” and as Tobimaru’s sister in the episode) in her armor, I laughed. Shuutarou imagining getting married to a giant suit of armor made me laugh.

There were other laughs, but the biggest laugh for me came from Ataru racing after Asuka, who was running track in full armor. In fact, I got so hooked into the 2nd half of the episode, the “to be continued” message took me by surprise. I guess the fact that Asuka is such a unique, over the top character, the story around her continues to make me laugh even when I knew everything that was coming.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Urusei Yatsura 27 has continued, trash subtitles. That aside, the first story amused, and will be funnier if you love slapstick. The second story made me laugh. Can’t wait to watch and relive the rest of Asuka’s story.
