Urusei Yatsura 37 (2022) review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Asuka attempts to bathe with her brother, Tobimaru. In the process, she cracks some of his ribs when she hugs him. When he’s attempting to recover, she comes to his room. Eventually, their mother realizes the problem and decides to send Asuka on an errand to deliver a scroll to Shuutarou at his high school. While there, Asuka’s fear of men causes her to create a ton of chaos. Further, she offends Ryuunosuke by thinking she’s a man. As such, Ryuunosuke starts chasing Asuka to try to set the record straight.

Eventually, Asuka manages to throw the scroll to Shuutarou and flee. Her mom and brother encourage her to face her fears. So Asuka decides to briefly go for Ryuunosuke, since she sensed something different about her. Since Asuka still goes to Tobimaru’s bed to sleep, her mother arranges for Asuka to go on a date with Shuutarou at the Mendou estate. Ryoko is not happy about this, so she gets Ataru involved. Lum disguises herself as part of Asuka’s bodyguards to thwart Ataru. Meanwhile, Shuutarou fears for his life due to Asuka’s strength.

Thoughts/Review:

When I checked in to see what I needed to watch, it shocked me to see how far behind I am watching Urusei Yatsura. As such, I forced myself to watch Urusei Yatsura 37. Taken from source manga chapters 237, 238 (OG anime episode 150), and chapter 252 (OG anime episode 153), this episode just didn’t do much for me.

Asuka Returns

When Asuka made her debut in episode 27 of the 2022 series, it was quite funny. However, for Urusei Yatsura 37, I found I just didn’t find it that funny. And yet in the OG adaptation, I did find the antics funny, especially with things like Asuka running on the walls. Granted, none of the wall walking probably happened in the manga. But the chase elements were there, and the normal, Asuka antics were there. So it should have been funny to me, but I didn’t laugh.

For some reason, I just found most of the episode boring, even though there’s a lot going on. I’m tired of the joke over Ryuunosuke dressing as a man, but getting offended ’cause people don’t realize she’s a woman. The jokes of Ataru trying to go for every women other than the hot babe he has wearies me. I’m just tired of the whole thing, so even Asuka’s return, which should have been humorous, just seemed tedious to me. And her brother complex didn’t help matters.

And maybe this tiresome element of the series is why I just stopped watching and didn’t even miss it. Kinda sad, really.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Urusei Yatsura 37 has all of the Askua comedy elements, but none of it landed for me.
