Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 06
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Mercphobia starts sending water spouts down to the city, causing explosions everywhere. Team Natsu are unable to do anything against the water dragon god. A whirlpool in the sky sucks in Natsu. However, a dragon claw returns him. Natsu recognizes the scent of this giant, fire dragon. The dragon tells Natsu that fire vs. water makes it difficult. He reveals himself as Ignia, the fire dragon god and the actual son of Igneel.
Ignia explains that he and others like him were raised by their mothers, and their fathers weren’t around. They fled Acnologia and grew in power to exceed him. However, when Ignia learned Natsu and company defeated Acnologia, Ignia decided he wanted to battle Natsu one on one. Unfortunately, Natsu isn’t strong enough. To that end, Ignia burns the city, forcing Mercphobia to put out some of the fire to protect himself.
Ignia tells Natsu to eat his fire in order to temporarily gain enough strength to defeat Mercphobia. He then promises to return to battle Natsu someday, and leaves. Natsu doesn’t want to eat the fire on principle, but the team convinces him. He gets the advantage of Mercphobia, but can’t take him down. After requesting the team’s support, Natsu finally defeats Mercphobia.
Before they can celebrate, it becomes clear that Natsu is losing himself. He wants to burn everything down to ash. Lucy grabs him from behind and hugs him. This causes him to calm down enough to regain his senses.
Thoughts/Review:
Good grief. The start of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 06 had me thinking someone screwed up and put an old Fairy Tail episode up instead. But the start of the episode was just stupid filler. And then there’s recap to boot. 😅
Son of a Retcon
One type of retcon writers like to employ is the, “Well, even though nothing was ever said about this, there’s nothing to say this didn’t happen.” Such is the case in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 06, where Ignia comes to play. So through all of Fairy Tail, Igneel never mentioned children (that I recall). However, Mashima-sensei (or whomever) thought, “You know, wouldn’t it be cool if Natsu had an enemy like Igneel. And since we never said Igneel didn’t have kids, we’ll say he has one. Yay!”
The other problem Ignia brings up is the power creep element. Throughout Fairy Tail, the dragon Acnologia was the “final boss” for the team to defeat. And indeed, this episode states that the so called dragon gods fled before the might of Acnologia. However, they are all apparently more powerful than Acnologia ever was, thanks to power creep.
That aside, Ignia provides a deus ex machina method for Natsu to defeat the water dragon god. I do remember from Fairy Tail that Natsu would eat fire to gain additional power. Considering how evil Ignia seems to be, it didn’t surprise me that Natsu was apparently negatively affected by the fire. Regardless, Ignia was here today, and will return down the road to fight Natsu once Natsu engages in power creep.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
Let me wrap up my review with some final thoughts.
- Shockingly, Touka and Fairy Tail didn’t show up in this episode.
- I was correct in my prediction that Team Natsu would not be able to defeat Mercphobia. I was wrong on how the resolution would go as I thought Diabolos would return, or Touka would do something from a distance. Instead, we got the retcon character.
- I don’t know where the intro to the episode came from. Maybe an omake thing from the manga? Regardless, it was really out of place, considering it had nothing to do with the story. And it wasn’t even set on the same continent.
In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 06 allows the water god dragon to be defeated via a deus ex machina, thanks to a retcon character.
