SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Misaki continues to attack Erza and destroy her armor. However, Erza continues to surprise Misaki by constantly summoning new armor. As such, Misaki decides to get serious and have the Blue Dimension attack Erza. Eventually, Erza is bound with chains. However, she summons a shield to prevent Misaki’s next attack.

Erza summons a sword and cuts herself free. She enchants her blade and with new armor, Erza attacks. This surprises Misaki, who then notices her Blue Dimension is turning red, matching Erza’s scarlet hair. In rage, Erza attacks Misaki, apparently defeating her.

Thoughts/Review:

I called it for Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 105. Sure, it wasn’t that hard to call that Misaki would say, “Well, I guess I’ll have to get serious.” I know Mashima-sensei, and he’s done this before. The OP villains have to underestimate the hero (or in this case, heroine) and thus not try hard. Its kinda boring to me, but whatever.

Likewise, as I previously mentioned, Erza’s fight is a “been there, done that” moment with her getting her armor shattered, only to requip it and better weapons to boot. Not sure when Erza picked up enchantment magic though.

Assuming Misaki is defeated, why isn’t she dead. I was actually thinking about that in chapter 103, when Lucy defeats Kiria. Lucy does a massive ultimate, and the result is a smoldering but very much alive Kiria. Likewise, when Erza does her Fairy Sword: Shooting Star ultimate, Misaki is a smoldering mass, but very much alive.

Yeah, I know–this is a shounen title, and as such, we can’t have characters die that easily. Plus, if Mashima-sensei follows his normal patterns, then at some point, Diabolos and Fairy Tail will be allies. That’s how it was in the OG Fairy Tail. The only difference here is that the conflict with Diabolos has gone on so long.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 105 is pretty much a standard, Erza, shounen fare fight. Harmless, but dull on page. It might look niftier in anime form.

It’s actually kinda funny how the fights are always “Okay, time to actually try” despite the fact they often don’t last for very long. Erza having essentially infinite ammo (or armour) has always cheapened her as a character. I remember reading how she won a fight in the previous series and the only explanation the characters could give was “Because she’s Erza” and man that was so hilarious and pathetic at the same time.

If you took the shonen combat out of the series I wonder how much more I’d actually like the characters? Because the amount of asspulls and screaming about the power of friendship would wear down even the staunchest of supporters. I think the characters themselves would probably benefit more from a low key series rather than fights to the “death”. It’s impossible for me to view any of these characters as “badass” (like your standard shonen champion) because of how formulaic the fights are.

But what can I say? As far as I know this series still does gangbusters. So if it ain’t broke….
