SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Kirin uses his coffin on a chain to give Laxus a beating.

Elsewhere, Lily transforms to his adult form, but gets stopped by Haku. Wendy continues to battle Haku. Unfortunately, he sends a swarm of plushies at her to attack, tickling her and holding her down so she can’t do anything. Wendy’s apparent loss pleases Haku since she has to be his girlfriend.

Irene takes control of a devil plushie and beats the other plushies off Wendy. Irene then possesses all of the plushies to attack Haku. This gives Wendy the opening to use a finishing move on Haku, defeating him. Irene informs Wendy that it was Wendy’s magic was the catalyst, not Irene’s. Thus Wendy is now a High Enchanter.

Thoughts/Review:

Not much to talk about in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 98. The Laxus fight is more about, “Hey, don’t forget our fight.” But I suppose it does set the stage for when the manga resumes focus on their fight.

As to Wendy’s fight with Haku, I suppose that even though Irene possessed all of the plushies, it was Wendy’s enchantment magic that gave the plushies power. This this allowed Irene to do her thing. And now Wendy is a High Enchanter, whatever that means.

Wendy has always been the youngest member of Team Natsu. Further, she’s primarily a support mage vs. a combat mage, even though she does have offensive capabilities. However, I can’t imagine Wendy’s position or roll in the group changing. Thus her new title doesn’t mean much to me. We’ll see how the story treats her.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, there’s not much to Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 98. But it does give resident loli a power up.

I’m trying not to comment on this series anymore but I’ve always felt that Wendy was just there to inject a little more kid friendly stuff into the series. It always felt out of place that she was there while everyone else was a teenager or older. As you know I stopped reading FT after Edolas so maybe she gets better but I never felt like she was a character that was a necessary addition to the series. The main quad of Natsu, Lucy, Ezra, and Grey always seemed like a good combination and Wendy just feels forced at times.

But as always that’s just me, I don’t deny any personal bias against this character. Hopefully she actually gets something going.

I don’t think you are wrong. I had a less generous thought as to why Mashima-sensei added Wendy to the crew. 😅

Yes, there’s definitely a less…. pure reason why she’s a main member of the cast too. It especially stands out given that basically everyone else in the cast isn’t a loli.

It’s even stranger that her Edolas counterpart is actually “developed”. But purely from a personality standpoint she never stood out as a great character.
