Top 5 Anime I Want a Sequel To

Top 5 Anime I Want a Sequel To

Recently, it was announced that a fourth A Certain Scientific Railgun anime series is in production. So as I sat at my desk, I thought, “What other anime titles would I like to see a sequel to?” I’ve avoided titles like the Ranma 1/2 remake, or Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest as those titles I figure probably will get a sequel sooner rather than later.

5) Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar

As one might expect from a Kajishima-sensei anime, Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar is a lore-rich series filled with interesting characters, wacky humor, and ecchi (often comedic) content. While the series ends in a nice place, there’s still the unresolved matter of MASAKI Kenshi, younger half-brother of Tenchi,  returning to his family on Earth. Rumors were that there would be a sequel to this anime, but I’ve not heard anything of late.

4) Minami-ke

One day, I need to read the still ongoing Minami-ke manga. However, this slice of life comedy series that centers around the lives of Minami sisters Haruka (high school), Kana (junior high school), and Chiaki (elementary school) begs for a sequel. The last anime adaptation came out in 2013. Granted, depending on the company doing the adaptation determined if it was good or not. Nevertheless, I’m willing to take a risk.

Update: I’ve been told by an anonymous reader that back in July 2024, a fifth TV anime series was announced. I missed that, but that’s good news!

3) Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens

It is a shame that no one has adapted the remaining 50% of the Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens manga into anime form. The series features a teen boy named Jin, who accidentally brings to life a goddess named Nagi into human form. The cast are all fun, and the events they get into are quite hilarious at times. However, there is a serious story too, which is the other reason to see this adapted. Since the manga ended in September 2017, time’s a wasting to get it adapted!

2) The Slayers

I need to sit and rewatch The Slayers anime. The series stars Lina Inverse, a young but massively powerful sorceress, and Gourry, a very talented warrior. The franchise is still popular in Japan today, and new light novels are still produced. However, the anime adaptations to date have avoided going into the material where supporting characters Zelgadiss and Amelia leave the party in favor of two new characters. That’s what I want to see adapted.

1) Full Metal Panic

When I watched Full Metal Panic in 2003, I was hooked. On one hand, it had fun, high school hijinks comedy. On the other, it told the story of an alternate history Earth, where in the 1990s, there are mecha power suits called Arm Slaves and other advanced tech. When the last sequel came out in 2018, it left us hanging with an unresolved story. Unfortunately, Xebec got absorbed and though there are only three more light novel volumes to adapt, there’s been no word on a final sequel to finish out Sousuke and Kaname’s story.

Final Thoughts

Well, those are my top five anime titles I’d love to see adaptations for. I’m sure there are other great ones that I’ve not thought of. Feel free to let me know in the comments below what anime sequels you’d like to see.

You mentioned Ranma 1/2 in your opening and admittedly I’d like to see a sequel, although given its ending and characters it is difficult to envision what they would even do. The author sort of wrote herself into a corner with how little romantic chemistry the main duo had at times, even towards the end. I think if she toned down the worst traits of Akane and Ranma she could explore how they finally admitted their feelings to each other, but Ranma’s driving factor was exactly that the two couldn’t admit their feelings for each other….

I also never really found the “combat” element in Ranma all that compelling since most arcs go the same way: Ranma discovers new form of martial arts that usually involves Akane in some way, Ranma masters said martial art and beats the bad guy, he moves on.

But really I’d just like more of the characters since I enjoy the cast. I do wonder if years of experience would refine the author’s ability to give more characters depth.

Other than that I honestly can’t think of anything off the top of my head that doesn’t already have a sequel or finishes rather conclusively and any sequel would just involve children of the main cast.

They did do a Ranma 1/2 remake. I’m thinking this will eventually get a remake, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, that’s the problem with Takahashi-sensei’s writing. Everything is done in order to maintain the status quo in Ranma’s and Akane’s relationship.

Interesting. The only sequel I could see with a “next generation” element would be Yu Yu Hakusho. Possibly Vandread, though earlier.
