AstroNerdBoy Natsu no Arashi! – 13 (finale)
夏のあらし！ Episode 13
(Summer Storm)
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
It is a summer morning with Arashi waking Hajime up. He has his “homework” project where he made a Sakura Bakudan — taking a cherry and making it explosive to taste. Arashi decides it should be named “Cutie Cherry-chan.” At the Ark, Master again attempts to get someone to go into the past with milk, only this time she wants to exchange it for good stuff. This leads to another lengthy discussion on what this would mean. Kaja decides to end this by throwing out the spoiled milk and buying new stuff.
When Takeshi comes by to order, Hajime gets jealous but is thwarted in planting the Cutie Cherry-chan with him. Since Kaja also purchased a giant pile of cherries, Master decides that a special service for the customers will be to serve them cherries. When Cutie Cherry-chan gets lost in the pile, Hajime convinces Arashi to go back into the past to retrieve it as an experiment on what Master proposed with the milk earlier. She agrees. Meanwhile, Jun and Kaja also go back to the past with a milk.
When Kaja is reminded of the Strawberry Cutie-chan incident, she’d suddenly determined to get Hajime back but to avoid a time paradox, she and Jun are forced to return to the present.
Hajime and Arashi arrive to exchange cherries and return to the present where Hajime “disarms” the Cutie Cherry-chan. Meanwhile, Master makes Kaja, Jun, Kanako, and Yayoi a fruit beverage with milk from the fridge, which upon drinking, all four scream.
Thoughts/Review:
As I sit here at my desk, I find myself stunned by what I have just watched. I am so stunned, I am finding it difficult to write anything. Remember how last episode I said that I was looking forward to the sequel of this series? Had the series been like this episode, that certainly would not have been the case.
As I’ve mentioned before, SHAFT can produce some of the funniest anime material out there but 
at the same time, they can produce some of the worst crap out there. This episode falls into the later category. Apparently, the production team thought, “You know what was the funniest part about our series after the endless ‘I read a book’ jokes? Why it was the parody references. Therefore, how about we ram as many parody references into this episode as we can. Then for the icing on the cake, we’ll have lots and lots of fanservice.”
Ugh.
Seeing everyone in swimsuits and various costumes that are changed frequently does not make for a good episode.
Man. I couldn’t wait for the episode to be over so that my spinning head would have a chance to settle down.
The only thing that interested me at all was Kaja remembering the Cutie Strawberry-chan incident and her desire to pay Hajime back for that. Unfortunately, it didn’t pay out.
I’ll write my final review later but I have to say this episode was extremely disappointing. Typical SHAFT in other words.

I saw this yesterday and I was thinking “did the animators how some kind of cosplay fetish” during the episode. I did find it amusing when the characters kept doing the poses they do in the opening for no freakin’ reason whatsoever. It is a weaker episode and not a good one to end the season on but it does take things full-circle in many ways. That’s why this series reminds me of Tenchi (the entire franchise, including the OAVs) where you had moments of compelling storytelling and genius characterization and then you had moments of just bi-polar fanservice drivel.
It’s a little unfair to slam an episode for many parody references just because you or I don’t get most of them. For the Japanese it could be very funny. And surely there’s nothing wrong with a little fanservice? :p
@O-chan — bi-polar is right.
@Kajafan — I’m not a fan of fanservice as such, but I will admit that if I knew all the parody stuff, it may have been more enjoyable to me. That said, even if the episode were nothing but American parody references, at some point I’d say, “enough.” That’s what happened with the first “Hayate no Gotoku” series — it became crammed full of parody references (even American ones) and eventually I grew weary of it at times.
