Sweetness and Lightning 05
Amaama to Inazuma episode 05
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Kotori and her twintail best friend catch a movie, then some food. On the way home, Kotori notices Tsumugi with a strange man. Fearing the worst, Kotori tails them to a convenience store, where the man buys snacks for himself and Tsumugi. He then takes the girl to a park to eat said snacks. When it appears that the man is offering Tsumugi cigarettes, Kotori reveals herself. Kouhei arrives, explaining that the man is his friend Yagi from high school. Kotori plays with Tsumugi while Kouhei and Yagi chat about Tsumugi and Kouhei learning to cook from Kotori.
Since Kotori saw Tsumugi’s reaction to doughnuts at the convenience store, she gets Kouhei to agree to make them on the weekend with her. When the weekend comes, Kouhei and Tsumugi come to Kotori’s mother’s restaurant Megumi. They follow the recipe left by Kotori’s mother. They also get Tsumugi to help with the dough. While they wait for the dough to rise, Kouhei cleans. The first batch of doughnuts turn out a failure as Kouhei burns them. However, he properly cooks the second batch. They then ice the doughnuts with chocolate or glaze them. Tsumugi finds she loves doughnuts and declares it a happy food to eat on a day off with her dad.
Thoughts/Review:
Kyaaa! This anime. I tell you what. It is so wholesome, it makes me regret the moments when I’m negative or otherwise unwholesome in my life. Plus, it makes me hungry.
We get to see Kotori’s twintail friend again. It is frustrating when we don’t get names for characters. Japan seems notorious for this at times.
Since Kotori gets a friend, why not Kouhei? At least we got Yagi’s name.
Kotori tailing Yagi and Tsumugi amused me. I can understand her concern for Tsumugi. However, Kotori losing it at the thought of Yagi giving Tsumugi a cigarette cracked me up.
I had thought that Yagi might have something more to say about Kouhei and Kotori. However, he only quietly remarked on how Kouhei seemed to enjoy being with Kotori.
Speaking of feelings, Kotori gave it up in this chapter. Kouhei puts himself down as a plain, normal guy. Yagi is apparently a wild guy. So when Kotori puts up a defense for normal and plain things, we all know she’s talking about Kouhei. Ultimately, Kouhei took it in stride. That said, I think Kotori is expressing her preference for guys like Kouhei. It is a small thing, but I liked that hint of romance there.
I find Kotori’s desire to want to try lots of foods at different establishments to be one I can relate to. Too often, I end up trying a few different things at a restaurant, then end up eating too much. π― Kotori is a sweetheart, but if she were a real person dating me, I’d probably explode from eating too much. π
Finally, I loved the little father-daughter moment at the game center (arcade). In typical fashion, the kid has to teach the adult how to use things like the photo booth. Tsumugi is too adorable for words.
In the end, Sweetness and Lightning 05 is another excellent journey into a wholesome world of food and goodness. I’m really glad I decided to chapter blog this series.
I can usually keep my emotions mostly at bay watching stories like this, as sweet as they may be, because i can keep them at some distance with my eternal battlecry of “give me some plot, damn you!”.
But even my cynical and jaded self suddenly had some suspiciously wet eyes when Tsumugi declares her love for her dad. Must have been something in the air!^^
Also Kotori and her girl friend hanging out and bouncing of each other always makes me cackle with glee!
That’s the ticket. π
Heh!heh! π
