Nibley Twins Re-translate “Negima!” Volumes 1-3!

Nibley Twins Re-translate “Negima!” Volumes 1-3!

In case you weren’t aware, Alethea and Athena Nibley, the current translators of Negima! for Kodansha Comics, have revealed that they were given the job of fixing the first volumes of Negima! for Kodansha Comic’s omnibus release. Basically, they were paid to re-adapt the title but ended up re-translating for the most part, which they did for free since they were only paid for an adaptation.  ^_^;

Negima!

You guys know of my dislike of the early Negima! volumes from Del Rey, so having Alethea and Athena do this pretty much from scratch is a big win as far as I’m concerned.  As such, I’m hoping you Negima! fans will not only buy the omnibus edition when it comes out, but will also let Kodansha Comics know that you appreciate the job Alethea and Athena do on Negima!  After all, Kodansha Comics forced them to take a 40% pay cut on the new volumes of the title compared to what Del Rey used to pay.

  2. Ultimaniac says:

    Yea, that makes sense. Pay the more competent people less -_- C’mon English publishers, get it together! I’m definitely gonna buy the new versions…Then burn the old ones.

  3. Mz says:

    awesome! the twins need to have a raise not a pay cut! stop being cheap kodansha!

  4. 93143 says:

    …looks like I’m going to own three different hardcopy editions of Volume 1…

  5. Veron05 says:

    THANK GOD. I will be buying the omibus and also glad that they redid the translation. Also just read chapter 314 of negima. I just cant stop screaming OMG. K.A did it again. I love this manga

  6. AstroNerdBoy says:

    @92143 — ditto, but that’s OK. ^_^

    Regarding the Twins and Kodansha, my *understanding* (and I could be wrong here) is that the excuse Kodansha is using to pay them less money as translators are scanlations. Yep, scanlations are apparently the reason Kodansha Comics can’t afford to pay proper rates.

    If this is true, that is such complete and total crap. The only reason Kodansha Comics is involved at all is so Kodansha could push aside Del Rey and make more money off of their properties. Then they slash pay rates for the people who make it happen to increase their own profits in a terrible economy. I’ve no problem with a company making as much profit as possible, providing they pay their people what they are worth. Kodansha Comics appears to want to not do this and then point fingers elsewhere.

    OHMYGOAWD PLOT TWIST! New Negima is out. HOLY SHIT! No one could have predicted this. I won’t spoiler though.

    for 20th times~

    X_X~

    i love the way you always inform us Astro-san~

  9. burnpsy says:

    Which other volumes of Negima were translated by them? I’m gonna pick ’em up so I can have a consistent translation.

    Also, do you know if there will be more omnibus releases?

  10. AstroNerdBoy says:

    YW, Clint. ^_^

    @burnpsy — They started with volume 22 IIRC.

    @Theron — review should be publishing in a few minutes. ^_^

  11. burnpsy says:

    @AstroNerdBoy: Thanks for the answer.

    That’s actually rather convenient. If they decide to release re-translated/re-adapted omnibuses for the whole series, one could just pick up the first 7, making volumes 1-21, and get the individual ones for the rest.

    It seriously sucks that they had to take such a large pay cut though.

    from what i could found:
    vol29 – 17 May
    vol1-3 – 14 June
    vol30 – 19 July

    already pre-order on amazon (≧ロ≦)

  13. AstroNerdBoy says:

    I think they are just wrapping up work on volume 30.

  14. Alethea & Athena Nibley says:

    Now, now, let’s not make assumptions. We never said Kodansha was using scanslations as an excuse to lower our pay. We only said we personally blame scanslations. Kodansha’s reason for the paycut was the economy.

  15. Anonymous says:

    Why blame scanslations? The people who aren’t going to buy it, aren’t going to buy it regardless of if they can download it for free.

    My nearest public library has every volume of Negima! and tons of people will sit in Barns & Noble reading manga & books with no intention of ever dropping a dollar on them.

    The only thing really harming the industry is a poor economy and failure to address this issue. Because failing to address that issue has left the population with less money on spend on luxuries. And that’s what manga/anime/books/movies are, luxuries.

    I think you should cut the FUD and stick to the facts when you report on stuff, AstroNerd. It wasn’t cool to claim what the twins never said.

  17. AstroNerdBoy says:

    Point out to me where I made a definite claim as to what the Twins or anyone else said? ^_~ (You can’t because I didn’t as I qualified all of my remarks.)

  18. Anonymous says:

    Come on dude, it’s still a clear claim even if you use words like “apparently”. If you were certain enough to write an entire paragraph to condemn Kodansha, don’t blame me for trusting what you said until the twins stepped in to quash the FUD rumor you started here.

  19. AstroNerdBoy says:

    I also said, “If this is true” and expressed an opinion based on that alone. ^_~ The Twins comment is just to clarify that it was not true and that’s great. I still would like to see them get paid more, wouldn’t you?

  20. Ariel says:

    Pretty neat! Thanks for your work on writing about this, btw. ^-^
