ユーキューホルダー! Manga Review
UQ Holder Chapter 53
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
The overwhelming number of zombies forces Touta, Kuroumaru, Ikkuu, and Santa to retreat to a rooftop cafe. Ikkuu is unable to communicate out and Kuroumaru reports that telepathic signals are being jammed as well. Kuroumaru and Ikkuu have to explain to Touta that the mission is bust and that this zombie outbreak is a disaster that could destroy the world. Touta asks if the zombies can be returned to normal. Kuroumaru states that they cannot be returned to normal, thus must be counted among the dead.
Santa cries and confesses what he told Sayoko in that he wanted to crust the world. Touta hits him in the head, telling him that UQ Holder will deal with this somehow.
Kirei arrives, stating that she had a bad feeling about their mission, so she made a save point prior to coming. As such, she plans to use her reset powers to take them all back, including Santa, to a time before the zombie outbreak. However, before she can act, Sayoko appears, grabs Kirie, and bites her in the neck. Sayoko says Kirie’s powers are against the rules, thus she’s removing Kirie. Touta attacks, but is snared by what appears to be shadow abilities from Sayoko.
Thoughts/Review:
I didn’t expect for Akamatsu-sensei to bring in the ultimate cheat card, then immediately remove her from the field of battle. I figure we’ll get some sort of additional information on Kirie as I don’t believe for a moment that Kirie is out. I figure she’ll end up doing her reset, everyone will live, save Sayoko, who will be killed…or something.
Santa is now firmly on the road to salvation, which surprises none of us. I wonder if he’ll be the one who ends up putting Sayoko away for good.
Beyond that, I’m not finding a lot to discuss since most of the chapter was dealing with zombies, retreating, then losing Kirie. I do note that the rooftop cafe they fled to appears to be the same one in Negima where Negi had his “incident” during the Mahora Festival.
Still, it was an enjoyable chapter. I’m interested in reading you guy’s thoughts on this.
Did Touta never play Biohazard/Resident Evil before? Even I know how to take out zombies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_w-y40sWBk
Jokes aside… well, as stated before, I find Kirie’s power to load the save file too cheap, so at least she’s getting taken out for now. Then again I don’t understand why everyone carelessly talked about the plan without checking whether Sayoko was listening. I imagine Santa will play a very important role in taking her down.
Yeah, I noticed that too. I like the small references.
I got the impression that Sayoko pretty much appeared behind them.
As do I in a tragic moment where Santa has to kill Sayoko.
Those are fun to spot.
I not sure Kirie is out of play yet, since she did create a reset point before leaving home. Most zombie myths state you can kill them by cutting off their heads. Given the story line, and characters, I bet this job will fall to Touta, being the guy with the fancy sword, (although any of the three could do so.)
That leaves me with a question, if you are holding a sword while looping off Kirie’s head, do you get reset along with her?
IIRC, Fate was brought back when he touched Touta (who touched Kirie), not Kirie directly. Maybe if the sword is still in contact with Kirie when her power activates, the wielder will also get brought back.
This brings me to another question; if Kirie is beheaded, with which part of hers do you need to be in contact in order to be brought back? Her head or her body? ^_^
Heh. You guys bring up interesting questions.
Interesting question. I got the feeling that one needed to physically touch Kirie, not touch her with an object.
Didn’t Ikkuu touched her with an “object”. He has a robot body after all.
Good point.
Kirie Lol
I wonder if Kirie can be really a zombie now, maybe she can’t be affected.
Touta doesn’t seem like he can do hurt to Sayoko, but, maybe he uses Magia Erebea…or he loses the control again
The things are very complicated now and they can’t warn to UQ Holder about it. (I think that somehow they will go back to the save point of Kirie again)
Will Karin appear? Will Evangeline appear as always she does in the end?
I wonder that as well. There’s still a lot we don’t know about Kirie.
I kind of doubt that he loses control, but that’s just my thinking.
I’m not expecting to see Karin. Eva showing up for a loli battle might be in the cards. We’ll see though.
I wonder if Touta could counter her bite by biting Kirie himself.
And turning her into a vampire? Now that’s interesting..
She’d have to drink his blood, wouldn’t she?
Oops, forgot that detail.. Then maybe she’ll become like Touta before he drank Eva’s blood?
Anyway, I hope she never got turned into a vampire. If she turned into one, she won’t die, and she won’t be able to use her load ability. I think..
Yeah, there’s just so much we don’t know about Kirie at this point. I don’t think she’ll be turning into vampire though.
I don’t know why, but that line made me laugh as I visualized that.
Maybe I’m looking into it too much, but, well, even if the zombies turn others into zombies by biting them, does that mean sayoko’s bite also turn others into zombies?
Sayoko did say she’s taking away the power, but I wonder how much she knows about the power. Does she even know that Kirie’s power activates when she is dead? She’s touching Kirie in the last page, so doesn’t that mean she will be brought back in time if Kirie’s power activates?
Based on Kuromaru’s words, those turned into zombies are considered dead. But maybe, just maybe, Sayoko didn’t kill Kirie with her bite and only rendered her unconscious. This could impliy that Sayoko knows a lot about Kirie’s power though..
I think that’s what the chapter is implying.
Good questions. I don’t know how much Sayoko knows, but I would presume that Sayoko would be taken back if Kirie died.
She has had years to do research on UQH, so she may know a lot.
Am I the only one who doesn’t really like Sayoko? its just that she just feels like a necromancer version of Evangilian and I never have been a fan of when an author makes a copy of past villains(especially in Evangilians case) because it feel like the author is completely undermining and disrespecting a villain such as Evangilians change to neutrality/good and saying “Maybe I shouldn’t have changed that character to good, well I guess I’ll just make a different version of him/her and this time handle him/her differently than before.” I mean the only thing I can personally think of that could make me like Sayoko a bit more is if Evangilian and Sayoko fight each other and while in that fight allow them to exchange a couple of words that’ll make me think “Well maybe Sayoko isn’t jut a copy of Evangilian” but that’ll probably never happen seeing as how so many people complained about Evangilian jumping in to fight Fate that Ken will more than likely avoid Evangilian as much as possible now.
I don’t have any feelings one way or the other at the moment. When she was introduced, I was hoping she could join UQH as well, but Akamatsu-sensei is setting things up for Santa to be redeemed and Sayoko to burn in hell.
Yes, I noticed the similarities between the two. I think the difference is that Akamatsu-sensei never intended for Eva to be a main antagonist in Negima. I can see Akamatsu-sensei having Eva and Sayoko battle.
Well, that was weak sauce. I’m starting to think all the awesome stuff we’ve been told about UQ Holder was nothing but propaganda. Ikuu and Karin are stating to look like light-weights and Kuroumaru wasn’t any better in this chapter. They know they’re on Danger Ground and they still let themselves be taken that easily?! Even if that is just a setup, to possibly be reversed in the next chapters – that’s weak!
That’s because everyone else has to be downgraded to allow Touta to be Superman. 🙁
This is proving to be one of the most interesting arc of uq holder.
Regarding kirie becoming a zombie. In a sense she is still human and depending on the type of reset she can transfer her soul/mind to her younger body and diverge onto a different world line.
But as a zombie she is technically undead (a form of immortality so to speak) but loses her mind. In this sense what would happen to the mind and soul that is sent back?
Also what could be interesting is what would happen if a zombie bit a vampire like touta?
For ikuu he would immune, kuromaru would have to heal faster than the infection but we don’t know if his immortality provides absolute immunity
Looks like we’ll get some new info next chapter.
I really want to see Eva against Sayoko so badly. In fact I want to see Eva humiliate Sayoko and put her back to her place for being a cheap blatant rip-off version of her. But I don’t want to see Yukihime, she’s boring and she sucks. I want the badass loli vampire version of Eva to appear. People says Western fans complained when Eva appeared against Fate but from I observe the only people who are complaining are Dargor and OverMaster or maybe a few others so I wouldn’t be surprised if they complained again if Eva appeared against Sayoko.
I have to admit that I’d rather enjoy seeing this battle as well.
MK already did FT today. We will likely get it’s UQ spoiler tomorrow.
I couldn’t respond earlier, but I did get notification of this message and was pretty excited. ^_^
