Slayers REVOLUTION 07

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Lina, Gourry, Amelia, Zelgadiss, and Pokota are on a ship heading for their next destination all on Amelia’s dime. As such, Lina sets up reservations for herself and Gourry to have a feast while Zelgadiss gets a much needed massage. A porter signals their table is ready so Lina and Gourry race to the ship’s restaurant to scarf on food with Pokota hot on their tail; a fork flies out narrowly missing the critter and embedding in the deck. As the trio eat in their normal, unsophisticated manner, a waitress brings out their main course. It turns out to be a giant leech that’s trying to eat them, but Gourry soon dispatches it and discovers that it doesn’t taste half-bad.

Meanwhile, as Amelia and Zelgadiss walk through the ship, two crewmen pass them when suddenly, cases filled with various weapons (mostly bladed) falls on them, forcing Zelgadiss to cast a wind spell to protect himself and Amelia. In the ship’s bath, Gourry and Pokota are bathing when someone pulls the plug on the tub Pokota is relaxing in. This causes a whirlpool to form which nearly drowns Pokota until he’s rescued by another bather. Afterward on deck, Lina and company receive a message arrow which tells them not to try to escape lest the passengers on the ship lose their lives.

Deciding to smoke out their assassin, Lina and Pokota stage a fight where they trade insults. Pokota’s insults strike pretty close to home where Lina has to restrain herself. However, she decides at some point to toss Pokota and the Sword of Light overboard as part of the fight. To her surprise, everyone on the ship jumps overboard to try to retrieve the Sword of Light, meaning they are all working for Marquis Gioconda. On the dingy tailing the ship, Amelia prepares to cast a fire-based spell but Zelgadiss beats her to the punch with a lightning-based spell. This shocks and stuns everyone, rendering them neutralized.

On the ship, Lina discovers the real assassin — Zuuma. She’s in a battle with him and manages to get off a few offensive spells which draws Amelia’s and Zelgadiss’s attention. Upon learning that Zuuma is the one attacking Lina, Zelgadiss relays the seriousness of the situation to Amelia as they race back to the ship. Lina finds herself trying to fend off Zuuma with her dagger since Zuuma’s attack style prevents her from launching spells. Gourry arrives to save Lina (having been napping, awaiting the arrival of an assassin) just after she’s been disarmed. When Gourry announces he’s Lina’s bodyguard, Zuuma decides he needs to be eliminated first.

With that, Zuuma creates a dark cloud which prevents Lina and company from seeing anything or casting spells. Gourry is clearly in trouble, but it is not until Pokota activates the faux Sword of Light that the tide turns as the sword dispels the darkness. This allows Amelia, Zelgadiss, and Lina to attack, which forces Zuuma to retreat. As Lina punishes Pokota for his insults, Zuuma is at another location vowing to take care of Lina.

Thoughts/Review:

This episode is much improved over last week’s sub-par episode. Even if this hadn’t contained plot advancement (which it didn’t seem it would have initially), this episode actually had me laughing, especially the insults between Pokota and Lina. Both know how to push each other’s buttons and for now, it is funny to me. The food jokes are still funny for me, but I admit that Gourry’s sampling the giant leech really cracked me up for some reason. So there were a lot of smiles and laughs here.

Zuuma’s arrival was a sweet moment. I remember him from then novels though I don’t remember his darkness ability having the effect of also removing people’s spell power. Regardless, I look forward to seeing more of him as he is a worthy opponent of Lina and company.

Hopefully, I can continue reviewing the series for you guys. Bear with me as it may be slower than it was before.

I recently read the novels featuring Zuuma and I believe you are correct. I believe Dark Mist merely makes it hard/nigh impossible to see an opponent and therefore makes them difficult to hit with spells…

Ah. That sounds right. The only thing I remember causing Lina spell problems was the mazoku that put a seal on her powers (both in the anime and in the novels).

    Thanks for the note. ^_^
