Crazy Japanese Commute (Or How Many Japanese Can Be Crammed Into A Train)

When I lived in Japan, I never went out and about during the morning or evening commute times simply because there is NO way I would ever put up with this (and yes, I heard stories about this kind of crowding way back then). How would you like to be packed in like this?

In the U.S., there’s a push in some big cities for more light rail systems and while I have no problem with light rail as such per se, this is worse than being in rush-hour traffic. At least there, I’m sitting comfortably in my car. ^_^;

Thanks to the FAIL blog for sharing this bit of Japanese life.

    Depending on the length of the ride, I don’t think I’d mind being packed in all that much. It’s the price to pay for cheap and fast transportation, and though the cases aren’t nearly as extreme, there’s definitely that lovely overcrowdedness on many trains and subways in and around New York, where I work summers.

    As for other cities, I am an adamant supporter of more light rail and train systems, mostly because I’m not fond of driving. Since other cities aren’t nearly as populated as New York, I imagine that the crowding problem would be significantly less, and thus much, much, much less than the problem in Tokyo. :3

    Ah, that takes me back…now I’ll be having nightmares for about the next week.

    That’s just insane. How does one get off if they need to?

  4. I’ve heard of being packed in like sardines and now I’ve seen it. If I didn’t know better, I’d think this were some staged stunt.

    Astro, you’ve lived in Japan? cool, what was it like? because the only sense of Japan i get, are from manga. that’s why i’ve been trying to visit Japan. If you think this subway ride will be uncomfortable for men, think about the women, they might get thing done to them and don’t know who.

    Keeping in mind that I lived there nearly 20-years ago, I will say that it was different living in Japan. It wasn’t until I left that I realized how much I enjoyed Japan, so much so that I often joke that I left a piece of myself there. ^_^
