AniBlog Tournament!

Whoa! I just found out that this here blog has been placed into the AniBlog Tournament, voting for which is ongoing now. My blog comes up for a vote on April 28th. Amazingly, I start in 47th place. Landing in the top-50 considering the bigger and older blogs out there is quite an honor as far as I’m concerned. If I go further, well that’s just icing on the cake. ^_^

The brackets are listed here (courtesy of Josh) for those interested.

My blog aside, this is a good opportunity to sample other anime-centric blogs out there. ^_^

    Congratulations on getting picked.

The selection process was a bit of a joke, unfortunately. That said, congrats nonetheless. I like green so I might vote for you.

@lolikitsune — I like green so I might vote for you.

*LOL* Thanks for the laugh. ^_^

    Congratulations on getting picked.

That said, getting assigned a random rank by random people using random methodology is — need I say it? — random. I looked through the list of participants and there were at least two well-respected anime blogs I read all the time that weren’t picked. My guess is because they don’t try to capitalize on popular series and focus on writing quality articles instead of frequent stream of consciousness posts, and they don’t get involved in aniblogosphere politics. I’m not saying all or even most of the blogs picked are made of meaningless fluff, but the picking criteria they used don’t necessarily favor quality.

I like your blog and I hope you’ll do well in the tournament, but in the end contests like this are only useful to give some promotion to the selected participants. The results will be pretty meaningless, especially as there are easy ways for vote manipulation — which will no doubt be employed by many of the blogs involved ^_^;;;. Personally I’ll just treat this as a fun game, nothing more.

@anonymous Which two blogs are you referring to?

I don’t know about “random rank” since almost all of the BYE week blogs are ones I consider “big dogs.”

I will say that I’ve no clue how they decided to rank anyone but then I haven’t checked either. I wouldn’t have even known about this but someone brought it to my attention.

Which two blogs, if I may ask (assuming you pop back in here)?

Ditto. Whether I end up number 1 (*LOL*) or last doesn’t matter. I’ll do a plug for votes on the day I come up just because.

I hope you’re happy Astro, ’cause you’re now officially part of the big circle jerk!

Geeze… I always liked your blog because you just did your thing and didn’t got out of your way to “be part of the community” by spamming comments and links like most anime bloggers do.

// Dunno if this got through on the first try or not due to some network hickup. Delete this if it’s a copy.

Did you sign up to get included or something?

Was my comment rejected? Then I think you misunderstood what I was saying. My point was that too many anime bloggers seem to feel they have to put lots of useless links to other blogs in their posts and comment at other blogs not because they have a lot to say but to get referrals. It’s often called circle jerk or circle wank. It’s refreshing to read blogs like yours that don’t participate in that, but now I’m afraid they’ve roped you in.

  10. I held your comments because of the use of terminology. We decided to allow it through in the end. ANB can make a response if he so decides.

No. I did nothing and only learned of my inclusion via 2nd hand sources.

Hmmmm. I occasionally link to someone else, but only if there is justification (someone said something that I felt they should get credit for, or recently in the case of “Negima!,” letting fans know of an excellent resource.

That said, if you are really worried about my suddenly changing my blogging style, you’ll note that I’m part of AnimeBlips. The way you rise in rank on that site is by being linked to from other sites. Likely, this is why you see so much of this “circle” society. Regardless, I’ve been a member for quite some time and have done nothing to make myself endeared to other bloggers in order to get a cross link. ^_^

Bottom line: This changes nothing. Hopefully, it will bring in a few more people to give the blog a look-see, but to be honest, I don’t expect it will do much more than that.

    @Astro

If you’re not going to change, that’s reassuring. I wasn’t talking about useful linking of the kind you described, there’s no problem with that. You’ve been around as much as I have, I’m sure you know about the phenomenon I meant. I know you wouldn’t just suddenly change for no reason, but I was a little worried that this might get you more focused on popularity rankings.

    @Frank Ostrike

Seriously, “terminology”? Well I’m sorry, but people don’t say “circle smeg”, if that’s what would have suited you better. I was trying to compliment Astro for NOT being in that circle, you know. Pardon me for not being PC enough about it, geeze…

Hurrmm, I feel I should answer some of the things people are saying here

“getting assigned a random rank by random people using random methodology is — need I say it? — random”

The rankings were based on age, google page rank and animeblips rank, age being the most important factor.

The selection process for blogs came from Animenano and animeblips. If a blog you know isn’t in the tourney then it’s probably because it didn’t fill the criteria. It has to be an ~ANIME~ blog. No news blogs, no figurene blogs, no manga-only blogs and no ‘proffesional’ blogs like AnimeVice and Japanator.

“Personally I’ll just treat this as a fun game, nothing more.”

    That’s exactly what it is

“I will say that I’ve no clue how they decided to rank anyone but then I haven’t checked either. I wouldn’t have even known about this but someone brought it to my attention.”

Thats out bad. We should have contacted people competing beforehand

“It’s refreshing to read blogs like yours that don’t participate in that, but now I’m afraid they’ve roped you in.”

Actually this tourney was made for people like yourself to find good blogs. Try visiting every once in a while and see if you can find a blog that sparks your interest

Scamp, you people are much too self-conscious. Maybe you bit off too much if you’re compelled to go around “justifying” your project like this. Not everyone is going to be interested in this and you shouldn’t expect any different. Also in my opinion not informing the blogs you selected before you announced them was presumptuous and rude.

I honestly don’t give a rat’s posterior about this latest fad, but if ANB is interested in it I may vote for him just for the heck of it.

  15. AstroNerdBoy says:

    Thanks Scamp. ^_^
