Remembering Space Invaders, Japanese Style

Remembering Space Invaders, Japanese Style

On April 1, 2008, TAITO and Yahoo! Japan did a nifty little thing to celebrate the 30th aniversary of the game Space Invaders. TAITO sent out a message to me and some folks a few days ago touting the archived version of the Space Invaders take over of Yahoo! Japan’s website back then.

Its weird playing the game with a mouse. *lol*

BTW, it is game over if you get shot vs. having two other plays. I haven’t tried to actually make it through but maybe when I have a bit more time. I’m guessing there’s only one level but if any of you make it through, let me know.

I wonder how many quarters I spent on this and other games when I was a kid. Play in the arcade, then come home and play on the Atari. Fun times.

I heard that. *lol* I didn’t play much Space Invaders in the arcade though, but I did play a lot of other games.

Only one level. And it doesn’t appear to be downloadable from outside of Japan, if I’m reading the Google ranslate version of the page correctly.

Ah, Space Invaders. One of my favorite Taito games besides Arkanoid, Darius, and the “Ray” series (Rayforce, Raystorm, Raycrisis)

@Quigonkenny — I’m not surprised that it isn’t downloadable outside of Japan. The original ROMS I believe weren’t supposed to be sold outside of Japan. Private collectors manage to get them just the same though.

@Zeether — Twin Cobra is by far my favorite Taito game. I remember a friend and I both spending a quarter each and getting through the WHOLE thing. That’s when we learned that the game eventually cycled back on itself to the first level, but shifted the graphics over a bit so that it didn’t look 100% the same. I lost my last chopper shortly after that. If I ever get money, that would be an arcade game I’d love to have in my basement.

Rastan was another Taito game I spent WAY to many quarters on back in the day. *lol*
