What Classic Anime To Watch Next?

Now that I’ve finished watching the Dirty Pair TV series, to include the Lovely Angel 2-episode OVA’s that were originally supposed to be part of the TV series, I found myself needing to add another anime title to the list. Granted, I never did finish the last Inuyasha anime (I may marathon it one day) and there are some Keroro Gunsou episodes I could watch. However, I’ve always had two classic anime titles on the docket to go along with whatever else I might be watching. So, I want to start something new.

As I started the consideration process, my mind thought of some classic anime titles I’ve seen such as Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Space Battleship Yamato (and Yamato 2), Dirty Pair, Bubblegum Crisis (the original 80’s OVA series), Urusei Yatsura, etc. I thought about how Dirty Pair had been cut off due to low ratings but went on to inspire a cult hit. That reminded me of another series that got canceled due to low ratings back when it came out but has gone on to be one of the most (if not the most) successful and profitable franchise in the business — the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

I never watched Gundam when I was in Japan though I was aware of it. I don’t believe Robert ever brought the anime home but he may have picked up a couple of Gundam models. Regardless, this father of the “real robot” mecha genre is something that has been in the back of my mind to watch for some time. Why? Well, I’m curious to see how a series that got canceled ended up becoming the monstrous cash cow it is today. Plus, I feel there’s something to be learned from watching classic anime and seeing how it affects today’s products, if at all.

So, the original, classic Gundam series it is. I’m looking forward to it. ^_^

You could try Maze the Megaburst Space TV / OVA. One of my favorites even though manga was a lot better.

A fine choice! I will be looking forward to it.

Did you have any stuff in the blog on Super Dimension Fortress Macross?

@Nick — I generally read manga before dropping off to sleep. As such, I actually end up doing more manga than anime. *lol*

@Anon — That one is unknown to me and thus not in the collection. ^_^;;; I’ll look into it though.

@Bonehimer — Episode 1 should be up within a week.

@Philip — I watched Macross long before I started blogging. I did review it for Community Anime Reviews though.

Hey astro did you watch the movie Macross “Do you remember love?”?. I watched it this summer and even though the story is different I thought it was awesome.

I’m a Gundam fan, so I’ve caught a lot of it over the years. I’ve never seen the MS Gundam TV series, though I did have all three of the movies on video tape. The dub for the first movie was quite possibly one of the worst ever due to translational issues…

    >.< The Gundam continuity that MS Gundam spawned (i.e. UC Gundam) continues to have video releases to this day. Gundam Unicorn is a six episode OVA series that’s in the process of release, with one episode being released every six months. The first episode was released earlier this year, and iirc the next episode is due out in November. You should take a look. The animation is quite good, and the artists went to the trouble of giving their characters clothes and hairstyles that fit in with the appearence of things back during the classic UC stories (Unicorn is set a few years after Char’s Counterattack, and includes one character who should be recognizable to anyone who’s watched Gundam Z and ZZ).

I’m wondering if Gundam Unicorn would spoil things for the original series? I’m grabbing the first episode now though.

If it weren’t for the fact that there’s an OVA series set much later entitled “Char’s Counter-Attack”, it might.

But there is a series with that title. So I doubt that anything will be spoiled by watching Gundam Unicorn.

    😛

It’s funny cause I actually just started watching it as a precursor to watching the rest. I like to start at the beginning so I figured I’d watch the original before moving on to the newer series.
