Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 451 Review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 451Having learned what she needed, Athena says she’ll let Hayate take care of the rest, cautioning Ikusa that he might take his treasure. He scoffs at the notion since raising money isn’t that easy, but Athena reminds him that Hayate was led by Ikusa and trained by her.

Back in the abandoned village, Hayate and Hina discuss this mysterious spice. Deciding that they can’t search randomly, Hayate suggests searching the village. Hina is worried about the ghosts, but Hayate says they’ve done enough of that and is pushing ahead.  Hina is not amused, but she does start her search. In the house she enters, she encounters a ghoul-ghost that threatens to curse her, but Hayate arrives, pokes it in the eyes, then has it sit seiza and give him information about the spice.

As the ghoul-ghost knows nothing, Hayate has it bring others. He then learns of a pirate treasure trove, hidden in a mountain cave. Learning the location, Hayate proposes going to it, but the ghoul-ghosts warn of the dangers. He says that all he needs is courage, and his words inspire the ghoul-ghosts, one of which asks if they can become a doctor. When Hayate confirms it, the ghoul-ghosts are much cheered.

Hina and Hayate head to the pirate cave. Just outside the cave, Hayate sees a rope trap. They are thankful they were warned by the ghoul-ghosts about the trap, but they trigger an infrared sensor, causing a rock slide trap. Hina destroys some of the boulders, allowing the two to head into the cave. Inside, they find treasure chests, but when they open a chest, it contains a package of Boso Curry mix.

Thoughts/Review:

I totally don’t get the frog reference. Is it another Keroro Gunsou reference?  I doubt it. I figure it is probably a Japanese play on words.

Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 451

Anyway, this was a pretty funny chapter. I got a kick out of Hata-sensei apparently pulling the plug on Hina being afraid of ghosts by having Hayate declare that enough was enough (in a polite way). Then when the ghoul-ghost appeared, Hayate goes Three Stooges on them. *lol*  Not only that, but he makes them sit seiza, including Jason. ^_^

Working this in as a pirate treasure made the payoff funny to me. I should have expected something like packaged curry mix, but hey, I didn’t and so it was funny. (As an aside, I think I’ll make some curry this weekend.)  I couldn’t find a curry mix (the bar stuff in a package) that looked like the brand in the manga, but I figure there likely is one out there.

Finally, I did like that last little bit with Athena. I figure she’ll be a kid when Hayate and Hina return, so they’ll never know what happened. Further, I’m not sure Ah-tan will remember much either, but we’ll see.

So a really enjoyable, fun and funny chapter. Time to move to the competition.

  1. By the way, I don’t think Hayate was the one she was referring to when she said she’d let her companion take care of the rest. Seemed to be an accomplice for whatever she wants to do with the King’s Jewels and the Royal Garden.

Haha! Totally didn’t notice that Jason was there among the ghosts. Also, Ikusa’s got some nerve calling it a competition when it’s just a one-sided win-win situation for him anyway…. also, now you’ve got me craving some curry too. I think I’ll buy one of those instant vegetable curry packs they sell at Saizen here.

Kinda disappointed that Isumi and Sakuya never made an appearance with ghosts and all involved.

Initially I thought something like that as well, but then after rereading it, I decided that wasn’t right. It does give Hata-sensei wiggle room though.

The Japanese (at least the mangaka) seem to like him for some reason. I’ve seen him show up in manga and anime, or just be mentioned (like in Fruits Basket).

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seemed to be a setup for them to arrive. But then Hayate is still doing his “large and in charge” thing.

Just FYI, two new chapters of Genshiken have been released (on Batoto) since your last chapter review. I figured you’d be interested.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Oh, I’m VERY interested! The special project I’ve been on of late occupies a lot of my time (I was up at 03:00 this morning to work from home). Thanks for letting me know. ^_^

Just to let you know, the front page of this blog is seriously hosed when browsing without Javascript, which I’m forced to do at the moment. It’s a mess of overlapping text and images. Interestingly, the category sections and individual posts look fine.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, that’s the slider feature. Works nicely when Javascript is active, but when it isn’t, it does cause problems. I’ll have to look into that.
