Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 2wei! Episode 10 REVIEW
Fate/kaleid liner プリズマ☆イリヤ
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei! – 10 Finale
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
As Miyu-Rider attacks Bazett with Bellerophone, Bazett readies her Fragarach weapon/attack, which causes time to go back slightly to where Miyu activates Bellerophone, then attempts to pierce Miyu’s heart. Somehow, Miyu avoids the death blow, but Rider is ejected from her, which Bazett retrieves. Now with six cards, Bazett gets ready to kill Kuro to gain the seventh card. Ilya comes to realize that Rin has placed a curse on the back of Bazett’s neck, so as Kuro attempts to defend herself, Ilya gets close and manages to activate Assassin. Bazett takes out Kuro and then attacks Ilya, only to discover the Assassin card was a decoy. Ilya moves to reach the nape of Bazett’s neck, and she’s aided when Luvia attacks from below ground.
Rin arrives and explains that with contact made, Bazett can no longer use her Fragarach without creating a paradox and killing herself. Further, any pain she inflicts on Ilya will be felt by Bazett as well. Bazett says pain can be ignored and is going to attack Ilya anyway, but Rin produces a ley line map, revealing the location of an unexpected eighth card, something Miyu says shouldn’t exist. Since Rin is the only one who could possibly get the card, Bazett cannot fulfill her mission to get all cards. She decides to back down and consult with the Mage Association. Rin negotiates for the return of three of the six cards that Bazett took before Bazett leaves. With that, the exhausted and dirty Ilya and Kuro return home to a quick bath and bed.
The following day, Miyu is dropped off at the elementary school to join Ilya and Kuro while Luvia and Rin continue on in the limo to discuss things and secretly plot against each other. At school, the trio meet the other girls in their group, where it is noted that Kuro and Ilya look tired. When Kuro mentions having slept with Ilya, imaginations run wild and Miyu demands an explanation. That night, Kuro wakes up to find Ilya out on the balcony, unable to sleep. The two have a chat, where Ilya reveals that she’s happy for the day they had and the fact that they were able to protect their regular lives. Kuro wonders about the future. Ilya agrees, since they still have to buy swimsuits for their forthcoming beach party.
Thoughts/Review:
And so it all comes to an end…for now.
I was on the right path when it came to my thinking about Rin and what she did to Bazett.
Rin is on the way and seems to have done something to Bazett. … The only other thing I can think of is that Rin has another curse up her sleeve, but if that’s the case, then why didn’t she activate it when she attacked?
I wasn’t thinking about a specific curse linked to Ilya, but that explains why she didn’t activate it — Ilya had to. I like the fact that the story admits that this was an “asspull” (pardon the expression), but they at least had cover because of Rin’s earlier curse on Kuro. I wish the nape of Bazett’s neck had revealed something last episode. Maybe it did and I missed it, but until Ilya started saying something about having seen markings on Bazett’s neck and putting two and two together, there was little other indication that something had happened to Bazett.
Regarding the truce established between Bazett and the girls, I don’t see why Bazett even gave up any of the six cards she had. Her backing down because there’s an eighth card that only Rin can track down makes sense. I can even see her deciding to grant Kuro her life to help the cause. However, after that, I don’t see why she’d give up any cards, much less three. We didn’t get to see what Rin argued for as a reason to cause Bazett to cough up three, but the only thing I can think of is that she argued they might need card power to overcome and capture this eighth card.
***ADDITIONAL SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN (or know anything about) FATE/STAY NIGHT!!!!!***
As to this eighth card, Miyu’s flashback reaction (why a flashback and not have that done in real time?), it reveals that she knows more about the cards than she’s let on. Regardless, this eighth card is one of two things — either it is something we’ve never seen before, or it is something we’ve seen before in Fate/stay night. Considering that the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya universe is mirroring Fate/stay night in terms of the Heroic Spirits in the cards, then in my mind, the eight card would also mimic the eighth Heroic Spirit in Fate/stay night. That would mean that this new card would be also be Archer, which would be Gilgamesh’s Heroic Spirit. If I’m right, that would be freaking awesome! I hope I’m right.
After the fight was over, things felt a bit stretched, which was unfortunate. I like aftermath, so most of it was OK, but the whole announcing of the new series helped add to the stretched feeling in my opinion.
Regardless, I was amused by how Ilya and Kuro were when they returned. They really have become sisters, haven’t they? Although servicing the two girls when they collapsed on Ilya’s bed was not needed, I couldn’t help but think about Kuro’s need for mana/prana. She had to use a ton in the battle, and since that’s her only method of survival, I was surprised that it didn’t come up the following day. I thought that something should have been done to address this, even a throw away line to suggest that power had been transferred from Ruby to Kuro, even if it had to be through Ilya.
I’m still disappointed that Iri didn’t show up to be a mama bear on Bazett. I get the feeling that she knows what Kuro and Ilya were up to, but is just staying out of it. I guess you could say that Iri is putting a lot of faith in her daughter’s ability to take care of themselves. Still, it would be cool to see Iri unleashed.
Thinking back on Bazett, if her Fragarach weapon is supposed to kill the user of a Nobel Phantasm, then how did Miyu live? Maybe I missed something, but that was never clear to me.
Finally, there was Rin and Luvia. I have to say that I was disappointed that the reset button was being pressed on their relationship as Luvia remarked on how she never thought they’d have a conversation like friends. Having the two be rivals over poor Shirou, I’m OK with that. However, after this incident with Bazett, which is clearly unresolved, combined with this mysterious and possibly powerful eighth card, I didn’t like both Rin and Luvia being show to secretly be plotting against each other. Yeah, I know that they are in competition to be an apprentice to a powerful mage, but they are old enough to know better.
If it were me, have their comedy bickering limited to whenever Shirou is around and they are trying to catch his eye. However, when it comes to the cards and such, they should be the team they were against Bazett. But that’s just me.
I’ll write some final thoughts about the series next week. In the meantime, despite some stretching at the end of the episode, I really liked how things came together and ultimately ended. I can’t wait for Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei Herz! to come out next year. ^_^
If there’s an eight card/heroic spirit, then it would have to be Avenger and not Gil Archer. It also makes sense since Avenger became Bazett’s servant in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia… anyway, convoluted… Nasu plotlines are convoluted.
I’m not really that familiar with Fate/Hollow Ataraxia other than the name. I have heard of Avenger, but beyond that, I know nothing about the character.
I remember after the chapter revealing the existence of the 8th card came out, people were speculating whether it’s Gilgamesh’s or Avenger’s card. Luvia and Bazett themselves appear mostly in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, so Avenger appearing shouldn’t be too out of question.
Had I been versed on Avenger, I would have mentioned that. But after now seeing two of you mention that character and the linkage to Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, that could well be the card. I’d still like to see Gilgamesh’s Archer card though. ^_~
On how Miyu survived: I believe it’s explicitly stated in the episode that, because the Pegasus attacked, the heart-piercing was directed to it, and not to Miyu
I probably just missed that. I thought that as the one directing the attack, Miyu would get hit.
U are very smart btw, but I won’t say anything more regarding the second set.
Just bare in mind that the cards are a set from a different holy grail war.
It not really mirroring fate stay night it just ‘fate’ and destiny that the holy grail war has to happen I guess hence why the first set corresponds with fate stay night
I guess my presumption was on there having been another card-based Holy Grail War in an alternate universe, thus the seven Heroic Spirit cards would be from that war (ie. the ones from Fate/Zero).
To me, the “asspull” didn’t bother me since it was half bluff. Also, it didn’t even get them the win, ultimately, she withdrew because she needs Rin and Luvia’s help to get the 8th card and needed to get further orders from her superiors.
By the way, since the curse isn’t fatal this also implies that she was bluffing too against Kuro, and Kuro’s curse wouldn’t kill her if she had killed Illya. Hah, she’s successfully bluffed opponents twice with that.
I never got the feeling that the fatal part of the curse was a bluff. As I saw it, bluff was in the fact that Rin tried to make it seem like she had prepared the curse ahead of time specifically to deal with Bazett rather than still having a jewel infused with Ilya’s blood from when they put the curse on Kuro (conveniently, which is the “asspull”) .
No, in her internal monologue she says: “Yeah right, it’s impossible for it to transmit death, and there’s a limit to the pain that it can convey. But I have to press this bluff.” (from crunchyroll) Right before then they were talking about how she set up for it with one of her jewel attacks earlier, so I can see why you thought the “yeah right” was related to it, but it’s actually about the strength of the maleficium curse.
I didn’t do my usual dual watching of this episode when I wrote the review, so I probably misremembered the scene in question. However, on a whim, I did go out to the manga to see what was stated there.
http://bato.to/read/_/61561/fatekaleid-liner-prisma%E2%98%86illya-2wei_v02_ch16_by_suimasen-scans/23
Seeing the curse in action, when Ilya got knocked out, Kuro did as well. And the whole point of a blood curse is to link two people together so that if one dies (Ilya), the other does as well (Kuro). So I’m sure that influenced my thinking a lot as I recalled the scene in question. However, the manga does appear to back up the notion that the death aspect was just a bluff on Rin’s part. I’m actually kind of disappointed because Rin and Luvia put their faith in a gall-filled bluff to keep Ilya alive. But that’ sjust me.
Thanks for the correction. ^_^
Man, I’m so tired. How can vacation be tiring…? ^_^
Anyway, as I suspected since episode 1 aired, the season ended with chapter 16 (and tiny bits of the interlude chapter 16.5). And as I hoped, we got a second part of 2wei, but I’ll talk about that later.
Already stated in the comments, but to make that clear: The pegasus is the one who was hit by Fragarach (http://bato.to/read/_/61560/fatekaleid-liner-prisma%E2%98%86illya-2wei_v02_ch15_by_suimasen-scans/17), since it was the pegasus that did the attack. If Miyu had used Saber, she would have died.
Fragarach, sometimes known as The Retaliator or The Answerer is the sword of the Celtic war god Lugh, a sword that was also once in possession of his son, Cu Chulainn (FSN-Lancer). It is a high-class Noble Phantasm, one of the few remaining Noble Phantasms left in the modern world that also does not belong to a Heroic Spirit but to humans. The gods gave Fragarach to the Fraga family along with the knowledge of mystic runes for their loyal servitude and it has been passed on for thousands of years.
Remember when I mentioned the Fraga family’s Sorcery Trait Tradition Carrier – Gods Holder? It’s a pathogen they pass on which allows its Carrier to use Fragarach (Carrier being a term here, hence in capitals). The container Bazett always carries around contains up to five lead balls, that Bazett prepared to use Fragarach. Bazett must conduct a special ritual and pour her blood over the ball. She then must leave the ball for one month in the basement. Bazett can prepare around ten balls with this method every year.
Fragarach’s Answerer effect (sometimes called That which comes after/later cuts first ) changes fate, using time as its blade. Its effect is only usable when the opponent uses his or her strongest attack, making it the ultimate counterattack (This also makes it useless against those who possess no special ability like FSN-Caster. There is a weaker, low-level non-Answerer version of Fragarach though.). What usually results in a mutual death turns into a sole victory for an unharmed Bazett, as Fragarach jumps back in time right before the opponent uses his/her attack to pierce the enemy’s heart and since the opponent dies before he or she can use it, the attack never comes and Bazett survives. It’s a reverse of cause and effect (as in altering events), yet not in the same way Gae Bolg reverses cause and effect.
If Bazett for instance uses it against Saber’s Excalibur, Saber will die with Excalibur never unleashed. Since Fragarach cheats by using time travel, which is basically some form of true magic, it caused endless powerlevel debates btw. The attack Kuro uses against Bazett is called Crane Wing Three Realm, one of Archer’s secret techniques that only he can use, as it requires three pairs of Kanshou and Bakuya. It is an unavoidable attack, similar to Assassin’s Tsubame Gaeshi (and Bazett basically just tanked the attack).
Some of the latter half was filler, some was expanded from the manga. I wonder if they will animate the interlude chapter. I’m honestly glad they changed the scenes with Kuro and Ilya to more sibling bonding and didn’t adapt the… self-cest implied tones (http://bato.to/read/_/61561/fatekaleid-liner-prisma%E2%98%86illya-2wei_v02_ch16_by_suimasen-scans/29 and the next page).
As stated in the comments already, the whole curse is a bluff actually. Yes, pain is conveyed… up to a certain level, but the whole death part is a big fat lie and in-character with Rin, who does kinda rely on tricking the opponent. Honestly, if Kuro ever bothered to analyze the curse’s magical structure (and we know she can do it, her magical knowledge is vast), she could have easily dispelled it, because it’s really not the super awesome obscure curse, Rin made it look like. Not like Kuro really cared at that time. Her mood swings really fit FSN-Ilya’s personality and character.
They hold the cards in pledge. Comes with the price of Rin, Second Owner (the administrator/supervisor) of Fuyuki, allowing Bazett in the first place to get the card. And as you’ve said, if they are to help and cooperate, they will need the cards.

As for the eighth card… Avenger or Archer, keep guessing (or read the manga). 😛 Btw, Avenger is from FSN actually. Was probably one of the most important Servants in the Fuyuki Grail Wars.
Well, as I’ve said one year ago, Luvia definitely likes Rin. Rin liking Luvia though… not so sure. There is that time when Rin and Shirou visit the Clock Tower in London and Shirou ends up becoming Luvia’s butler… yeah. Imagine how that ended. It’s really just for laughs and I’m fine with it.
Btw, about the ending card (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BxL91LGCcAEkcFD.jpg:large)… see that girl between Caren and Bazett? That’s the mangaka of Prisma Illya. Yeah, not exactly… (Hiroyama Hiro is a guy) It’s Hiroya Mahiro.

http://i.imgur.com/FWjby1H.png
She was originally a little girl, but was cursed into the form of a disgusting nerd for 3 years, but finally escaped thanks to Prisma Illya fans everywhere. Except the skin of the disgusting nerd still retains its sentience even after Mahiro separated from it. Or something like that.
Yeah, my thoughts about the second part will be in your final thoughts article. Very soon. ^_^
I wanted to add, Kuro doesn’t exactly use Archer’s technique here. It is probably based on it, though. Archer’s version looks a bit different and also involves a Kanshou & Bakuya Overedge (http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121207161144/typemoon/images/b/b4/ArcherCW.gif).
(DEEN probably attempted to show it in the 2006 FSN anime when Archer fought Berserker, but all I remember are exploding swords…)
To clarify, that refers to the eighth card Bazett and didn’t get yet. It’s deep underground (so they have to dig a bit) and with Rin present in Fuyuki, Bazett needs Rin’s approval to operate.
Ah, that’s a bit different than how I had understood things. I had thought that Rin was the only one who could reach the card, not that she was “master” of a territory. Interesting.
The answer is both. Rin knows where the card is located and she has access to the leylines as the supervisor of Fuyuki. I didn’t mention that because the translation made that clear already.
OK, now I’m clear on this. Thanks. ^_^
As always, thanks for the great info. ^_^
I presume that these balls are one shot deals, meaning if Bazett uses five balls, after than, she’s vulnerable to ultimate attacks.
That was very interesting stuff. Thanks. ^_^
Yeah, they did change that quite a bit in the anime.
I presume that comes out later in the manga.
I’m going to go the guessing route. Avenger wasn’t in the F/sn anime, at least not that I recall. He was in the original visual novel?
You know, I wondered who that was. I assumed it was just another image of Ilya.
I look forward to them. ^_^
Correct, every ball can only be used once. Then again, in most cases, Bazett doesn’t need Fragarach’s Answerer power and five certain kills for one mission should be more than enough in most cases I think.

Heavy spoilers…having watched FSN, will this impact me watching the remake series?
It’s a major (and I really mean major) plot reveal in FSN. It’s not really gonna impact you watching the remake series, since that information is only revealed in HF, but I still advise you to not read this.
OK, I’ll pass then. ^_^
Ah. That would explain why I was unaware.
Btw, small correction here. Fragarach’s Answerer effect works on trump cards (whatever the hell the definition is), not just on attacks. Bazett could use it on Berserker’s God Hand too, which is defensive and passive in nature.
Thanks for the info. ^_^
Oh, and another side info I forgot:
The curse of shared pain is probably based on a Noble Phantasm of another Servant in another Fate/ related work, who was able to mirror the pain and thus reflect the damage back on their soul.
As the Servant himself called it, it’s a “shitty, worthless third-rated Noble Phantasm” because you need to get hurt, stay alive and conscious, the damage isn’t multiplied or something, and it will simply disappear and not kill the cursed one if he dies.
Well, it really is a shitty Noble Phantasm I guess, especially if Rin can achieve a similar result. ^_^
Thanks for the info.
