Another ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Anime Parody

Another ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Anime Parody

Hey gang.

While we wait for UQ Holder spoilers, and while I get my home office ready to get new furniture so that I can start working from home, I thought I’d do a quick post, going back to the Grand Theft Auto parody table, this time featuring Black Lagoon.

Black Lagoon

I’ve never seen Black Lagoon, though I am well aware of it. It has never been put on my list of things to watch, but then again, it has never been recommended to me in any fashion.

Well, I’ve got to get back to it. I’ve got a ton of work to do before my new furniture gets here, not to mention all the work I’ll have to do after it gets here. But, it will be worth it since I’ll be working from home. ^_^

This would actually be really awesome.
Southeast Asia as a location for a GTA game sounds really interesting.

Hmmm, what I’m about to do is probably very cruel then – I’m officially putting Black Lagoon on your list! Muahahah!

No, seriously! Black Lagoon usually gets hyped for its mature content, mostly the action and violence, but what is often overlooked in those kinds of adolescent crazes is that its also pretty damn good! It’s based on a solid piece of (japanese) social criticism with a typical good boy sarariman being treated like a worthless object by his corrupt bosses and deciding to throw in with a crew of mercenaries/pirates because they put a higher premium on personal loyalty and enjoying life as much as you can.
Yes, it’s violent and can get pretty dark, but it’s also funny, smart and well-written and looks gorgeous, if I remember correctly.
    Plus it’s short!

Only if you call 24 episodes short. To me, it’s a pretty standard length.

Heh. It is a series that I’ve long known about, but just never researched on my own.

24 episodes… Was it really? Damn, you’re right! Sorry, it’s been quite a while since I saw it and for some reason I seem to remember it being, or feeling (?) on the short side. The OVA is more recent and perhaps I simply, retroactively, applied the impression of shortness from that to the series as a whole…? My brain is a mystery. Baka dakara.

  3. The manga is also great. 9 volumes and counting, but dear lord it really is one of my favorites. I saw the anime first, but still lover reading the manga afterwards. I’m not as into anime nearly as much as I was in the late 90’s early or the early aughts, but BL reminded me that even when a lot of anime are pandering as all hell, there are still a few that are well worth it.

Great action, great character work, great atmosphere. BL has it all.
