UQ Holder Chapter 77 Manga Review (Is a retcon coming on, or another timeline?)

ユーキューホルダー! Manga Review
UQ Holder Chapter 77

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

UQ Holder Chapter 77Yukihime identifies the large woman as Dana Ananga Jagannatha, whom Fate knows as the Witch of the Rift, a noble (aristocrat). He asks why one such as her is on the human world since they have no interest in humanity. When Touta asks what nobles are, she says that they are fake vampires and that nobles are the true, shinso vampires (High Daylight Walkers). Dana doesn’t like being compared to nobles, who’ve mostly become living corpses since they’ve lost interest in everything.

Yukihime asks why Dana is there, so Dana says that it is her (Eva). She notes Yukihime’s chest and decides to make it bigger. Touta says he’s not interested in that, so Dana makes them bigger and bigger. Fate is astonished at how Dana is not stopped by Yukihime’s (Eva’s) barriers and forces new illusions on Eva. Eva is forced to return to her true form.

Dana asks why Touta wants to get stronger. He says it is to defeat Fate. The answer amuses Dana, but she then gets serious and says that it isn’t possible for a knockoff like Touta. Touta is initially dejected by this, but as he starts his comeback, Dana stabs him with her finger, killing him.

Touta wakes in a nice bed in an unknown castle. Touta cannot see outside the castle windows, but he sees a young girl hurrying away. Touta pursues but stops and hides in fear when a large, magical beast walks by. After it walks away, Touta makes his way out to a large platform apparently in the sky. He finds the girl at the far end of the platform. In a foreign language, she asks who Touta is and if the old hag brought him there too. He asks if she’s Yukihime.

Thoughts/Review:

Dana. I don’t mind the fact that we are introducing a new, shinso vampire here. There had been an indication in Negima that Eva wasn’t the only High Daylight Walker/shinso vampire. Negi had stated once that shinso vampires were created via magic, not through the normal vampire means.

So Dana is a member of this aristocrat (or “noble” as it is being called now for some reason), shinso vampire race. They are very powerful, immortal, and I guess they feast on the living if they are vampires.

What bothered me is that this chapter appears takes Eva down to “fake” level. Throughout Negima, Eva was the most notorious shinso vampire and High Daylight Walker. She had a massive bounty on her head. She had incredible powers, both magical, physical, and vampiric. Now, Eva’s saying, “Yeah, we are fake vampires and Dana is the real thing.”

So, we are either about to get a retcon of Eva, or this is another example of how we’ve shifted timelines. Assuming the retcon route, Akamatsu-sensei will have to make it that Eva was trained by Dana on how to survive her conversion, then when Eva set out, she took on the title of High Daylight Walker/shinso vampire even though she wasn’t a real one.

UQ Holder Chapter 77

(And yes, it is a retcon as far as I’m concerned since Eva was made a vampire by the Lifemaker, and Negi identified shinso vampires as ones created in the way Eva was, via magic.)

So, is this place that Touta woke up in Lebenschilt Castle? It is very similar to the castle that Eva “packed up” and placed into a diorama sphere. There are some minor differences from what little we saw, but Eva could have made some modifications later…or we are in a different timeline and this is how the castle looked in this parallel universe.

That leads me to the next question — did Dana actually send Touta to the past?

I suspect not. Dana is mega powerful, and assuming that Eva learned magic and the like from Dana, then the phantasmagoria powers that Eva had (whereby Eva forced Setsuna into this realm; whereby faux-Eva in the scroll forced Negi into for his Magia Erebea training) likely came from Dana. The fact that Touta couldn’t see out of the castle windows could suggest that he’s not in a real place.

So I suspect that Touta is in a phantasmagoria realm created by Dana, depicting Eva sometime after her conversion (note that there’s no Chachazero, but she’s wearing the rags she wore when she first got Chachazero).  The purpose of this will be to cause Touta to understand the hardships that Eva went through, why she created Magia Erebea, etc. In understanding Eva, Touta may understand himself better.

Also, this may be a way to train Touta in how to use his own Magia Erebea by seeing Eva at the beginning when she created the technique.

As to the magical beast, if we are in a phantasmagoria, then it could be a representation of Magia Erebea. Then again, this castle could be in the Magic World, or the Vampire Realm, or something, in which case this may just be a vicious, magical monster.

UQ Holder Chapter 77

Man, I do hope we get to see Eva’s past explored, INCLUDING Chachazero’s creation. Seriously, if Akamatsu-sensei does this, and doesn’t rush it for the sake of rushing it (’cause this current arc has been as random as heck, apparently speeding to a major tournament if things are to be believed), he’ll buy a lot of love from me. 🙂

As to Dana as a character, she is amusing, even if the “make the breast bigger” joke was already done twice before in Negima. The way she easily handled Eva even gave Fate pause, and no doubt, Dana could spank Fate based on the little we saw of her here.

Dana also seems to know about Touta for some reason by identifying him as a knockoff. That brings up the question, “What is she doing here?”

So while I smell retcon coming, I also think the retcon could be done in a way that makes me OK with it. I just hope that Akamatsu-sensei’s constant efforts of late to add random events doesn’t continue and ruin what could be a good sub-arc.

(Oh…looks like no chapter next week…bummer. And bloody Crunchyroll STILL hasn’t uploaded the missing page from last week’s chapter. 😡 )

  2. Teenryu says:

I actually don’t think its a retcon, but more of a revealing. While Negi said Shinso vampires were created via magic, he had no real knowledge of the original, true vampires. In a sense, a Shinso vampire birthed from “magic” wouldn’t be the same as a natural born, true Shinso vampire, despite both of them being real. In my gathering, I’d say we’re looking at the level Above Eva, as noble vampires are something of a entirely different level. This also brings forth the question to how many planets/worlds we have in this series, and how large the scale is going to be. With this, it makes me think “well that makes lifemaker not seem to be the strongest, but one of many “gods” “. We have the demon world which is all but confirmed, a possible world where the Noble vampires reside, earth, and the magical world. Not to mention I vaguely remember (because of a friend reminding me) of some talk of “the age of gods” in Negima once, which speculates that in UQ holder we might be getting more than we expected.. Who is the “lifemaker” equivalent for the demon world and vampire world? We also might be meeting a holder from dana’s world possibly. In essence to me I think it’s not a retcon, but more of filling the holes left from negima that he couldn’t fill.

    • Seimei says:

In fact I think Negi was right on Shinso but in the case of Eva, she’s a dud Shinso. Remember that she is the result of an experiment, which says experience says risk of total or partial failure. Eva herself in Negima said at the beginning, she suffered the same weaknesses as the other vampires. Yet Shinso are supposed to be immune.
I think we have a special ritual to create a Shinso and the life-maker tried to use a different method but failed. Later, Eva created the magia-Erbea that gave her the same powers as the Shinso (which would explain also why Tota is also immune to vampiric weaknesses (especially the sun), while he is clearly NOT a Shinso.

And finally for me, the wolf is NOT a manifestation of the M-E. Tota thinks even recognize, a monster of the “cave” of UQ headquarters.

I think the term “vampire world” is an allegorical signifiat term “company of vampires,” even though that would be interesting if the vampires have their own planet, such as Mazoku.

For the “gods” I think there are still well over. Not forgetting mythological Gods (Olympians Asgardian, amatsu-kami, ect) did not because we do not see them that they do not exist in the akamatsuvers. But yes, I too would like to see the original vampire, the Source, although I think I dream lol.

Astro: concretely the next chapter will be released on May 1st. So in 10 days, not in two weeks. I think here cool because it allows Akamatsu to let the golden-week without penalizing readers. ^^

It is arguably the next chapters will now be released on Friday or Saturday.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Astro: concretely the next chapter will be released on May 1st. So in 10 days, not in two weeks.

Where’d you see that? The magazine isn’t being published next Wednesday (in Japan), but its publishing schedule should still remain the same. It always has done so in the past.

        • chaosprophet says:

http://www.shonenmagazine.com/smaga/index.html At the bottom here says it’s on 1st of May. And yeah that’s strange, but maybe they’re using this opportunity after the double issue break to change the day the magazine comes out from Wednesday to Friday? We have to see later if it will be jut next issue or that will be the new norm, in which case the spoilers and actual chapter release schedule will change.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, I hadn’t seen the raw at that point. And I believe Crunchyroll has been updated to say they are publishing the chapter the evening of the 30th, which is the 1st in Japan.

And Crunchyroll STILL hasn’t loaded the missing page. *_*

        • Seimei says:

I think you already know now, other regulars n log you have said, but the release date is on the last page and it does point to May 1st.^^

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I actually don’t think its a retcon, but more of a revealing.

Sometimes, you can have a “revealing” element that is still a mind retcon. We’ll see how this goes.

With this, it makes me think “well that makes lifemaker not seem to be the strongest, but one of many “gods” “.

Well, the Lifemaker is a kind of deity considering the Magic World.

In essence to me I think it’s not a retcon, but more of filling the holes left from negima that he couldn’t fill.

You may be right. I’m seriously wanting Eva’s background explored, but I guess I’m a bit tetchy if I sense retconning.

  3. NML says:

I assume that true shinso vampires are created by other shinso vampires and Eva is a fake because she was created by an individual(not sure what to classify the Lifemaker as).

I don’t consider this a retcon, just a reveal. We never met other vampires in Negima so Akamatsu didn’t get a chance to establish that they would consider Eva lesser than them but it makes sense.
She was of different origin to them which. It’s like nobles of the real world, we’re all humans but they look down “commoners” because they weren’t born to ther nobles. I assume the power difference is because something has happened to Eva’s powers.

I feel like this timeline is the one where Asuna didn’t return but nothing before her going to sleep is changed.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I assume that true shinso vampires are created by other shinso vampires and Eva is a fake because she was created by an individual(not sure what to classify the Lifemaker as).

      I can buy that.

I don’t consider this a retcon, just a reveal. We never met other vampires in Negima so Akamatsu didn’t get a chance to establish that they would consider Eva lesser than them but it makes sense.

It is true that vampires have been unexplored to date. I’m probably being too tetchy.

      • NML says:

Also, the last page of the chapter says that the next chapter will be published on May 1st, which is interesting because it’s usually Tuesday.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

Wednesday in Japan. I hadn’t seen the raw until now. Interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye open for spoilers sooner than I thought. I wonder if it will come out on May 1 on Crunchyroll.

  4. NT says:

Damn…. First the Nagi-Possessed Lifemaker puts Eva (and rakan) into a Binding spell with little to no effort, and now this Lady here messes with her (taking into account that Eva is severely weakened right now for some reason so she’s not at full 100%), by inflating her boobs and forcing her to revert to her true form….

Seeing all this, makes me wonder how in the hell Nagi even managed to beat the MotB..

Anyway, I’ll comment on the Beast. The Beast looks very surprisingly like a Magia Erebea type beast, just looks at the details of it.

So, the possible phantasmagoria idea may be correct, since it looks like This Eva seemed to be trapped too.

And she’;s speaking french… what the?

    • chaosprophet says:

When talking about Eva’s origin in Negima, the 100 years war was mentioned. With this, it’s likely she was originally from France.

      • NT says:

Actually, around that time, there was an alliance between Scotland and France called that Auld Alliance, which was formed in 1295 and went on till the 1560 Edinburgh Treaty.

Within that time the Hundred years war (1337 to 1453) happened, and the alliance was one of the most important groups at the time.
With that, it was not far fetched to figure that Scottish people knew/spoke French and visa versa.

Eva’s profile states that she was born During the Hundred Years War, and has a british accent, and was born either in England or Scotland. Most likely scotland. It might be more apparent when you try to look at the design of her castle to see that what it’s origins were.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      First the Nagi-Possessed Lifemaker…

Funny how the Lifemaker possesses people while retaining their female body. 😉

So, the possible phantasmagoria idea may be correct, since it looks like This Eva seemed to be trapped too.

I think the phantasmagoria is going to show Eva’s past. I don’t think Eva is actually there.

And she’;s speaking french… what the?

      Possibly.

  5. dominic says:

    Could hoody maybe chao lingsei

  6. Gore17 says:

Or a simpler possibility: the “noble” Shinso Vampires were born from a particular spell they cast on themselves, becoming the first vampires through their own power. Evangeline, being made by someone else, and using a different, possibly inferior spell(s), is not considered “noble” as a result.

Aka, these are the originals, and Evangeline, as far as most of them are concerned, is a mere knock-off.

  7. shadowofthevoid says:

What page is missing from last chapter at Crunchy Roll, to be exact? I’ve seen the same amount of pages on CR that I’ve seen elsewhere, including the raw at Sen Manga.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      https://twitter.com/AstroNerdBoy/status/590686570858020864

I posted it with my complaint to Crunchyroll.

      • shadowofthevoid says:

Wow. I can’t believe I missed that when comparing the raw to the English versions I’ve seen. I really am going blind. :/

But yeah, I can’t find an English version of that page. Maybe all the scanlators dropped UQ Holder and all the, well, let’s call them “unofficial” manga websites, are copying what CR publishes. I guess until they get it in gear and fix it I’ll have to use my limited and very terrible Japanese “skills” to try to get the gist of what they’re saying. I’ll probably need my kanji dictionary…

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I don’t think any scanlation site is doing it.

Regarding the missing page, from the previous chapter comments by enjinks.

I read the missing page on the raw version, and basically, Kuro says Touta can”t use Negi’s finishing move since he can’t use magic, which Morborgran confirm.

  8. Lakshmi says:

I particularly hated this chapter, for various reasons: first of all, Eva’s character “nerfing”. In negima everyone loved her for her charisma derived from secular experience which granted her an incredible power (even in UQ holder, in the flashbacks, negi still called her his master after mastering himself magia erebea). Now she is just made ridiculous, that boobs fan service also being totally out of place (it’s too much and too sudden since we haven’t had such ecchi stuff for a long time in the story). I’m ok with introducing a stronger character than Eva, but as you said things are going just too random. Another thing is how touta speaks (as of late): it’s completely different from the first chapters of UQ holder and makes his character inconsistent, I’d say irritating. The only thing I agree with what he said is that everyone he meets wants to kill him. I can’t see how that can be different, he is so dull. The only interesting new character in this manga so far has been Santa; kirie is just too overpowered and convenient, kuroumaru is rather generic and too similar to setzuna to be unique, Karin just stands there doin nothing, fate is just “yes I wanted you tota and I almost killed you to have you but now I don’t want you anymore” and touta’s friends are just forgotten in limbo since no one cares about them. The others are ok, but nothing too memorable.

    • Seimei says:

“Another thing is how touta speaks (as of late): it’s completely different from the first chapters of UQ holder and makes his character inconsistent, I’d say irritating.”

It was called mature eh? I remember that in the early chapters Tota was a “happy go lucky” full of dreams (why much hated). Now he learned that he was a clone and it is an existential crisis. This is chengement NOR-MAL! Lol Inconsistent? As the Character of most real human beings on the planet! We never remains the same in the Vaie then imagine life in fiction lol. And do not tell me “in negima was different.” This is false Negi has almost followed the same psychological parcour as Tota. Personally I do not recognize the Negi of Volume 1 to Volume 6 and I do not recognize the Negi of book 6 in Volume 19. I do not recognize non-plus Negi of volume 20 to volume 35. Yet between each psychological changes little time has elapsed.

About Eva I have to remember that even in Negima she was often ridiculed, it is not new. Al, Asuna and even Chachamaru have made a specialty of embarrass her and make her lose her aristocratic phlegm we love all.^^.
Personaly, if I did not in fact love breast enlargement this is true. In contrast, I however much love how Dana trolled Eva. This is reminded me Albireo (and I am confident that him and Dana know each other very goods . ^^)

      • Lakshmi says:

Well maybe you’re right on tota, inconsistent was a wrong word. What i actually meant was that its progression (can it be called that?) is too artificial in the flow of the story, while in negima it felt a lot more natural, mainly because of too much random things and “reasons” (see previous chapter review).

        • Seimei says:

Except that talking about “natural” progression is nonsense because NOTHING in a story is “natural”. Before you call me “captain obvious” let me clarify my thinking.

What I mean is that for you, progression Negima you seem more natural than UQ but for me, for example, is the opposite. Until the arc-mundus magicus Negima was composed of arcs without large clear links between them where characters “out of nothing” (the band at Chigusa with Fate, and Tsukuyomi kotaro during kyoto arc are a good example ). Here with UQ I rather feel that the author much better know where he vat and from the start, not to Volume 18. If the characters seem to come from nowhere that’s normal in almost all manga s’ is the same deal, if we had to settle the 10 characters that you see at the beginning of the story without inventing new ones, believe me, the stories would vites boring.

All that to say that everyone in his vision of what “natural progression” and no fundamental right or wrong about it. So talk about natural progression as a universal law to respect seems incongruous.

I will also add that, ironically, the fact that the characters “appear from nowhere”, from my point of view, only makes the story more “natural” precisely. When you get up in the morning you do not necessarily know in advance all the people you will meet. Well here is the same property. Of course, it’s better to introduires them for prepare the readers, it’s true, but it is not because sensei does not, that he commits an unforgivable heresy!

    • OverMaster says:

“we haven’t had such ecchi stuff for a long time in the story”

Not that much, really; even if the manga’s odd pace would suggest otherwise, the chapter set at the baths wasn’t that long ago.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I particularly hated this chapter, for various reasons: first of all, Eva’s character “nerfing”.

Yeah, I think that’s my problem — Eva is getting nerfed. She was already being nerfed to a degree in this series, but this chapter makes it clear.

Still, I mostly agree with your assessment of the series. I do like Kuroumaru and Karin though as well as Santa.

  9. Alliriyan says:

Loving the atmospheric castle. Badass chimera, hope we see more of it. Touta starting to feel gloomy about being killed by everyone he meets gave me feels because it’s so true. And world-building! Yay! Starting to get the sense of a magical environment that all the modern stuff had dampened.

As a note, Eva speaking French (if Touta was right) could be a reference to French being the commerce and law and courtly language of Scotland etc when she was young, though I haven’t checked the dates. (He’s doing his research?)

Dana is definitely a 3d model he just adjusts the face for, so I’m trying to spot how many other characters that’s used on now. But I like how Akamatsu is fighting against his sameface and exploring artistically.

I think although the crunchyroll viewer is clumsy, I really appreciate being able to zoom in on the best-quality art – feel like a lot of detail could be lost at tankouben size for this series. Glad it’s simulpub.

We just need Dana to put some illusions on Kuroumaru for a girl-path preview….I think he’d have a breakdown.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Really? I was unaware of that.

I’m glad it is a simulpub and that the Twins are doing it (even if they did get angry with me when I was pointing out an Aliens reference to them). I like that on my 27″ monitors, the manga looks great when on full screen (sucks on regular screen as it is rather small). I hate that Crunchyroll still hasn’t uploaded that missing page.

  10. Leonard E. Norwood Jr. says:

Been some time since I’ve seen such a place again at the last few pages. So this is where Touta can finally start to learn how to do some proper training and understand more about Eva herself so he can find some way to effectively use Magia Erebea, since he hasn’t been able to get that ability in check and in control yet. Touta barely even did anything with training, it has been one thing after another, which gets him beatdown even more, isn’t the beatdown he got from Mana enough? Maybe enough to know that he’s not ready for A-rank fights which he tried to do, but come on.

Still why Dana, A true Shinso vampire has in interest for Touta? I’m not surprised that these kinds of vampire for some, act no better than how some witches act, despite the Shinso having nothing to do with human affairs, because they lived so long and seen a repeat of things happening, for them to even bother with anything with the world itself. But enough about them, this should benefit Touta in a way, despite being killed and abducted, and yeah I will always have my gripes about some of these characters’ method of training however harsh and brutal it is, but let it be said that there has always been room for improvement for all characters, especially Touta.

Reading some manga, there tends to be a training method that does reach, at times, to dangerous levels to the point that the person being trained may die, a high risk on the chance and faith that they will pull through and gain the knowledge and power behind this brutal training. I will admit there are some gripes from me behind this, even though the character will become stronger this way. And I do know the reason why, all having something to do with being able to get past their fears and doubts long enough to give everything in their ability to survive the training and obtain what they’ve had a goal on to obtain.

There’s no problem at all to becoming stronger somehow, there’s a way, and you have to keep it up with whatever that needs to be worked on.

Anyway, Touta is going to have to take the time to grasp these things and learn about Eva, himself, and his family since there hasn’t been any more words about his family, and why he should keep it in mind at all times.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Still why Dana, A true Shinso vampire has in interest for Touta?

      A good question.

Hopefully, that’s what we’ll get and not some new, random stuff.

  11. dominic says:

    Could it be the roll

  12. dominic says:

Here is a funny comment: the blond vampire boy is dianas true form.

  13. magine says:

    What a chapter…

The breast of Evangeline… ugh… First Dana removes the nickname “kitty” to Albireo and after she does to increase the breast and the body, damn it! -_- If this was an anime, my eyes would be as big as saucers. like Chisame to see it.

If Karin had been there, she had been transformed in a super Saiyan goddess mode to see Dana doing those things to Evangeline. Lol what a pity.

Evangeline…So strong in Negima and so weak here… why… Is this maybe because of “love” that she is so weak?

Well, Isn’t Evangeline really a shinso? I thought that she was because she have no weakness of a normal vampire.

“And besides, most of them have lived so long, they’ve lost all interest in everything, they’re basically living corpses” lol Who knows so many vampires there.

I was surprised at the end of the chapter! I’ve been waiting so long to know about the Evangeline’s past… Maybe Touta knows the “dark evangel” that she was once.

“So I suspect that Touta is in a phantasmagoria realm created by Dana, depicting Eva sometime after her conversion”

I also think the same thing.

PS: I wonder if the Lifemaker is more powerful than Dana… And if she knows about the Lifemaker… I’m looking forward the next chapter 🙂

    • Seimei says:

I gave my theory on why Eva “was a Shinso without actually being a Shinso” above (my first comment on this topic) if it interress you. ^^

And me too would like even a clash between a Shinso 4000 years (Dana or other) and the life-maker. That would be an DE-MEN-TIAL showdown! ^^

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

If Karin had been there, she had been transformed in a super Saiyan goddess mode to see Dana doing those things to Evangeline. Lol what a pity.

Now we know why she’s not there.

Evangeline…So strong in Negima and so weak here… why… Is this maybe because of “love” that she is so weak?

If I had to guess, her power level in Negima doesn’t make for an interesting character in UQ Holder. So to make it so that she’s not the OP character she was in Negima, things have to be done to make her weaker, or appear to not be as strong.

  14. chaosprophet says:

Others already said something similar, but I also agree that Negi, while knowledgeable, only knew about the vampires that would roam the world. While this chapter seems to indicate that the true shinso lives somewhere else not interfering with humans, and so likely only known by a little.

  15. Rob C. says:

I have agree with everyone. This doesn’t necessary mean there a retrocon of the storyline. This maybe facts that weren’t known to the people in the previous series who are in this one as well. Eve may well have been most powerful shinso vampire known to people of Earth, but doesn’t mean there were others not advertising their presence. Dana presence maybe tipping point for touta. Lifemaker was at least from what i can gleam from previous manga, human turn wizard/god. However, it’s hard to say, but it doesn’t mean the Lifemaker was most powerful being. Just one people know of in close circles, made known in magical world’s two big crisis.

As to this next leg of the Touta’s journey. I’m okay with the changes introduced here.
The world Touta wokeup too could very well be a artificial one made by Dana’s magic, and Pre-Yukihime Eve could be a magical construction.

I am more than willing to give Akamatsu-sensei a chance to tell his tale, that this was very well planned sequel to his series. It’s not easy when your dealing with different times, events which were established in the past. Mistakes are sure to be made, but i think you need give Akamatsu-sensei some room to maneuver before ripping up what he’s done so far. After all it be know fun if we know everything you know.

I don’t think it was well planned out, unlike Negima. However, I will continue to read UQ Holder because I do want to know more about Eva (as an example).

      • Seimei says:

I’ve said it before but I’m not in agreement. For me Akamatsu well better now planning his story at the time of the beginning of Negima. Negima to the arch-Mundus magicus was a sequence of edges without trops links between them (and do not tell me it was the same in UQ, the only bow that is not related with the overall plot for me was the bow Santa / Sayako. And again! During this arc we had information on Kuromaru and Touta (hacking Santa secret files UQ).

Here is a small example: I do not know if you noticed but so far the numbers are assigned numbers in order of arrival in the organization (this is a colleague from the Akamatsu French forum where I am registered that noticed that): Ikku is number 10 and said to be the newest member before the arrival of Touta and kuromaru. Kuromaru Santa is 11 and number (the newest) is the number 12. Logic not? So … Why Tota has the number 7?

Is just one example. Also now it seems that we have definitely ceased to make “small missions to the Fairy Tail-like”. The story is well and truly underway now.^^

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

There was a lot of foreshadowing in Negima. There’s really no foreshadowing to speak of in UQ Holder.

          • cold_menthol says:

It’s true there are too many “out of the blue” moments, but saying no foreshadowing at all is a bit harsh, I think. I’d say the existing foreshadowing in UQH! are all related to Negima’s characters (Nagi, Negi, MOTB, Al, etc). Maybe Touta is the only UQH! original character who has a decent amount of foreshadowing.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, that’s the problem. The Negima foreshadowing for story elements that were never realized is the only things being carried forward. So if one hasn’t read Negima, then I suspect they don’t see any foreshadowing.

  16. Setsuyume Edenfault says:

    Hmmm…

If shinsos are made vampire via magic (like Eva was), that means they were born as a diferente race (again, like Eva was).

Now, if 2 magic vampires of the same (former) race have a child, that child might be a Shinso from birth? Among the shinso shadows some even have demonic horns. Then we have Dana?

Anyway, nice chapter. Hopefully, Eva’s past now! I always wondered who was her teacher.

  17. chaosprophet says:

If this follow some usual vampire concepts on Japanese media, then it’s something like one or a few original shinso that at some point are born in the world, and only descendents of them are true shinso vampires. If someone like Eva is created by magic and have a child, even with a similar being than her, the child wouldn’t really be an original shinso.

In any way, those aren’t rules set in stone and we need to wait and see for more information in how they work in UQ universe.

  18. mattcgw says:

This chapter causes me great alarm, it was always possible that negi simply mis-identified Eva and that akamatsu had simply not created the concept of the lifemaker, thus eva’s connection to her. However, it would seem more possible that Eva was a Homunculus, which according to the text I read, don’t live beyond the age of 10; which was the age Eva was “turned” and considering Eva built up the capacity for magic, would indicate she’s no Quasi-demi-god. Unlike the lifemaker’s other two relatives Atemaru who founded the patico system after the age of gods and the Gravekeeper, who maybe continually shifting time to extend her life.

The alarm comes as the thousand+ true shinso vampire’s make their appearance in UQ, foreshadowed to be future bosses, that would undoubtedly be stronger than Eva at her peak. Do not meddle in human affairs, causing the averruncus ceiling/raken threshold to be a basic requirement to a very much less exclusive club, that until now only held 11 members tops.

Destroying the power curve in which Eva was one of strongest, by a bunch shinso, who most likely reside in some pocket dimension, and were likely scapegoating Eva for any of their dirty work. Until Eva was introduced to Dana and realised she was lifemaker kin, and didn’t want a suicidal conflict with her.

Also an; issue is that Dana’s last name, jagannath/a apparently means lord of the universe in the Hindu Religion, and has no Shinto/Buddhist disambiguation. Dana is suppose to be the most human of the shinso, (which usually means the weakest, if UQ’s age Equals power mantra applies). Although I’m strongly inclined to believe the name is German and the twin’s are gravely mistaken or akamatsu. While the name has a nath when pronounced in English, in other’s it’s nate.
Also Dana’s Caucasian. Also the German for Vampire is Nacht der untoten, which also other meanings, it could fit considering Graff was a very powerful Daemon, point being, it would make a lot more sense for Dana to be German

It also has the Very unfortunate implication, that either some lackey’s of the shinso were involved with the murder of touta’s “parent’s” or involved in touta’s creation or an entirely new fraction of an equally OP magical race (please don’t be the cliche werewolves VS Vampires) murdered Touta’s “parent’s”.

About Eva speaking French, it could be akamatsu retconning Eva’s country of origin (which I was inclined to say Ireland when her name was first shown, while taking the role of Aryan race gaijin) or far more likely speaking the language of the aristocracy and trade which was French, across Europe proper, while English only became dominant 250-200 years ago with increase trading with America primarily, while the Britannian empire, was a secondary cause, (my country really did not get on with the French). However, the negima lexicon stated that translation magic is quite basic, but since touta’s interaction with magic produces explosive results, it would indicate that Eva’s base language is French, instead of Gaelic or English, thus putting further evidence into a change in eva’s country of origin.

The only mark against this I could discern is Eva added K. McDowell, to fit in, amongst Irish immigrants to America or Canada

Update: If google translate and negima wikia is to be believed, Eva’s last name does contain the Mac, エヴァンジェリン・A・K・マクダウェル, the difference is this katakana, ダ which gives her Mac, while alternative that gives her the Mc ド, but it’s currently translated as Mc. If someone could check the Japanese concerning eva’s name it would be a great boon.

But the MAC put into (stronger) connection with clan Macdowell, which during the 14th century ruled one of the smaller parts of Scotland, also having root’s dating to before the death of Christ, but considering the amount of castle’s clan MacDowell had by the time of Eva vampirism, she simply may not of known what part of Scotland she was in. but does her knowledge and predominant use of Latin, since her scroll used, instead of what is portrayed in the series of Ancient Greek being more potent.

Typically the longer the line of magister blood is the stronger the mages are produced each generation, “fate/zero”

Considering this, Dana’s influence on Eva may simply be, helping pass her then current ceiling of power, by teaching her ancient Greek and more advance spell theorem.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, we don’t know she was speaking French. Touta seems to think she was, but he’s not sure. She may have been, and if she were Scottish, apparently, her speaking French would be OK.

If someone could check the Japanese concerning eva’s name it would be a great boon.

It is McDowell all the way back to volume 1 of Negima (I own all the Japanese tankoubons).

  19. mattcgw says:

With the introduction of the Exclusive realms for singular magical races by Akamatsu, I do hope against all. He doesn’t use this a basis of pulling randomly stronger people than the last, EG all the shinso vampire’s are defeated UQ is suddenly pulled into the realm of gods and that the lifemaker was banished for being rebellious, and the gods in that realm that are 10 times than the shinso.

    • Seimei says:

I think you’ll find MUCH too far (not of course a possibility of the occurrence of the realm of the gods and the gods themselves although, it would please me, I think akamatsu keep the life-maker as the main antagonniste . As against it may well mention the gods (in the sense “not to show them, but prove they exist”) would do to let the opportunity for fans to have fun with it later hehehe The number of explosive fanfics I could do with this info on the cosmogone akamatsuvers! I enjoy beforehand lol I always worship the gods and mythologies, even those fabrications as Tolkien or Warcraft. I then, the appearance of the gods would please me.). I would add that for me, the life-maker is a human deified, he is not a god from the beginning.

Not where you will look far is when you say that Eva would be an homunculus or that the Shinso could have created Tota and murdered his parents. I know you have a panic fear of dévelloppements like the “4th World War shinobi in Naruto” (and even, in Narutovers these development did not fit because the base, narutovers was not supposed to be a univer “dragon-ball- like “. However I think akamatsuvers property lends better to these kind of explosives and epic stories there. Also, it is normal to increase the power scale in UQ compared to that of Negima. Just the life -maker was presumed, even in the time of Negima for to be minimim, 10 times stronger than Rakan. So it was obvious that the “Rakan wall” would be exploded in UQ). But even if it’s not me bored (and it would almost please me in fact lol), I know you made part of “anti Dragon ball” lol.

Anyway CALM YOURSELF, It is not worth to extrapolate this point now to something that could be explained in Chapter 150. You have 70% of chence mislead you there.

But I am astray. What I mean is that for me, there are only two possible, assassins for Tota parents: Fate or life-maker. It’s not worth looking farther away.

And about the creator of Tota, it is almost certain that this is Fate.

I think that Shinso will resemble those of vampire knight. As Dana describe them “beings so powerful and so old that nothing interressent them”. At most, they may be willing to passively help UQ Holder, ala-alba or life-maker but I think that no of them will want to be directly involved.

Let alone be major antagonists (“all Shinso are defeated by UQ Holder.” Uh you feel good? What I understand from them is that it is a disparate society, no a unified community. If ever one or two of them were major antagonnistes (which is far from certain), others would likely allies and others would be neutral. it’s not in saint-seiya well armed with divine Reņģes and clearly decided camps in kind “we will exterminate all Shinso.” Lol you confuse UQ and immortal hunters there.

Calm down, I repeat, calm down!

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Akamatsu-sensei already has a track record of doing this. 😉

  20. mattcgw says:

Also the hundred year’s war was 1337-1453, karin was to be burned in 1492, however, how long she had her blessing for and until this date is unknown.
Also pertaining to this date is the signing of the Peace of Étaples, in which the english ended conflict and ceded all French territory except Calais to the french.

As to when eva was vamped, I;d say it was most likely 1420-40, i doubt she was born in the 14th century, since she was about 600 hundred in ’03 negima

  21. dominic says:

Astro. What i mean was could it be that the palace is in the magia erebea scroll

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’m pretty sure Touta isn’t in Eva’s scroll. I suspect that Dana created a phantasmagoria realm from a time when Eva was with Dana so that Touta could possibly learn about ME.

  22. dominic says:

Did somebody noticed that touta eye is healed

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, if he’s in a phantasmagoria, then his eye isn’t healed. It is just that in this place, he can use it again, much as Eva could use her full powers in the phantasmagoria even though the curse was still in effect on her physical body.

  23. Farray says:

I think I mentioned once in one of the Fate/Zero reviews that I always thought Eva being a shinso could be a nod to Type-Moon’s Tsukihime.

In the Nasuverse, shinsos (True Ancestors) were extensions of nature. The world needed a defense mechanism and Crimson Moon, also known as Type-Moon, offered his help and he was used as the template for the shinsos. They were powerful, almost perfect beings, who became a part of Gaia’s Counter Force… with only one flaw. They just had a natural desire to drink blood and most of the shinsos used most of their power to suppress that desire. Those who could no longer suppress themselves either fell into an eternal sleep or gave in to their desire and turned into Fallen Ancestors, also known as Demon Lords. Most shinsos went into hiding and their numbers slowly dwindled.

The humans that were kept as prey for the shinsos would turn into shitos (Dead Apostles), with a similar desire for blood, though they needed the blood to actually survive. The ones who became stronger and then escaped (and eventually created even more vampires) were later known as the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors. Well, there are also humans, who used magic (or at least tried to) to turn themselves into Dead Apostles, like Emiya Kiritsugu’s father. Or turn others into Dead Apostles. For some magi, being a vampire was just convenient, as they became immortal to continue their research.

If I used Nasuverse terms, I’d call Eva a shito and not a shinso. And Touta, who was turned by Eva, would also be a shito, albeit a very strange one for having no magical potential at all. But Dana sounds more like a shinso to me. Then again, I never see any vampires actually having vampire-like characteristics like the whole bloodsucking impulse, and we still don’t know what the Lifemaker is, so Akamatsu’s and Nasu’s vampires are probably nothing alike…

Also, I’m quite unhappy about Eva being ridiculed like that, as if she were an amateur. All this time in Negima and in UQH she was portrayed as that incredibly powerful sorceress that Negi and Asuna could barely scratch, and then this happens. Yes, Al also made fun of her quite a lot and Asuna also kicked her in the face a few times, but she was never at full power at that time. Neither is she now, apparently, but it’s not like she is under another “school hell” curse, is she?

Well, here’s to hope we at least get some long awaited backstory for Eva. I’m tired of seeing all those teasers.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Considering the popularity of Type-Moon stuff, Akamatsu-sensei may be taking a cue from them.

I don’t think Eva is under a curse. The nerfing of Eva in this chapter just is so not cool. 🙁

      Ditto.

      • NML says:

I wouldn’t consider Eva to have been nerfed.
She didn’t even try to attack Dana, we know they go way back, probably the longest relationship that Eva has.

I got the impression that Eva might owe a lot to Dana(maybe she took Eva under her wing and taught her a lot about being a vampire) and she doesn’t feel comfortable attacking her.

Maybe their relationship is similar to Eva and Negi but with Eva in the student roll. Eva’s training was really brutal but Negi still grew to love her( I’m using love in a platonic way…but who knows :L ).

        • cold_menthol says:

That can still be considered as being nerfed. Hierarchically (is that even a legit word?), only MotB and perhaps Nagi are higher than Eva in Negima (put aside Al the troll for now). Here in UQH, let alone Dana, she’s even forced to use ME against Fate.

          • NML says:

We didn’t meet any other shinso vampires in Negima so Akamatsu couldn’t establish that Eva would be considered lesser.

Also it’s been hinted that something has happened to her power level(for want of a better phrase)

          • cold_menthol says:

Exactly. Eva is being nerfed by showing another, presumably stronger, shinso vampire.

Also it’s been hinted that something has happened to her power level(for want of a better phrase)

Doesn’t that also mean she’s being nerfed then?

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

Doesn’t that also mean she’s being nerfed then?

            That’s how I define nerfing. 😉

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

Here in UQH, let alone Dana, she’s even forced to use ME against Fate.

Yeah, that’s true. In the Kyoto arc of Negima, she didn’t need ME to force Fate to beat a hasty retreat.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I wouldn’t consider Eva to have been nerfed.

Well, there have been hints from the first chapter that she has been nerfed. This chapter seemed like icing on the cake.

Still, you may be right here.

          • NML says:

After reading other comments, I think I misunderstood the meaning of “nerfed”.
I do think Eva is weaker now but I think there’s an in-story reason, it was implied at the end of the Slums arc that her powers have diminished.
Also I assume Fate has become a lot stronger in the past 80 years, he was only 8 in Negima :/

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

I do think Eva is weaker now but I think there’s an in-story reason, it was implied at the end of the Slums arc that her powers have diminished.

That was phase 1 of her nerfing. Since it apparently wasn’t enough, it seems we are on round 2. 😉

    • Seimei says:

Uh, according to Eva herself is understood that Al is making fun of her before it is sealed in Mahora. It specifies that Rakan won parchein of the ME by cheating (which implies that it was done “roll in farrine” as we say in France, more simply, she made fooled. This is not very glorious and at the time she was not cursed. On the other hand when she spoke at the final battle on Inverse-March to the end of Negima, she was at full power as yet Rakan kept making fun of her (remember dous his masterful ‘go loli-grandma! ”

So I stand by what I said, troll Eva is an art that jokers of akamatsuvers have never private practice, whether or not weakened. ^^ If in addition we add the fact that Dana is a vampire of higher rank than Eva …

Aside from here I also thought, with the new information that we have, compared to Eva and Tota shito (dead apostles) of nasuverse. ^^

  24. NML says:

I guess we’ll probably run into the vampire kid from the UQ Holder colour spread soon because I believe he appears to be an aristocrat/noble.

I wonder under what circumstances a noble would work for a “fake”. Maybe Dana will order him to… unless Basago is the kid

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      Possibly.

      Well, there you go.

What the fu**?! Seriously? Why? In japan this is the May 1st ! Well then I guess people will translate “illegally” anyway, which chengera anything for us players but .. Whoa! Why such pausedans translations?

i wanted to say : “”what NOT change anything for us, readers”

“what NOT change anything for us readers”

But finally has no importence since apparently, NML had misread the release date lol. This is really May 1st, and even April 30th.^^

  26. cold_menthol says:

Backstory is (almost) always nice, especially if it’s the backstory of an important character. I hope it really turns out to be Eva’s backstory.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, that would be nice. If it happens, I’ve been waiting since Negima volume 3 to get it.

  27. NML says:

It’d be pretty cool if we got to see Eva meet Ala Rubra but I think that’s just wishful thinking on my part :/

  28. Seimei says:

new spoil for chap 78 astro?^^

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Nothing yet. Not surprising since the chapter is delayed two days. I’m thinking tomorrow maybe.
