ハヤテのごとく!/Hayate no Gotoku Manga
Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 509 Review
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
With Hina attempting to use luck against the unlucky Hayate, he smirks and reminds her that in normal Old Maid, the old maid (or joker) card is drawn by the unluckiest person. As such, he gloomily remarks on how he’s lost his passport, then draws the joker. Hina is astonished and asks if he lost it on purpose. He says he didn’t do it on purpose, but left it in his pocket in such a way that it might fall out, or not. The others are amazed at Hayate amplifying his bad luck to draw the joker.
Yukiji notices that along with the ¥150 million in cash, there’s a jewel. Hayate informs her that it is supplied by Chairman Kananiwa and is a King’s Jewel.
Kananiwa is up next and reminds Hayate that he’s not the only one with bad luck. Her bad luck was to tell them that her boyfriend since high school just broke up with her, thus she draws the joker. Yukiji is up next and her bad luck is having her parents saddle her with an ¥80 million debt. Izumi is up next, but since she’s a happy ojousama, there’s no way she’ll have bad luck and pull the joker. However, her bad luck is having Kotetsu as a brother, which allows her to draw the joker. Kayura doesn’t have bad luck, but can easily read Izumi and so pulls the card. Hina cites Yukiji as her bad luck and gets the joker back.
Hayate ups the bad luck ante and pulls the joker. Kananiwa does as well. Eventually, the others start falling out and after four hours and twelve minutes, it was down to Hina and Hayate. Hina knows that if she loses, Hayate won’t notice her feelings. She loses.
Thoughts/Review:
Har! I had a feeling that Hayate would win since he had success playing games. I didn’t expect it to be like this though.
It was humorous hearing some of the bad luck tales. I think Izumi’s had to be the funniest, since she cited having Kotetsu as a brother. Hina’s was also pretty amusing, citing Yukiji as her sister.
Although this has seemed the case for a while, I guess it is safe to say that Kananiwa has no relation to Dolly from Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, other than looks. I’d kinda hoped she might still be a Dryad.
So Hayate now has ¥150 million and a Kings Jewel. Now what?
I have this feeling that the manga will end fairly soon, possibly by end of year. I’ve remarked before on how this arc just doesn’t have the same forethought feeling as other arcs have and it just seemed to meander without purpose for a long time. Now that Hayate has ¥150 million, he can pay off his debt. With the King’s Jewel, he can open up the path for Nagi.
I hope I’m wrong, but the manga is on a three week break, no doubt so Hata-sensei can focus on his new manga. I think the new manga is going to be more interesting to Hata-sensei than Hayate the Combat Butler. That adds to my feeling that Hata-sensei will just close things down.
Well, I guess we’ll see what happens in three weeks.
Wow. I know lots of manga and anime wind up as video games, but I would have figured a dating sim was more likely.
Hayate no Gotoku 2015
I never played that game, but heh! I do know what you are saying.
I like Kananiwa, so I’m glad she’s not some obvious evil villain character like Dolly and is just apparently another scheming relative of Mikado’s.
By the way, why do you think Hayate would be interested in the King’s Jewel? Nagi’s definitely not interested in the Royal Garden, so I doubt that’s his reason.
I don’t think this manga is THAT ready to end just yet… definitely not by the end of the year.
He still has lots of plot bunnies to wrap up including Himegami’s involvement and what’s up with Hisui Hatsushiba and her battle maid, Yozora Housen.
Also, I wouldn’t be so quick to count Nagi out of this level 5 competition just yet just because Hayate says she’s sleeping it off and the narrator says the winner has been decided. Just remember that Mr. Narrator lied in the previous chapter. On that note, I wouldn’t count Hina out just yet as well. It might all be a red herring.
I don’t disagree there. Even if Kananiwa had been a Dryad, I wouldn’t have necessarily wanted her to be like Dolly. It would just add that extra mystical layer.
I’ve been rereading the manga, and my conclusion is that he wants to insure that Nagi gets her inheritance, no matter what. If he secures her financial future, then I think he’ll feel better about her, especially if he’s not there for her in the future (say because he dies or for some other reason is separated from her).
I’d like to think that, and it may be by next spring that he ends it, but considering how Negima just ended, and Hata-sensei is friends with Akamatsu-sensei, Hata-sensei might go, “You know, enough of this already. I’m just going to quickly wrap this up and move on.” I’d love to be wrong, but with Ad Astra per Aspera going now, I don’t see how he can long do two manga series and do either justice.
On the red herring, yeah, that’s a possibility. We have weeks to wait and find out though. ^_^;
I have a funny feeling that you’re right wrt Nagi, though I can’t place why. I have a much stronger feeling that you’re right wrt Hina, though it could just be wishful thinking. If nothing else, part of it is a gut feeling that I can only count a few good manga/anime where someone has given up while wearing an expression like Hina has. When someone experiences an apparently-devastating setback, it’s much more common that they grit their teeth and get up to try again, or if they do give up, it’s on their own terms – or at least something they can reconcile with.

I can see that as quite possible in more than one aspect, primarily that he might be seeing that Akamatsu-sensei is much happier and has more time for other things he’s justifiably passionate about (like keeping publishers from taking copyright and creative control away from mangaka, and trying the honey-instead-of-vinegar approach to piracy by offering good legal options).
But I could also see the reverse being true in more than one aspect. Without knowing the sales figures, we don’t know for sure, but I doubt UQH has been nearly as successful as MSN. Even if someone feels better about what they’re doing, that doesn’t necessarily counterbalance material concerns and the feeling of prestige. And it’s possible that he’s finding UQH frustrating in it own way.
In the abstract, I would love to leave my present career and return to an academic one – but I would be leaving something at which I’m very experienced and (though I feel weird saying it about myself) pretty damn good. That’s what I’m used to, and I would get frustrated in an endeavor where lack of experience means re-learning a bunch of skill sets, experiencing multiple setbacks, and occasionally feeling like a toddler falling on their face while learning to walk.
It hasn’t from every indication I see. I believe the last volume saw a big uptick in sales, but speculation is that this is due to the fact that we were dealing with Eva and her past, thus gaining extra sales from old Negima fans.
There are pluses and minuses doing change like that. On one hand, as you say, you are good at what you do and are in a comfort zone. However, this can lead to boredom and the like. On the other hand, you can go do something else that interests you, but then you are starting over and there’s always the risk of failure.
I just noticed something weird when I took another look at the last page… any idea why it says “to be continued in chapter 49”?
The raw at senmanga does say “[kanji] 49 [kanji] … November 4 [etc]”, but it’s weird even if that actually is what it says.
To be continued in issue 49 of Weekly Shounen Magazine. 🙂
Thank you. (^_^) I love Red Hawk for faithfully continuing the translation, but ever since the Hina spa incident I’ve begun to wonder about the accuracy at times.
Accuracy depends on the translator and how much they want to localize things. I’m not a fan of localization. Japanese references should remain Japanese.
Still, I know what you mean. It is at times like these that I wish I were fluent in Japanese so that I weren’t dependent on someone else telling me what was/was not said.
