SPOILER Summary/Synopsis

Shirou goes to his part-time job at Copenhagen, a bar and liquor store. The place’s owner’s daughter, Neko (HOTARUZUKA Otoko), has Shirou help her make liquor deliveries. Their last stop is Ryudouji. As they climb the stairs to the temple, Neko stumbles and is losing her crates of adult beverages. Assassin prevents them from breaking.

After delivering the alcohol to the temple’s kitchen, Shirou notices the spring vegetables around. He mentions how these would be good in sandwiches. This causes Neko and her former classmate (and monk) Reikan to suggest he make some. As such, Shirou boils the greens, cooks some bacon, and scrambles eggs to make sandwiches.

After Neko and Reikan eat, Shirou brings some out to Assassin, who humbly partakes of the food. Issei shows up and isn’t too pleased that only a single sandwich remains. When Shirou leaves, he notices Assassin no longer at the temple’s gate. Sometime later, Caster is sweeping the temple grounds. Assassin asks a surprised and confused Caster about making sandwiches.

Thoughts/Review

Haha! Man, we have another lovely little episode with Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 04, bringing in two more Servants and a couple of very minor characters from Fate/stay night.

Neko Who?

Since I’ve never read the Fate/stay night visual novel, I had no clue who Neko was when she appeared in Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 04. In fact, I had no clue that Shirou held a part-time job in a bar/liquor store. But apparently, Neko does show up briefly in the visual novel if you choose not to help Issei, Shirou’s friend who lives at Ryudouji.

I think I had seen Reikan before since he is Issei’s older brother. That said, I found it interesting to learn in this episode that Reikan, Taiga, and Neko had been classmates when they were in high school. That bit of information is canon. As such, I rather enjoyed seeing a bit of local color featuring very minor characters in Fate/stay night.

Assassin and Caster

While episode 3 came off as a perfect post-Holy Grail War scenario (Shirou’s harem), Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 04 comes off more like, “What if the war was over ended because Gilgamesh and Berserker were removed, but everyone else gets to carry on with a normal life?” So while Assassin may still be guarding the gates of Ryudouji, he’s no longer an enemy. And he appreciated the sandwiches Shirou brought to him.

As to Caster, I enjoy seeing her domestic side. Shirou’s imagination of Caster cooking for her Souichirou-sama made me smile. And it made me remember how much fun she was in Carnival Phantasm. I also got a kick out of Assassin dropping the hint that he wanted Caster to make him a sandwich. That made me laugh.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Time to wrap up my review of Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 04 with some bullet point thoughts.

  • The Japanese have some odd notions when it comes to sandwiches. I’m sure the cooked greens were fine, but outside of raw lettuce, I’m not interested in greens on a sandwich. Even less so when said sandwich contains bacon and scrambled eggs.
  • I got a chuckle out of Shirou being worried on whether Caster was around or not. To be honest, I couldn’t help but wonder if this is because he was worried about the Caster from Fate/stay night, or the Caster from Carnival Phantasm. 😂

In the end, Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 04 was a very fun episode, bringing in minor characters as well as Caster and Assassin from Fate/stay night.
