Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 153
Tonikaku Kawaii Fly Me to the Moon 153
トニカクカワイイ 153
Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:
On the evening of Tokiko’s funeral, Tsukasa decides to tell Nasa her history with Tokiko. At the end of World War II, Tsukasa returned to Japan. During the confusion of the time, she invented a family registry and thus was a citizen. As she wandered around a war-torn city, she encountered a young girl huddled under a pile of debris. Tsukasa left her as the country was filled with such children.
However, the following day, Tsukasa decided to return to the spot to check on the kid. She wasn’t at the debris pile, but Tsukasa did find her walking through the ruined city. Tsukasa stops the apparently orphaned girl and gives her a bag of ohagi to eat. The little girl is amazed to be given this Japanese confection, but turns it down, citing Tsukasa being an adult with a higher chance to live.
Tsukasa is impressed by the little girl’s logical thought process. As such, Tsukasa assures the girl that it is OK for the girl to eat as Tsukasa won’t die. Tsukasa turns to leave with some parting words of encouragement for the girl. In return, the girl grabs Tsukasa and asks Tsukasa to take her with Tsukasa.
Thoughts/Review:
It had already been established (at least to me) that Tsukasa found and rescued Tokiko. However, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 153 gives us the details of that rescue. And I loved every moment of it.
Child Tokiko
Back in chapter 92, I correctly speculated that the little girl in the flashback was Tokiko and the young woman was Tsukasa. As Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 153 proved, I was correct there, though I was off by a couple of years on when this took place. I figured it might be the aftermath of the 1948 Fukui Earthquake. Instead, it was around the end of World War II.
It was gut-wrenching to see the child Tokiko turn down the gift of ohagi to eat because she logically believed that when it came to survival, the adult Tsukasa had the better chance. That isn’t normal child behavior, but that’s what made it more powerful. I suppose in the fires of the war, and apparently losing her parents, Tokiko had to grow up quick.
Still, knowing how much of a troll Tokiko was to Tsukasa, I wonder how she got there? Hopefully, we get to see that.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 153 was an emotional chapter, whereby we see how Tsukasa met Tokiko. I’m really thankful Hata-sensei picked up this story element and hopefully he’ll do more.
