Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 180
Tonikaku Kawaii Fly Me to the Moon 180
トニカクカワイイ 180
Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:
Kaguya spots an unexpected door in the storage cellar. Chitose knows nothing about it, meaning Tokiko kept it secret. Back upstairs, Chitose inquires as to the sleeping arrangements as there are only three futons. She’s not happy at the prospect of having to share a futon with Kaguya. In the meantime, Kaguya asks Tsukasa about the door in the cellar. Tsukasa blows it off as an emergency exit to an underground passage. Kaguya notes how Tsukasa knows the mansion better than Tokiko’s grandchild.
After dinner, Hakase and Hotaru speculate on whether Nasa and Tsukasa will have sex or not. Down in the cellar, Kaguya is about to open the emergency exit door, but is caught by Tsukasa. Kaguya reveals what she’s deduced and has decided to keep investigating. However, Hotaru stops her since Kaguya is being rude. Nasa and Chitose also come down.
To Kaguya’s surprise, Tsukasa invites Kaguya to open the door. She does and the group head through the tunnel, where it exits in a very old graveyard. The writing on the gravestones is so old, no one but Kaguya can read them. She discovers that one of the graves is for the mistress of Minamoto no Yoshitsune — Shizuka-gozen (Lady Shizuka), who went missing over 800 years ago.
Thoughts/Review:
Wow. I really wasn’t expecting to find a graveyard in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 180. It really gives more weight to the notion of Tsukasa’s decision to never return to this place.
Still, it is interesting that Kaguya could read the old Japanese Kanji. To date, the only other person in the manga who can read such old writing was Tsukasa. That suggests to me that this Kaguya is the original Kaguya, even if she has memory issues.
Detective Kaguya
Kaguya has shown herself to be quite the detective. This was no less the case in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 180. Chitose was right to wonder if Kaguya could uncover Tsukasa’s secret. Kaguya noted that while Tokiko owned the land, Chitose didn’t know jack. Yet Tsukasa, who’s not related to Tokiko, was very knowledgeable. So clearly, Kaguya figures Tsukasa is in on the secret.
For her part, Tsukasa figured Kaguya would be nosy. Thus she confronts Kaguya in the cellar. I can’t help but wonder if there would have been more tension had Hotaru not comedically stopped Kaguya from opening the door on her own. Instead, a resigned Tsukasa allows Kaguya and the others in on one of her secrets, though only Nasa and Chitose know the full scope of it.
The Graveyard
I gotta admit, I didn’t expect there to be a graveyard in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 180. Shizuka-gozen getting a name drop is interesting. She is a real, historical person. However, it is difficult to know how much of recorded history about her is fiction. That said, in Hata-sensei’s universe, she disappeared after the death of Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
I figure this graveyard may be filled with two types of folks. The first might be folks whom Tsukasa has helped, but they died just the same. Considering the history of Shizuka, I suspect Tsukasa took her in and she died, hiding at Kyoumaru Mansion.
The second might be folks whom Tsukasa was forced to kill over the centuries. I can see Tsukasa somehow burying those who would harm her out of respect. Tsukasa has mentioned “sins” before, and a graveyard would remind her of said sins. It is no wonder that now that she has Nasa, she doesn’t want to return to Kyoumaru Mansion, despite his mortality.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 180 was a very good chapter, revealing a big secret of Kyuoumaru Mansion. I look forward to seeing what’s next. However, what happened to the rest of Nasa’s female students who were left behind?
[blockquote]It is no wonder that now that she has Nasa, she doesn’t want to return to Kyoumaru Mansion, despite his mortality.[/blockquote]
I’d say all the more because of his mortality… if those are people she’s lost over the years, I imagine that she’s trying very hard not to think about the apparent inevitability that Nasa will become the next one.
I have a theory from way back that Nasa is a reincarnation of Prince Shōtoku. As such, I think that’s kinda why she decided to accept Nasa.
I’m primarily guessing at why in this moment, she might be subconsciously-but-strenuously avoiding having it shoved in her face that everyone she’s let into her life eventually dies. I do that a lot these days — trying to figure out what might be driving people, whether they’re conscious of it or not (with “not” being perhaps most likely). It’s a terribly useful frame of reference*, when trying to figure out why people in my care are doing things that don’t make sense and/or hurt themselves.
Going back to the true topic: If Nasa is a reincarnation of Prince Shōtoku (which I can easily see), do you think that would augur an ending in which Nasa becomes immortal?
Feel free to laugh, but I think the seed for it was a rewatch of the Gecko Ending of Negima’s S1 anime: The key to prevent tragedy from happening all over again is Negi learning how to listen to the real voice of Asuna’s heart, not just her words.
I think Tsukasa becomes mortal. I think that the Kaguya on Earth now is the same from the past, at least at some level. (Her attending school is a possible flaw in my theory.) And at some point, I think Kaguya and Tsukasa will work together (with Nasa) to solve both their problems as it seems their fates are tied together.
Well, I think the cries of the heart are what Kaguya has heard from Tsukasa over the years.
Assuming Hata-sensei doesn’t get bored with the manga (he apparently was planning to end it until he saw the success of the anime), I would like to see all of these things explored.
