Spy×Family 03 (Family Outing! #SPY_FAMILY)

Spy×Family 03

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis

Yor moves into Twilight’s home. Anya happily shows her new Mama around. Twilight shows the forged marriage license, stating they’ve been married for a year. He figures they’ll need to come up with an explanation for Yor’s brother. Meanwhile, Yor has her own room, but for appearances, they will make it seem like she and Twilight share a room.

After having some tea, Twilight decides to practice the family interview. He’s a bit depressed that it does not go well. As such, he decides they should go for an outing. First, they attend an opera. Next, they go to an art gallery. Then they head to the tailor shop to get Yor an outfit for the school interview. Then they get a family photo. Finally, they attend a political rally, where the crowd overwhelms Anya’s telepathy.

The trio leave and head to a restaurant. However, Twilight is not so pleased with how Anya plays with her food or Yor admires her knife. Yor notices Twilight is worried and says they should get some air. They go to a park that overlooks part of the city. There, they see a purse snatcher steal an old lady’s purse. Yor instinctively goes after him.

Twilight attempts to follow with Anya. Despite not liking the crowd, Anya spots the thief. To not give away her secret, she points to a cake shop that the thief is passing in front of. Yor returns, so Twilight leaves Anya with her as he subdues the thief. Afterward, Twilight is pleased the folks see them as an actual family. As such, he tests Yor and Anya again, and they have better family answers.

Thoughts/Review

Time for more Anya awesomeness in Spy×Family 03.

Spy×Family 03

Anya

As expected, the adorable Anya shines in Spy×Family 03, even as it seems the writers are attempting to subdue her a bit. If they didn’t, she’d just totally steal the show. That aside, I loved how Anya was trying to impress Yor by giving her a tour of their nice home. Not only that, but Anya kept wanting Yor to know she helped with cleaning or baking cookies. Of course the unthinking Twilight reveals how Anya didn’t do much but make more of a mess. Poor Anya. At least Yor didn’t care about that.

Spy×Family 03

Where Anya really stole the show was in the outing. Her opinion of opera and mine are the same. Booor-ing! Then at the art gallery, she did what kids would do when there’s a giant painting of a nude woman — loudly announce it. 😂 And though she finds Yor cool, she still gets freaked out whenever Yor’s assassination thoughts leak out. Anya is just awesomeness.

Spy×Family 03

I really liked how the writers (I’m assuming this came from the source manga) acknowledge Anya’s difficulties in a crowd. With so many minds hitting her at once, it is no wonder she feels ill for a time. She’s being overwhelmed. I couldn’t help but think of an episode of Babylon 5 where the subject of untrained telepaths is dealt with. There was a similar situation in Star Trek: The Next Generation, where the telepath couldn’t block thoughts.

Spy×Family 03

Anya is young, so I hope she can somehow be taught how to block thoughts when needed.

Spy×Family 03

Yor

Yor was the other fun element of Spy×Family 03. I laughed out loud a bit when I saw her getting flushed over seeing artwork depicting a guillotine. Then later at the restaurant, she got flushed over her steak knife. Then there were her thoughts about not wanting a blue dress due to the possibility of blood stains.  I’m guessing there’s a “lost in translation” joke regarding Yor’s initial answers to the family interview quiz. Her answer made no sense to the question, but the answer itself was funny, as was Anya’s reaction to it.

Spy×Family 03

Still, Yor shows that despite her bloodlust, she has a good heart. She wants to get along with Anya, and does. Not only that, when she saw a thief steal from an old lady, she just went after him. Ironically, all three members of this “family” worked together to nail the guy. Yet only Anya is aware of everyone’s secret.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review of Spy×Family 03 with some final thoughts.

  • I liked how the production team made sure new viewers as well as returning visitors were fully aware of the three lead characters and their roles in this series. Further, we were reminded of the political situation and Twilight’s mission. Too often, anime adaptations leave too much information behind, so it was refreshing to see the opposite here.
  • I’m curious about Yor’s brother. We aren’t being shown a photo of him. Further, Yor hasn’t seen him in a while. I can’t help but think he’ll be an opponent for Twilight, forcing Yor to make a decision between her fake husband (whom she’ll have feelings for), and her brother. I’m probably dead wrong, but we’ll see what happens.

Spy×Family 03

In the end, Spy×Family 03 is more good stuff. I really enjoy the fun nature of the episode. Further, I like seeing how this artificial family is coming together to eventually become a real family.
