Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

In the distant past, the apothecary Tsukasa pays a visit to a dying patient. She comes upon a well dressed man (the emperor) whom she does not know, crying in the woods by a stream. Eventually, he reveals that he was instantly rejected by the girl he confessed to. As such, Tsukasa offers to hear hm out and lend him advice as a girl.

The emperor asks if there is a way to get a girl who’s not interested in you to become interested. Tsukasa informs him that girls are interested in the latest things. The emperor isn’t so sure that Tsukasa isn’t just referring to herself. However, he recalls that Kaguya sent the five suitors on a quest to bring her gifts, suggesting they might be trendy things.

Tsukasa continues, stating that gifts won’t cut it. A man has to offer his hear to win a woman’s heart. In order to do this, the new, trendy, thing called “paper” comes into play. The look and feel of paper will grab her attention. Then the feeling-filled words written on the paper, using ink, should further captivate her. As such, she advises him to write his thoughts on paper. Tsukasa impresses the emperor with this new invention of hers, the love letter.

Sometime later, the emperor’s first love letter is delivered to Kaguya. As Tsukasa predicted, Kaguya was intrigued and enchanted by not only the paper, but the words written thereon.

Thoughts/Review:

Hahaha! So, Tsukasa invents the love letter in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 199. Awesome.

Tsukasa and the Emperor

I find it interesting that in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 199, Tsukasa marks her tragedy started just prior to meeting the emperor. It has to be pretty jacked up for Tsukasa to have to tell someone with a disease that they are past the point of saving. Even in her own family, her mom and siblings are dead. Nevertheless, she does what she can to help folks in need.

And thus we come to the emperor. Tsukasa meeting him is purely by chance. Funny thing is, she doesn’t recognize him as the emperor. But then few people probably saw the actual emperor. And without his entourage, who would suspect a well dressed man, crying in the woods, would in fact be emperor?

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the interactions between Tsukasa and the emperor. Tsukasa is her normal self. The emperor doesn’t know what to make of her and her seemingly outlandish thoughts. But in the end, he goes along with it. And based on Kaguya’s reaction to his first love letter, Tsukasa “inventing” the love letter was a big success.

Interestingly enough, this reminded me of chapter 29, where we learn that Tsukasa is well trained in handling a katana. And she can read ancient Japanese. Thus in Nasa’s father’s study, she found the book containing ancient writing and spotted a love letter. I can’t help but wonder if this was the letter the emperor wrote.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 199 was a very interesting chapter, documenting more of Tsukasa’s life prior to becoming immortal. I love it!
