Spy×Family 17

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis

Anya has a new family portrait with the dog Bond in it. She wants to impress Damian, but he’s not interested. Becky sees the picture and is smitten by Twilight’s looks. In art class, Anya is happy to be paired up with Damian as it gives her another shot. She makes a terrible, paper dog representation of Bond and again fails.

Reading Damian’s mind, Anya discovers he’s trying he’s attempting to make a griffin, based on his family crest. Further, he’s doing this to impress his father. As such, Anya decides to help, thinking she will be praised and invited over. Becky observes Anya’s actions and thinks Anya has a crush on Damian. He reluctantly agrees to the help. However, when Anya makes jets for the griffin to fly, Damian goes off on her.

Damian gets in trouble for demanding the paper of the others at the table. Understanding Damian’s situation, Anya offers her Bond creation, saying it can be a female griffin. On the day their creations are to be judged, Anya and Damian’s creation wins. Damian vows to never show the abomination to his father, crushing Anya. That night, Damian calls home and speaks with the family butler.

Some other time, Handler shows how she deals with tails assigned to keep tabs on her. Twilight reports on Anya’s PE progress. Meanwhile, Yuri’s upbringing made him the tough person he is today.

Thoughts/Review

I’m running behind getting my review of Spy×Family 17 out, but it was a good episode.

Operation Griffin

The main thrust of Spy×Family 17 is Anya continuing to attempt to impress Damian. The humorous parts are Anya imagining how things will go. Naturally, things never go as planned, so Anya is constantly crushed. But, she never gives up. And thanks to her telepathy, she’s able to understand why Damian goes off on her.

Naturally, this rubbish creation that Damian and Anya build would win top prize.

As an aside, the episode stunned me when I heard Damian swear in English. I don’t think I’ve heard that in an anime before. 😅

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

I’m behind, and there wasn’t a lot to say about Spy×Family 17. So I’ll wrap up with some final thoughts.

• I find it amusing that Becky develops a crush on Twilight after seeing his picture.
• The story about Handler is an omake chapter from volume 7 of the manga.
• In addition, the story about Yuri’s childhood eating Yor’s cooking came from a 1-page omake in volume 5. Not enough barfing noises to make it funny to me.

In the end, Spy×Family 17 is a fun episode, though not a whole lot to say about it. We do get more character development for Damian, which is good.
