Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Asimo and Himari see Nasa and Tsukasa while on the observation deck of Tokyo Tower. When Himari hears Asimo call out Nasa’s name, she faints. When she comes to, she’s seated at a booth in a cafe in the tower. Asimo arrives with drinks, explaining how she got there. He then asks if Nasa is the guy Himari used to like. She reminds him she was only four at the time. Asimo informs her that Nasa is the guy who beat him on the different exams, including the recent mock exam. As such, he asks Himari that if he defeats Nasa and finishes first, that she go out with him.

Nasa and Tsukasa arrive with ice cream for Himari and Asimo. Tsukasa gets a bit sarcastic with Nasa about the situation. However, now that Nasa knows Asimo’s goal, he decides that he will get serious on the upcoming exam. Himari protests, but Nasa says it would be wrong to just let Asimo win. Asimo agrees, stating that an effortless win would not have meaning.

After Asimo and Himari return to their separate abodes, Himari thinks back to the encounter with Nasa and Tsukasa. She remembers Tsukasa from some previous encounter, whom she thought to never see again.

Thoughts/Review:

We get the reunion of Nasa with both Asimo and Himari in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 239. As expected, Himari now recognizes Nasa as the boy she made fun of as a little child. So both Himari and Asimo have their connections to Nasa. But, while I thought this might lead to some dumb love-square thing, I get the sense from this chapter that this won’t be the case. Instead, Hata-sensei is using Himari’s prior connection to Nasa to make Asimo even more determined to defeat Nasa in the exams.

I do like how Asimo got to come out and tell Himari what he wanted as his reward from her if he got first place on the exams. Had Asimo been a cliched, indecisive character trope, the chapter wouldn’t have been as entertaining. However, Asimo is going for the babe, and to do that, he’s willing to go all out. The surprise to me is Nasa deciding to up the stakes and not back down from doing the exams. It makes him seem a bit of a jerk, but I understand why Hata-sensei is doing this. I can’t imagine Nasa losing, but we’ll see where Hata-sensei takes things.

Finally, the twist in the chapter is that Himari recognizes Tsukasa from a previous encounter. That is plot convenient, but considering how Tsukasa is, this twist isn’t a problem for me. I think that’s because this twist cemented the notion that Hata-sensei isn’t going to have Himari have lingering feelings for Nasa. Her focus will be Tsukasa.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, the dread I felt going into Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 239 proved to be unfounded. Thanks to the twist at the end of the chapter, combined with the continued advancement of the Himari x Asimo romance, this chapter became far more interesting that I had thought. Nice one, Hata-sensei!
