Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 09
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
The White Mage reveals herself to Natsu, Erza, Happy, and Lucy. She realizes that the others of Team Natsu are missing. As such, she has Mirajane punished by her little sister Lisanna and little brother Elfman. Meanwhile, Juvia briefs Gray, Wendy, and Charle about the White Mage and Touka. To that end, they are able to arrive in time for Wendy to prevent the White Mage from capturing Natsu and company. They make their retreat so that Juvia can brief the whole team.
At the same time, the White Mage sends out Fairy Tail teams to destroy various orbs that power the wood dragon god, Aldoron. Thanks to Touka, Juvia recites the White Mage’s orders to Fairy Tail. As such, it is decided that Team Natsu will split up to battle their guildmates, render them unconscious, thus allowing Wendy to free them. This excites Natsu.
Gray and Juvia head off to one of the other towns with an orb. Juvia reveals she’s powerless, thanks to the White Mage. As such, when they are confronted by the Thunder God Tribe (sans Laxus), Gray has to battle them alone. Elsewhere, Mirajane, Elfman, and Lisanna confront Lucy. She summons Loke and Virgo, both who state they won’t be strong enough to defeat Mirajane. For her part, Mirajane transforms, so Virgo happily submits to punishment from her.
Natsu easily defeats the small fry of Fairy Tail. Gajeel challenges him. As the two duke it out, Lily challenges the timid Happy. However, when Lily sees Natsu powering up, he decides to make a retreat. Happy takes advantage and knocks him out with a fish.
Thoughts/Review:
Well, I was right about a new inter-guild battle in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 09. And right off the bat, we get rematches from the OG Fairy Tail manga.
The Battle of Fairy Tail, Take 2
I don’t remember a ton about The Battle of Fairy Tail, but I remember enough to recall that Gray did get defeated by Bickslow, with the aide of Fried and Evergreen. So it amused me that in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 09, Bickslow and the other members of the Thunder God Tribe (sans Laxus) are once again fighting Gray. Well, if you are going to jangle a lot of keys and shake a lot of member berries, you may as well go all out. As such, I find I don’t mind this bit of member berry fun.
I did like that the episode had Bickslow mention their previous fight. That helped my own memory of the OG fight. I suspect it will help new viewers to the franchise understand the Thunder God Tribe and Gray had an antagonistic relationship in the past. Gray has no support from the powerless Juvia. So I do wonder how he’ll handle things, since I seem to recall that Fried can create territories (or something like that) with specific rules that can render Gray harmless.
Natsu vs. Gajeel…Again
Another member berry in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 09 is the rematch between Gajeel and Natsu. I vividly remember that in the Phantom Lord arc, Gajeel did a number on various Fairy Tail members. Thus he had to battle Natsu. I want to say they had a couple of fights in the OG Fairy Tail, but I don’t remember for sure. Nevertheless, they get to fight again. The fun thing about this fight is that Natsu wants to do it.
As an aside, the “fight” between Lily and Happy made me chuckle. I don’t remember why Lily would have trauma over seeing Natsu powering up with a fight+lightning attack. But he did, and Happy got the sneak attack with a fish for the win.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
I’m falling asleep as I write, so let me wrap up my review of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 09 with some final thoughts.
- I don’t know if Lucy’s “magic girl” henshin sequence is in the source manga or not. It felt like a combination of parody and filler. I don’t recall any other Star outfit of Lucy’s resulting in a transformation scene.
- While I appreciate that the subtitles include the Japanese honorifics, I wish they also included the brother/sister ones. This became painfully obvious with Mirajane’s siblings.
- Gajeel and Juvia were enemies of Fairy Tail in the Phantom Lord arc. Gajeel was ready to kill members of Fairy Tail. Today, they are redeemed members. Laxus, Bickslow, Fried, and Evergreen were also enemies of Fairy Tail during the fore mentioned Battle of Fairy Tail. They too threatened to kill their fellow guildmates. They too were redeemed. So in that light, how does the White Mage get redeemed? Considering Mashima-sensei’s track recorder, I feel 99.9% sure redemption will happen for the White Mage. I just don’t see how.
In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 09 jangles some keys and member berries as guild members have rematches of fights long ago.
