Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Übel presses her attack on Wirbel. He uses a spell that binds her, preventing her from moving or using magic. When he releases her in order for her to hand over her Stille, she realizes the limitation of his binding magic. She attempts to take out his eyes, but fails, ending up bound again. To buy time, she gets him to talk a bit about his past. He goes along as a way of steeling himself to kill Übel.

Meanwhile, Fern overwhelms Ehre and gets the drop on Wirbel. Fern claims to have killed Ehre, so Wirbel gives up. However, he soon discovers the unconscious Ehre. He carries her to find Scharf, whom they find defeated by Land’s cloning illusion magic. Wirbel has to get both out, but Ehre sees a Stille, allowing Wirbel to capture it.

Elsewhere, Laufen uses her speed magic to snatch Frieren’s bird cage from her. Denken and Richter confront Frieren’s party. Richter wants to kill Lawine and Kanne to solve the problem, but Denken forbids it. Frieren approves of this since a piece of paper isn’t worth killing for. This offends Richter, who tells her that the head of the Mage Association, Serie, wants powerful mages. Further, the reward for becoming a First Class Mage is any spell known to Serie.

Outside the barrier, proctors Genau and Sense discuss the situation. Inside, Richter raises the ground he, Lawine, and Kanne are on, separating them from Frieren. The elf is unmoved and prepares to battle Denken.

Thoughts/Review

Man, the awesomeness of this series doesn’t stop in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 20.

Psychos and Stuff

We get an interesting battle between psychos Wirbel and Übel in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 20. Her cutting magic basically clear cuts the forest for 5 meters in front of her. Yet she stops and Wirbel binds her with his magic. Yet he doesn’t kill her. Yamada-sensei takes this opportunity to give a look at Wirbel’s past. Wow. No wonder he’s part messed up, yet still has a good side to him, as seen when he helps his teammates.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 20

It dawned on me that Fern is basically using the equivalent of Magic Missiles from OG D&D. If you can fire tons of them, you can overwhelm an opponent. And that’s what she did to Ehre. I liked that Fern bluffed to Wirbel about killing Ehre.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 20

We also get to see Land’s cloning, illusion magic for the first time. This is a good magic to use to scout out places and even use combat magic with, all while your real self is observing from a safe distance.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 20

Finally, there’s Denken’s party. Man, Richter is a real piece of work. He’s not wrong in that killing Kanne and or Lawine eliminates Frieren. Yet for some reason, he obeys Denken. Through Richter, we get some exposition on Serie, the powerful elf mage who runs the Magic Association.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End 20

As to Denken himself, it is clear he wants to test himself against the legendary mage, Frieren. Besides wanting to avoid pointless deaths, I think he understands that keeping Frieren’s party members alive gives him the best shot at fighting her.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 20 is just another really good entry in this series. And I appreciate that the story allows us to get to know some of these new characters in a deeper fashion than one might otherwise expect.
