Izetta: The Last Witch 11
Shumatsu no Izetta episode 11
Izetta, Die Letzte Hexe 11
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis
Berkman visits the White Witch shrine in Eylstadt, then visits Rickert’s grave. The SS have discovered Finé’s secret hideout and invaded. After executing a number of prisoners, Finé surrenders. However, she and the Court are saved when Izetta, powered by the Magic Stone, destroys the SS. The commander and Berkman flee. Berkman gets confirmation that the SS had orders to execute him, so he kills the commander and surrenders to Eylstadt.
At their new hideout, Berkman gives intel to Sieg regarding a new magic-powered nuclear bomb. While the two are similar, Sieg is relieved to discover he’s not a sellout like Berkman. When Finé is briefed, she wants to surrender. Izetta slaps her as a result and after an angry scolding from the witch, Finé changes her mind. Izetta prepares to challenge Sophie in battle while Finé, Sieg, Bianca, and Berkman head to a peace conference. At a checkpoint, Captain Basler shows up, apparently expecting Berkman, and expresses his disappointment.
Thoughts and Review
There were all kinds of nifty twists and turns in this episode. But, that’s what makes for an interesting episode.
The Berkman Problem
As seen with the Jonas incident, the writers of Izetta: The Last Witch 11 aren’t above playing fast and loose with things. In episode 10, we learned that Berkman had been fired from his job for his success. Now, the SS has orders to eliminate him. That said, why let Berkman take a trip to see the sights in Eylstadt? Clearly, the writers wanted a reason for Berkman to switch sides and prove himself. So we make the SS be stupid to achieve that. I’m not a big fan of that.
The other issue that came up with Berkman is actually with Captain Basler. Why would an Air Force captain (and squad or flight leader) be part of a checkpoint for a meeting? It is as if Basler knew Berkman would be showing up, which made no sense to me. Izetta slaughtered the SS troops and Berkman killed the SS commander, so as far as anyone in Germania knows, Berkman is dead.
There’s always the possibility that Berkman is trying to set up things so he can return to the good graces of Emperor Otto.
Sieg
I rather enjoyed the meeting of Sieg and Berkman. Both had similar roles for their receptive countries. Both have been willing to do whatever it takes for their country. It amused me that both were very much aware of the other.
With Sieg having offered Izetta the Magic Stone in the previous episode, I had thought that he’d be willing to coldly sacrifice her based on what he did to Jonas. After watching the episode, I don’t get quite the same impression. It actually feels like he’s trying to atone for his family’s treatment of Sophie in the past. That was something I had considered previously. I hope this is where things end up.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
As usual these days, I’m pressed for time, so I’ll wrap this up.
- Even if Izetta defeats Sophie, I suspect a tragic ending for her. At minimum, she’s crippled for life. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if she died.
- That said, I did love seeing Izetta going nuts
- Because of the number of people who’ve died, every episode makes me wonder who’s going to bite the bullet next. After escaping death last episode, I really thought Major Obermeyer was going to die in the fight with the SS.
- I can kinda see Berkman and Sieg dying. I hope Lotte, Bianca, nor Finé die. I’d prefer Izetta not die either.
- Blog reader Sanchi remarked on how the new weapon looked a lot like the test nuclear bomb. That was a correct call.
- We’d seen the V-1 show up in previous episodes. We got to see the V-2 as the missile to deliver the new, magic-nuclear bomb.
In the end, Izetta: The Last Witch 11 is another good episode.
I am wondering too if Berkman and Basler is planning something as in some form of sabotage. Killing the SS officer as a cover to convince others of Berkman’s legit in defecting. Meeting at the check-point was planned as a confirmation of a hidden agenda.
I think I’m watching too many NCIS, Hawaii 5-0, CSI and 007 Bond movies….. too suspicious of everything! 🙂
Well, the writers have done a good job of keeping things uncertain by killing characters and not being totally predictable.
What, no comment on their magic carpet ride, featuring “A whole new world” as the OST? 😛
Yeah, not much I had to say about that. What were your thoughts on that?
Good morning. Just writing this to say that I have been enjoying your review of Izetta the last witch, and I am eagerly looking forward to the next review.
Thanks. The new review should have just posted.
