Angel Beats! — Key References in Episode 10

I’m sure some of you may have caught these, but our Japanese cousins posted an image showing that three of Yui’s stuffed animals came from previous Key productions (two from Ariand one from Clannad).

What? You’ve never heard of “Ari?” Come on!

*LOL*

Yes, the poster of the first image took some abuse for misspelling Air but I love what they did with the photoshopped images. ^_^

I had only remembered the dinosaur stuffed animal (“GAO!”) but had forgotten Potato. I didn’t even catch the Botan (Button) reference.

Anyway, I’m working on my review of episode 10 after being reduced to this by the end of the episode.

    I couldn’t even tell that was Buton. PA Works, you suck.

    Maeda references in a Maeda anime? Next you’ll be telling me Durarara has references to other Brains Base shows 🙂

    But yeah, it was nice to notice that for a change instead of deformed hands or other lazy animation techniques.

    Ha, nice catch. Didn’t even notice, though admittedly, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Air. No Kanon reference? c’mon, stop slacking people!

    @Roy — Well, when one isn’t looking hard (and I usually don’t), one might not be able to tell. ^_^;

    @Topspin — Yeah, imagine Maeda-sensei putting in nods to his previous works. *lol*

    @Josh — When one watches a lot of anime (or non-anime stuff for that matter) combined with the passage of time, it is no wonder that people wouldn’t notice. I’m not sure what prompted me to think of Air when I saw the dino, especially when I’ve been thinking of the potential parallels between Angel Beats! and Clannad. One would have thought I would have noticed Botan/Button. ^_^;

    Well, since I haven’t watched (yet) either Air nor Aria, initially I didn’t see anything wrong with the photoshopped pictures. The girl was just a stylized “A”. After you said they were shopped I realized what happened.

    I don’t think the Japanese kidders were thinking of Aria (I haven’t watched that anime, though it has been recommended to me) when they made their photoshopped images. That silhouette of the girl was always part of the Air logo and so they just took the logo and moved “i” and “r” around so that it spelled “Ari.”

    The Japanese can be quite scornful of mistakes. Sometime back, someone did some ASCII art of two Touhou characters for 2CH (a common practice) but they looked so weird, they were mocked, became characters of their own through the mockery, and then became a symbol of 2CH.

    As I see it, the Japanese were mocking the original poster for his Engrish misspelling of “Air,” but in a clever way.

    Huh. Haruhippe is still one of my of my favorites – but after the last two episodes, she’s well behind Otonashi and Kanade.

    However, now I’m seriously confused about what happens to students when they pass on. Am I misremembering in thinking that up until now, speculation has been that they’re all dead and won’t go back to their bodies?

    @ANB: I saw it the same way wrt the teasing about Ari, but it’s not just the Japanese who can be scornful of (and poke fun at) mistakes. The morans guy got so infamous that “moran” now needs its own Wikipedia disambiguation page.
