SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Genshiken Nidaime Chapter 99 Manga ReviewRika, Yajima, and Hato go to pick up Risa, who’s upset at having to wait there so long. At Rika’s suggestion, Risa asks if Hato is still smooth, leading Yajima to smack Rika. Risa then asks that if she makes it in, would Hato wear a pair of short shorts, leading to an attack by Yajima.

Risa and Rika head home as Yajima and Hato go their own way, discussing the sisters and Hato’s plans for the day. When Yajima learns that Sue has been coming by Hato’s place for meals, she realizes she has lots of rivals before catching herself. She then asks if she can come over, which Hato agrees to. While the three eat, Yajima and Hato discuss why they came to Shiiou. Hato states that there’s something he wants to do which dressing as a woman will allow him to do. Sue interrupts, asking for more food. Hato says he’ll explain it in front of the group soon.

Meanwhile, Risa and Rika reach Rika’s place, where Rika offers up her bed. As they eat dinner, the two discuss possibly living together if Risa gets in and their parent’s thinking Risa’s choice of college is odd since it isn’t for basketball.  Rika begins drinking heavily, amazed that Risa is worried about what their parents think when she was the one who failed to get into school on her first try; a girl who’s also a fujoshi into older men.

Rika says they must plan for what to do if Risa gets in, such as getting Hato to wear shorts and knee-high socks. She tempts her younger sister with the idea of what would be under those shorts and cotton Y-fronts. Risa confesses that this idea of legal shouta action has her really excited, so Rika agrees to help Risa obtain her goal.

That night, Rika falls asleep at the kotatsu despite having mentioned not going to bed before the test. Risa goes to bed, setting an alarm to get up for the test in plenty of time. The next morning, Rika is awakened by her vibrating phone, where her parents have been trying to call. Seeing the time, she wakes up Risa in a panic, as Risa was using Rika’s broken alarm clock. Both get dressed in a panic, Rika asking Risa not to give up even though the testing start time has passed. Heading out the door, they find a snow storm in progress, meaning Shiiou delayed its testing start time by three hours, allowing Risa to get there, take the test, and even pass. However, it seems Hato would not be wearing the shorts despite Risa getting in.

Thoughts/Review:

With the focus of this chapter primarily being about Risa and her shoutacon fetish, I couldn’t help but think that while in the original Genshiken, Kio-sensei did brush the topic of lolicon fetish, he kept a very high wall between the 2D world and the real world. With Risa, Kio-sensei can explore the similar topic of the shoutacon fetish, only with Hato’s shaving his nether regions shaved for his cross dressing. Thus Risa’s fantasy could become a reality, as she put it, in a very legal way.

Seeing Risa’s burning desire to have her fantasy come true made me feel sorry for her. On one hand, Rika is not helping the situation by stirring the pot of Risa’s desires, not giving a care about what Hato thinks. I can’t help but think that things aren’t going to go the way Risa wants, and I’m not talking about the short shorts, which Kio-sensei has already stated won’t be happening.  I still ship the Hato x Risa express, but I just don’t think it will happen, even though Risa has openly expressed her interest in him to Hato’s face.

Genshiken Nidaime Chapter 99 Manga Review

I liked that Risa and Rika did have a nice chat about things, including the possibility of being roommates (or not) as well as trying to get Risa hooked up with Hato. I sorta hope they are roommates because I think that could be interesting.

Still, with Risa having passed the entrance exam, she should soon join the ranks of Genshiken as a new 1st year member. So I am looking forward to her arrival and too see how things change with her around on a full time basis.

Since Sue usually is a scene stealer, Kio-sensei pretty much keeps her quiet again, only enjoying the food and tea as prepared by Hato. I really, REALLY want Sue’s backstory explored and more of Sue’s life looked at. I wonder if Kio-sensei finds it difficult to do since Sue’s American, not Japanese.  Still, I did find it interesting that Sue has taken to coming over to Hato’s place for meals.  I also enjoyed the hand snow sculptures she did at Madarame’s apartment.

Speaking of getting development, Yajima is finally getting more focus, which I like. If there was any doubt, there should be none now regarding her attraction to Hato. It is funny, but Madarame has his harem, but now Hato has one too with Risa, Yajima, and lest we forget, Konno.  It seems that Yajima sees Sue as a rival as well, but I don’t get that sense at all.

Finally, what is this thing that Hato wants to try, thanks to dressing up as a woman? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Although I found it harder than expected to write about this chapter, it was a very interesting one. Since the next chapter is out, I’ll have to give it a gander.

Sue really is “the star of the show”. She had, what, two appearances and totally stole the scene more often than that.

As for Risa, well… It was nice to see Kio-sensei give as a blatant, open female perv in her (likely partially because of exam stress, though largely because of Rika). Not that she was the first one I saw (or even the first in this series), but usually they are more overplayed for laughs (like Kuroko of Railgun) or really underplayed (because, you know, girls are pure and beautiful and stuff). What I’m trying to say, she was portrayed more like a guy than a girl in that sense and more realistically than what is usually seen in manga/anime.
    So gender-equality to the world?

Sue is awesomeness and a half, to be sure. And to think, when she was first introduced, I didn’t care for her much. That quickly changed in Nidaime. ^_^

Yeah, I know what you mean. However, that moment where she’s shown burning with desire made her very feminine though (to me at least).

Man, if Kio-sensei reveals Sue’s past, and it’s sad…I’ll just lose it. We know she’s fluent enough in Japanese, so her reluctance to talk outside of anime quotes and the odd outburst about Ogiue related to a painful experience or memory makes a lot of sense to me.

I can see her unloading all of her pent up stress, emotions, and past on Madarame, burying her head into his chest, and sobbing, and I want to cry right now, damn it.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I hear ya. I don’t think she’ll have a sad past, but I could be wrong.

The thing is, I’m not sure that Kio-sensei has thought about Sue’s back history. I say this because if you’ll recall, she was one of Ohno’s best friends from America along with Angela. Yet in all this time, Ohno and Sue aren’t very close, and one would think they would be.

Secondly, Kio-sensei doesn’t explore the past of most of his characters. Only Ogiue and Hato have gotten any decent back story information provided about them. That’s unfortunate, but a byproduct of Genshiken being in a monthly seinen title.
