Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 3rei!! Episode 10 REVIEW
Fate/kaleid liner プリズマ☆イリヤ 3rei!!
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10After hearing Ilya’s proclamation on saving both this world and Miyu, Darius finds this amusing and lets Ilya know this via Flash Air. Miyu gains hope by Ilya’s words. Kuro has Ilya uninstall Assassin and quietly slips Ilya the rest of the Class Cards. Kuro sends a signal to the invisible Ruby, Gil-kun, and Bazett. Gil and Bazett remove the seals on Luvia and Rin. After that, Gil binds Angelica. Gil reveals he is using Hades’s Cap of Invisibility and disappears again. Despite being bound, Angelica unleashes a massive barrage, which the hidden Gil-kun takes into his treasury.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10Kuro dispatches Gil-kun as Angelica frees herself and produces a large number of shields from the Gate of Babylon. Kuro fires at the castle tower where Miyu is held captive, blowing the top off and exposing Miyu, Erica, and Darius. Angelica launches a barrage at Ilya, but Ilya erects a barrier, now having Ruby in hand. Darius attacks with Crown Undertaker, capturing Ilya in a sphere of thorny vines. Darius uses Ninth Prayer to launch a massive obelisk at her. Ilya uses Sakura Saber Saber Lily to free herself and destroy the pillar. Darius easily defends against Saber Lily-Ilya, but Ilya uses the Caster Class Card to produce the Rule Breaker dagger to stab Darius with.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10Darius goes down and the castle tower turns into a solid stone tower with an open petal top. Angelica and Beatrice come to their master’s defense as Ilya gives Miyu Sapphire. The castle is being replaced with a mountain as Beatrice breaks up Ilya’s and Miyu’s reunion. Erica asks if Miyu is leaving them. Ilya tells Erica that she wants to save everyone.  Miyu believes in Ilya because they are friends. Erica asks if she and Miyu are friends, but Miyu tells her they aren’t. Erica is devastated by this. Angelica threatens Miyu’s brother, not knowing the Gil-kun has just rescued him.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10Meanwhile, Darius transforms into an unhappy Julian. He uses Flash Air to grab Ilya’s Caster card and destroy it. He then pulls a massive cube from where it was hidden above the castle. This causes the sleeping Tanaka to awaken in the school. Miyu explains to Ilya that Darius has long been dead and that his son Julian used displacement magic to impersonate his father. Julian comforts the crushed Erica, saying he’s her only ally and family. She puts her trust in him, after which Julian causes black goo to pour from the cube and drown her before flowing to the earth. Failed Heroic Spirits emerge with only the thought of getting the Holy Grail (Miyu). Ilya prevents Miyu from giving into Julian’s demands to submit as Shirou emerges to save the fleeing Rin, Luvia, and Bazett.

Thoughts/Review:

Wow. Just wow. There were a lot of incredible developments here. While there is certainly a lot of great things in this episode, I do have a few quibbles.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Freeing Friends and Allies

I had been wondering What Gil-kun, Bazett, and Ruby were up to. I hadn’t expected them to be invisible in order to get behind Angelica. This is probably one of the only times Angelica has been truly surprised and allowed that emotion to show. That made it worth the price of admission.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Once Luvia and Rin were free, sadly they had nothing to do but complain about their dress and such. Well, that and they had to flee for their lives. Hopefully, they can become more useful in the future. However, I’m glad to have them back.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Miyu also became freed as a result of the assault on the Ainsworth castle. It is nice to see her back in her magic girl outfit, even if she didn’t do anything constructive. She did provide some exposition on Julian (more on that later), but the rest of her actions actually were bad. I’ll speak more on that in a bit.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

And finally, Shirou gets freed. Unlike Ilya’s Shirou-oniichan, Miyu’s Shirou-oniichan appears to be fairly powerful, able to use the same abilities as Shirou from Fate/stay night. I’m rather looking forward to seeing him in action.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Miyu’s Terrible Decisions

When Julian offered Miyu a chance to rejoin him of her own free will, I was disappointed that Miyu planned to accept this and return to captivity. Had she done so, this time things would have been far worse for her. So yay to Ilya for stopping that.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Where Miyu really screwed up is in how she crushed Erika. Seriously, I almost yelled at the TV when Miyu told Erika they weren’t friends. To me, it didn’t make sense because Miyu seemed to care about Erika, understanding the child’s messed up situation.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

As I’ve mentioned before, Erica is an innocent child. She has been raised in a sea of darkness, evil, and corruption. As such, she doesn’t see these things as the horrible things they are, but rather she sees them as normal things. That’s why some of the things that Ilya and Miyu say confuse Erika. However, because she is young, I think there’s still a chance to save her.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Or rather, I thought there was a chance to save her until Miyu kicked Erika off the edge of the cliff and into the open jaws of hell. Until that moment, Erika was on the edge of the knife. Miyu seems to have insured that Erika would fall into darkness. Then Julian adds to this by drowning his sister in the black goo.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Erika (or Erica)

After I saw Erica die inside from being betrayed by Miyu, I didn’t know what to expect from her. It did not surprise me that Julian and Beatrice were there to help Erica’s entrance into the gates of hell. After all, they are making sure Erika can never be saved. (I keep switching how I spell her name. 😛 )

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

What did surprise me is that Julian drowned her in the evil black goo. This act caused a bunch of failed Heroic Spirits, made from the evil goo, to emerge. Does this mean that Erica is a Lesser Grail?

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Darius and Julian

Back when Darius was first introduced to us in episode 6, I noticed that he transformed. At the time, I thought he might have some Class Card. Over the last few episodes, we hadn’t witnessed any other transformations, so I forgot about it. That said, when Ilya used Rule Breaker to destroy the Darius shell and Julian emerged, suddenly things made sense.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Now I understand why Beatrice basically worships Julian. He has always been her true master. I now see Beatrice as a willing and loving bond servant, bound for life to the service of Julian and the Ainsworth family. It is similar for Angelica, though she doesn’t show the emotions that Beatrice does.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

It also explains the insanity noted in Darius. Julian is truly insane and evil. The fact that he would use magic to go in the guise of his dead father just adds to the creep factor for this guy.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Julian is also insanely powerful. Were it not for his insanity, Julian should have already mopped the floor and been rid of Ilya and company. His displacement magic is just incredible. He is able to easily destroy Class Cards. (Sad there’s no more Medea Caster.) And then he’s able to hide something as massive as that cube in subspace (or something) and just pull it out at will.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Tanaka and the Cube

Speaking of the cube, suddenly Tanaka’s scribble makes sense. She was drawing the cube’s emergence on the wall. Now the question is, “Did she predict that the cube would emerge, or did she always know about it?” Miyu seemed to know about it, so the answer would seem to be the later, but with as mysterious as Tanaka is, it could be the former.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

I’ve no idea what that massive cube Julian pulls from the sky is. However, I couldn’t help but think, “Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.” 😉 As such, I want to see Tanaka show up and resist. 😀

Failed Heroic Spirits

This seems like an odd thing to me. I will admit that I’m not that well versed on the normal summoning of Heroic Spirits. I know that Artoria Saber is a bit unique in that she participated in two Holy Grail Wars as Saber. But the way things were described, any Heroic Spirit that failed to obtain the Holy Grail is now a corrupted, evil, monstrous thing. That surprised me a great deal, especially since there are so many of them.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

The Moments Don’t Work

Since there were a number of reunions in this episode, it is understandable that there is a desire for everyone to have a moment. Rin and Luvia got their moment, which was mostly to complain. Ilya and Miyu got their moment. Miyu and Sapphire got their moment. You get the picture.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

The problem is that the action and pacing all stop so that folks can have their moment. This makes for an unbelievable situation. In the previous episode, I saw a reason for Angelica not going all out on Ilya and Kuro. Here, especially after Darius was injured and Julian appeared, Beatrice and Angelica should have made them pay. There’s no reason for the villains to allow the heroes to have these moments.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

Yes, I know Beatrice made a comment about the moment Ilya and Miyu had, but her subsequent attack was announced ahead of time and it really wasn’t all that much. Indeed, Beatrice was pretty worthless for as ruthless as she’s been shown in the past. Angelica wasn’t much better.

Conclusion

Man, I’m sure I could write a ton more about this episode. I didn’t even discuss Gil-kun. However, I don’t have the time to do that. Instead, we can discuss things in the comments, for those interested in doing so. Just be warned that it might take me a day or two to make a response.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10

In the end, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! 10 is an action packed episode that is also packed with plot. It suffers from some minor pacing issues whenever the heroes need to have their moments. Beyond that, it is a quite good episode.

  1. Well the pacing problems is cause they crammed 4 chapters into it. 6 remain and 2 episodes. 3 per episode, But these last 2 are going to be soo epic and awesome with Shirou and some other reveals and twists.

As for Erika dont just write her off as innocent completely. (not enough information is given about her even in the present chapters of the flashback arc but she is not what she seems)

As for why Miyu was going to rejoin Julian will be shown in the next episode, not spoiling anything i hope but that mud is like an ultimatum for her and i think she realizes it. Still it was nice for Illya to stop her.

Since there is one chapter after the next 6 before the flashback arc they might put it as a OVA and for Season 5 well unknown what they will do with the flashback arc, but the current manga chapter ended it so the next chapter coming out at end of month will hopefully be the next arc.

Which means they don’t have time for these “moments” to be had. 😉

Well, based on what I’ve seen so far, she’s just in a twisted, evil environment. But if she is evil, then why did Miyu seem to care for the girl? Erika’s actions seem based on a desire to not be alone, combined with the darkness she sees as normal. But, it will be interesting to see where it goes.

Anyway, the pacing issues were a minor problem for me. The episode was really good.

      • Ok they did not include one thought from Miyu right after she said that Erika is not her friend.
Miyu thinks: Erika can’t live without Ainsworth protection

Also the chapter revealing Julian and the cube is actually really short only 9 pages and one page is not included

I liked the alteration to ending, nice touch.
Still think that the opening song is sub standard, the ending song, encapsulate’s the theame and tone perfectly. Wished they were switched.

I hold concerns about the parallel dimension aspect, this season introduced. Hopefully, it doesn’t become the source of convenient writing. EG Super Omega Saiyan mode, that appears out of nowhere and helps Illya takedown Alpha Evil God Gilgamesh. Both of Which came from an entirely different dimension, that we’ve never nor heard off.

But, that is my Naruto/ Bleach finale narrative PTSD kicking in.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I have to admit that I skip the OP and the ED. The Sweetness and Lightning OP is the first anime song I’ve heard in a long while that prompted me to buy it.

But, that is my Naruto/ Bleach finale narrative PTSD kicking in.

      😆 Understood.

I don’t feel that will be a problem. The mangaka is operating within the Nasuverse rules established by Type-Moon. Yes, being an alternate universe, the Ainsworth have proven very powerful via Flash Air. And the Borg Cube might be a game changer. However, I just get the feeling it won’t get Super Saiyan. 😉

After watching the last two episodes and reading your previous comment on Angelica’s behavior, something popped in my mind about Julian, Tanaka’s “counterfeiter” charge and the way the story has developed so far.

What if the whole world dying and the need to save it through Miyu’s death is an enormous play -Julian’s play – in which his servants, his family, Illya and her friends, are just actors? A play that is needed to create the legend of his father Darius, a true hero of justice who sacrifices the few (the one, Miyu) to save the many (the whole world). A play where Illya and friends have to fight and shine as powerful enemies to make Darius’ final victory even greater, so they cannot be killed too early/quickly.

After all Tanaka said Darius/Julian was a “counterfeiter”, so it is possible that his goal is to counterfeit the world’s history to make his father a true heroic spirit – the hero who saves the world, despite him being dead – and make him access the throne of heroes.

If you look at how Angelica acts, she truly believes in the Ainthsworth’s mission to save the world. Julian on the contrary is mostly obsessed with the “legend” that is being produced.

The way Illya fought Julian with two cards at once (one saber install and one caster include) actually broke the rules that Julian had imagined for his play and resulted in a fatal wound to his plan. The fact that Darius was actually Julian was not supposed to be revealed because this destroys the legend he was building.

This might also explain why Beatrice and Angelica didn’t react. That was not supposed to happen, it was not part of the plot imagined by Julian. Illya’s Rule Breaker actually broke the play and Julian was momentarily unable to give directions, thus leaving his two familiars to face an unexpected development they were not prepared for.

Mmmm… I didn’t like how they compressed everything on this episode… At the start of this season I thought that there will be problems adapting 3rei. But as the episodes rolled It was fine… until this chapter. I sincerely thought that the way this chapter ended was the cliffhanger point of the season, the last chapter.

But they started the “Unlimited -GIVE MIYU BACK!- Works” here, so I don’t know how they plan to follow it. Another season seems unlikely to happen unless they wait 2 years as there are not enough manga material, unless they play the comedy filler loli-ecchi-card for half the season, and then they go to the darkest and deepest pit of fateservice that follows.

The best option is a movie, and the middle point are OVAs.

Maybe they adapt something completely absurd as the Fate/Grand Order collaboration? I don’t know what the game is, but apparently is a Fate multiverse conjunction. With all the incarnations of the different Fate universes mixed with new servants, heroes, etc… And it has an event featuring Illya 3rei, with some kind of animated sequence…

PD: If the Ainsworths are the Borg, Illya’s team is the Species 8472? Haha. They came from another universe after all…

    • its not over there are 2 episodes and 6 chapters remaining till the end of the arc before the flashback arc. and if they are doing a fourth season then the author may need to stop going monthly and continue the story if they need to be ready for next summer , as for flashback arc maybe a movie or a special OVA series.

      • ctrn says:

Exactly. That’s why I thought that this season could be ending with the events of this episode.

Maybe I wasn’t clear: I thought that the events of this week’s episode were going to be used to fill the last three chapters of this season.
And the remaining manga chapters were going to be used as a strong start for the (then probable) next season.

To me Shirou appearing was the right cliffhanger moment, as it leaves something to start the next season and gives enough time to the mangaka to generate (and probably conclude) the story.

The fighting in this episode could be more action appealing and better developed, before Shirou enters the scene. That’s why Astro said that “The Moments Don’t Work”. This being anime, the animation could add something epic to these Heroic Spirits fight against Kuro, Illya, Bazzet and the rest….

        • Well I will admit the action and art has not been as awesome as the previous seasons, unless they are saving the budget for last 2 episodes, but they are being pretty faithful to the manga like a straight adaptation, i will admit also they did feel rushed (4 chapters at once is tricky)
Only real problem im having is the music this season, i loved the previous composer’s work but this one has had some decent stuff but mostly not, he better at least make a new EMIYA ver for next episode lol.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Mmmm… I didn’t like how they compressed everything on this episode…

Heh. I’m guessing that if I had read the manga, I’d feel the same way. Was anything cut?

PD: If the Ainsworths are the Borg, Illya’s team is the Species 8472? Haha.

      Ha!ha! 😀

      • andmeuths says:

Some lines of dialogue here and there mostly. They also changed the introduction of Miyu-verse Shirou, truncating a few lines here and there. Also, the scene where Illya ties the picture of Julian Beatrice was fan-girling over, to the appearance of Julian and comes to a horrifying realization of what she really saw in Beatrice room. In the previous episodes, they shortened the first ambush Beatrice made on Illya and Tanaka in Episode 2 from the source material, and if memory serves, the Gilgamesh vs Angelica fight.

Had they paced things more slowly, we might have ended the season with Angelica asking Illya to choose between the world and Miyu, which was what some manga-readers thought could have been the ending point. Now we are passed that point, they are probably rushing to the next natural ending point; or even up to the end of this current battle.

The Mangaka just ended the arc that follows this one, and went on a one month hiatus. Presumably, to write the Fate/Grand Order collab and to illustrate the art-work. The next chapter is due this month I believe, which should give us another 9 – 12 chapters by this time next year. But I don’t think 9-12 chapters is enough to wrap up Fate/Prisma Drei; though I might be wrong. If I’m wrong, the fifth season might well synchronize with the last published chapter of Fate/Prisma Drei.

And of course, they could take the Herz approach, although I don’t think we’d be getting slightly ecchi Slice of Life comedy with Illya’s friends with those chapters. There are side Drei chapters that do not involve Illya’s friends or Illya herself, but I don’t think they are enough to fill the shortfall in chapters as things stand right now.

Past that, the only way for us to get an annual Fate/Prisma Illya anime, is for Prisma 4ier to be a weekly. I do think that Fate/Prisma Illya 3rei does have the sales and ratings to justify a weekly with the sequel (with the cost of additional assistants and such required) though as sales apparently are at an all time high with 3rei…. but I won’t be surprised if 4ier is still monthly. Certainly, the sheer number of unexplored plot-threads that has been raised, and could be possibly be explored, can likely justify a weekly 4ier.

  5. worldendDominator says:

You got Sakura Saber and Saber Lily confused. Illya’s Install is the latter.

It is weird how they had to rush this episode, but still added some stuff (the part where Darius attacks Illya with Noble Phantasms).
