KILL la KILL Episode 22 (“Look, you stupid bastard. You’ve got no arms left!”)

キルラキル ep. 22 SPOILER Review
KILL la KILL episode 22

Synopsis:

KILL la KILL Episode 22Nui frees herself from Ryuuko’s scissor blade, now having both halves of the giant scissors. Mako tosses Senketsu to Ryuuko, avoiding Nui’s blades, where he is donned by Ryuuko. Ryuuko battles Nui citing Mako and Satsuki having worn Senketsu as why it now fits her so well, and citing the other goofy folks doing what they can to help her, so she’s going to save them. Ryuuko gets both scissor blades from Nui, who in turn attempts to take control over the Nudist Beach crowd. Ryuuko slices up Nui’s controlling strings, allowing Nui to believe she had an opening to take out Ryuuko. Instead, Nui is fooled by Ryuuko’s decoy and has her arms chopped off, Senketsu absorbing the Seimeisen within them.

KILL la KILL Episode 22Nui is enraged as a host of COVERS drop down to protect her. Rei flies in on a Chinook to rescue Nui as the Elite Four, Tsumugu, and Mikisugi extract the people from the uniforms. Seeing Hakodate, Fukuroda, and others from Honnouji Gakuin among the rescued, Satsuki orders the medical unit to help.  Houka has the Seimeisen threads gathered and sent to his lab. Meanwhile, an enraged and bleeding Nui goes off of Rei for pulling her out of the fight. When reminded that Nui shouldn’t have been in a fight at all, but was supposed to be working on completing Shinra-Kouketsu, Nui regains her composure, seals off her wounds, then promises Rei will pay for her lip. Rei says she will pay whatever price, providing Shinra-Kouketsu gets finished.

KILL la KILL Episode 22Ryuuko is not happy with “KIRYUUIN Satsuki-sama” and wants one all out punch to see if Satsuki is worthy of fighting by her side. Satsuki agrees to this, but Ryuuko’s first punch is absorbed by Ira and her second by Uzu. Both chastise Ryuuko for her weak punches as the entire Elite Four form a barrier in front of Satsuki-sama. With that, Ryuuko realizes that Satsuki is being helped by idiots the same way Ryuuko has been helped. Satsuki confesses how she used Ryuuko and trained her for her own purposes, but now understands her methods were no different from their mother’s. As such, she gives a bow, an apology, and a request that Ryuuko help. Ryuuko accepts, saying it is time to take out their mother.

KILL la KILL Episode 22After a croquette eating party, Satsuki has Iori, who now has a 3-star “Doc Ock” Goku uniform, repair and modify Junketsu for her to wear. That night, Satsuki explains the entire Seimeisen plan to cover the earth, which is how they reproduce. Houka hacks into the Revocs satellite and sees that Ragyou, still riding the Seimeisen main body, is heading for Honnouji Gakuin in order to use the transmitter to activate the Seimeisen all over the globe. Hadaka no Taiyou-maru comes under attack, so Satsuki puts Mikisugi in charge locally while she and Ryuuko head out to fight. However, giant, battle COVERS units come from the water. A wardrobe drops from the sky and Mako emerges in a 2-star Goku uniform to protect the others.

Thoughts/Review:

Yeah, yeah, I know I’ve used that Monty Python quote before as a tag in a UQ Holder chapter review, but it is a good one, so why not use it again? ^_~

KILL la KILL Episode 22

UQ Holder has looked at how immortals get cocky because they cannot be killed. Ironically, in this episode, Nui is in the same boat. She cannot be killed, so she’s very cocky on the battlefield. After all, who’s going to stop her? You’d think that after Isshin took her eye, she’d be less cocky. Instead, she goes into a fight she had no business being in, and loses her arms in the process.

KILL la KILL Episode 22

Even without arms, that insane rage within Nui is pretty scary, as seen in her promise to punish Rei. The fact that Nui stitched up her own wounds with her mouth, and worked on Shinra-Kouketsu in a similar fashion tells me she can back up that threat with no problem.

KILL la KILL Episode 22

I loved the resolution moment between Ryuuko and Satsuki. As I had predicted, Satsuki had been testing and training Ryuuko to see if Ryuuko was worthy to fight with her. Now the tables are turned and Ryuuko wants to test Satsuki to see if she’s worthy to fight with Ryuuko.  And then there was that adorable moment when Ryuuko tried to address Satsuki as “oneechan” (or something similar), but couldn’t. ^_^

KILL la KILL Episode 22

I also loved how the Elite Four showed their honor and loyalty to Satsuki by defending her. To be willing to die for someone is something special.

KILL la KILL Episode 22

While I’m giving out the love, Mako returning in her 2-star Goku uniform was awesome in that it was completely unexpected. Seeing that the wardrobe dropped to the deck of Hadaka no Taiyou-maru was in Iori’s lab, it is safe to say that he remade the uniform for Mako, who disappeared with her family after the party.

KILL la KILL Episode 22

I’m glad characters like Hakodate and Fukuroda weren’t forgotten. I suspect that they’ll be in the final battle, along with the Elite Four, complete with new Goku uniforms.

KILL la KILL Episode 22

I haven’t commented on it much, but after this episode, I feel I’ve got to say something. Back in episode 1, I made this remark.

I do think that Trigger is being influenced by Marvel Comics though. Seriously, this city that Honnouji Academy is in smacks heavily of Madripoor in many ways, such as the thuggery at the lower elevations, and apparently more elite stuff at the higher elevations.

KILL la KILL Episode 22

Since then, it has been very obvious that Trigger has indeed been influenced by Marvel Comics. The Nudist Beach battle “garb” has the red circle-X logo that the X-Men use. Ryuuko often uses claws from Senketsu that come out like Wolverine’s claws.  Then in this episode, Iori gets a 3-star Goku uniform, smacking heavily of Doctor Octopus. ^_^

KILL la KILL Episode 22

Finally, it wasn’t much, but there was a tiny moment in the Ira-Mako romance, namely Ira stealin a glance at Mako during the croquette party. ^_^

KILL la KILL Episode 22

So, a fun episode with extra spewing blood (and tears) from missing arms added on for good measure.

Although it doesn’t come from Marvel Comics but Image Comics, Iori’s collar, color scheme and the lower half of her mask are also heavily reminiscent of Todd Mc Farlane’s Spawn. Who, by the way, wears a living costume granting him part of his powers.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

That may well be an influence as well, though I’ve never read Spawn.

…Iori’s collar, color scheme and the lower half of her mask…

His. Iori is a guy. He’s not even a trap. He’s voiced by one of the more successful old-guard male voice-actors (Yuji Ueda). Don’t know why so many people think he’s a girl…

  2. Andarion says:

Not sure if you noticed but look at Ira’s plate during the party. Mako croquettes!

I lol at the fact that senketsu reuniting gattai with ryuko at the start was quite a literal reminiscence of lagaan and gurren gattai from gurren lagaan. (Getting that scene running through my head of shimon declaring kamina is dead and combining the two mecha to fight the four deva)

Nui has more of less lost it after she lost her arms and I feel she got what see deserved and we finally understand why her eye didnt regenerate and why senketsu can absorb life fibre. When both blades are used life fibre regen is negated and senketsu absorbs the fibres that were cut.

Also loving the sisters going into battle dual wielding with the same powers standing on equal footing.

So with the final battle approaching I have a feeling satsuki might die or get easily incapacitated and ryuko will self sacrifice to bring ragyou down with her or ends up defeating her but going missing and living life like a hermit/stray cat (looks at shimon at the end of gurren lagaan)

The four deva are going be upgraded with new uniform whilst the two star uniformed students will hold down the fort until the four deva can make a show. Also shinra kotetsu will be a spectacular show with three kamui users battling it out and a crazed nui getting taken out I hope or cast aside

      Ditto. ^_^

      I hope you are wrong about Satsuki and Ryuuko buying the farm. ^_^;;;

That’s pretty much how I see things goin.

Well considering how kamina and kitten were killed off in gurren lagaan… I’m surprise the producer/writer of kill la kill haven’t given one of the characters an epic death sequence.

Also hoping there isn’t some limit breaking life fibre synchronise/over ride like gurren where they went all super tengen toppa transformation to make a galaxy size mecha of pure spiral energy

Did you notice that Gamagoori’s croquette’s had the appearance of Mako’s head? Looks like Sukuyo knows the score. 😀

Also, do you think Iori always had a Three-Star Uniform, or is that new? I’m thinking he always had it, but it was never shown as it’s a non-combat model.

    • Aki says:

      Most likely that’s the case

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

*lol* That’ll soon be “mother” to Ira. ^_^

Also, do you think Iori always had a Three-Star Uniform, or is that new? I’m thinking he always had it, but it was never shown as it’s a non-combat model.

I think that’s highly possible since he was part of Satsuki’s trusted inner circle.

He may have always had it, but he never wore it until they left Nudist Beach HQ, maybe until the rescue of Satsuki, since the first time we see him in it is when she’s drinking tea on the Naked Sun. You can tell the difference in his uniforms because the original has a black undershirt and downturned collars, and the new one is barechested with considerably larger upturned collars.

Of course, now I look again, and apparently he only wore that barechested version in that one scene, and is back to the black undershirt in the scene where he transforms. So, no idea…

  5. quigonkenny says:

Itadaka no Taiyou-maru comes under attack…

That’s Hadaka no Taiyou-maru, actually. Naked Sun.

  6. Andarion says:

    Playing with Monty Python
Rei: What are you gonna do, bleed on me?
Nui: Damn straight I will! I will drown you in my blood bitch!

Nui sure didn’t learn her lesson, first Isshin, then perfectly synchroed Ryuuko. Then again she did think that she could get a cheap shot at Ryuuko after distracting her, HOW she thought piercing Ryuuko’s neg was gonna help her is beyond me. Ryuuko at the moment is at the level of Ragyo and Nui when it comes to regeneration after all. Maybe she just lost it after she have lost her brainwashed Ryuuko? There is also the thing that so far any attacks by Ryuuko were completely ineffective, Nui probably thought that it would stay that way.

Crazy Nui was scary but when she went all creepy calm was when I got really scared… I only hope she stays enraged, an angry enemy makes mistakes after all. Also I can’t help but call her Tyrranosaurus Nui in the scene where she works on the Kamui XD

Yes the scene between Ryuuko and Satsuki was great. Ryuuko realized that they are not so different after all. Both were lonely and against the entire world their entire lives. Ryuuko learnt that she had people who loved her and wanted to protect her, Satsuki realized it only now seeing her Elite Four snap at Ryuuko. Neither is alone any more and doesn’t have to fight against the world without support. I wrote up a little theory on symbolism of that scene if you’d be interested
    http://www.reddit.com/r/KillLaKill/comments/20gzvl/spoiler_ep_22_the_symbolism_of_the_punching_scene/

Also two things about that scene. I was highly amused by the fact that Inumuta and Nonon joined only After the punching was done, I can see Nonon saying that she’ll let the muscleheads do the hard work and she’ll join for the cool part.
Also when Satsuki bows before Ryuuko and wind changes I think it was Elite Four and Mako blowing in Ryuuko’s direction to make the wind XD

Personally I was expecting Mako to return to the battlefield, the second ending was foreshadowing it by saying that Mako will make a stand together with Ryuuko, I was still immensely pleased when she appeared. At first I thought that Iori is delivering the new 3-Star uniforms but then that FIST came out and I was all “Fight Club President is back!” I got the chills when Mako declared her resolve to protect the Naked Sun. So much ass will be kicked.

It’s nice that the various presidents Ryuuko defeated in the first half will be returning, it would be a shame if they were just some monsters-of-the-week.

Iori also seems to be inspired by Spawn.

I have to say that one of my favourite scenes was the bit where Ryuuko sat away from the party and had a little heart-to-heart with Senketsu. It was sweet when they bickered and Ryuuko teased him about feeling lonely.

And then, bite Rei’s legs off. ^_~

HOW she thought piercing Ryuuko’s neg was gonna help her is beyond me.

I figured Nui had some kind of paralyzing agent. Ryuuko appeared to be doing the old ninja decoy maneuver.

Crazy Nui was scary but when she went all creepy calm was when I got really scared…

Her eyes were twitching while she was “calm”.

      I’ll have to remember to read that when I get home. That site is blocked at work. ^_^;;;;

I thought that is what they were, so yeah, it is nice that they aren’t forgotten and that Satsuki cares about them.

      Yeah, that was a nice scene. Not sure why I didn’t comment on it myself. ^_^;;;
