Fairy Tail Zero chapter 02

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Mavis, now thirteen, is reminded by Zeira that they have to clean the library on Tenrou Island. The two are the only people living on the island and as they work in the library, Zeira senses that someone is coming. She goes to hide, leaving Mavis to face Yuriy Dreyar, who’s just arrived in the library. He’s shocked to find that someone still lives on the island.

When Yuriy says he’s an ecologist, Mavis accuses him of lying, explaining how she knew he wasn’t being truthful. Yuriy decides to be truthful and admit to being a treasure hunter looking for the Tenrou Jade. Mavis knows of this jewel, but will not give it away. Since Yuriy doesn’t want to harm a little girl, he challenges her to a game of wits, whereby if she wins, Yuriy and his team leave, but if he wins, she has to cough up the information. She’s not buying this until he offers to let her meet fairies.

Yuriy explains the rules of the game where one guesses truths about the other. After a practice game where Yuriy says he won, he produces an artifact to create a judgement field. Within in, no one can speak lies. The field will also force Mavis to keep her promise to reveal the location of the island’s treasure. She’s very pleased by this, citing how she’d actually won the previous game. Further, she announces that whether she goes first or second, she’ll win the game in one turn.

Thoughts/Review:

After the melodramatic time that Mavis had, right down to the apparent death of Zeira, we suddenly see Zeira alive and kicking in this chapter.

As I see it, there are two options here. First is that Zeira didn’t actually die in the first chapter. Mashima-sensei never did specifically say that Zeira was dead. Mavis’s actions implied that she thought Zeira was dead.

The second option is that Zeira is dead, but she’s a ghost. After all, Mavis was already long dead when she was introduced in Fairy Tail. Maybe it is a property of the island to keep a soul around. However, if that’s the case, then why wasn’t Zeira there when Fairy Tail showed up on the island?

That aside, Mavis continues to be such an awesome character. How can I not like her a bunch. She seems easily conned with the idea of getting to see fairies, but she’s as sharp as they come. So it will be fun seeing how she overcomes this game challenge and ultimately founds the Fairy Tail guild.

So far, things are pretty interesting. Onto the third chapter.
