Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files 08
ロード・エルメロイⅡ世の事件簿 -魔眼蒐集列車 Grace note- 08
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis
Trisha’s murder causes Olga to lash out at Karbo due to his being a member of the Church. Karbo puts her to sleep, then performs a magical autopsy on Trisha. Waver performs his own magical autopsy and deduces Karbo’s reasons for being on the Mystic Eyes train. However, neither can discover who killed Trisha. Meanwhile, Olga wakes and is suspicious of Waver’s motives in helping her. Waver gives an explanation.
Waver leaves Gray with Olga. They have a chat while Caules and Waver do more investigating. Waver encounters Adashino, whom he is suspicious of. She informs him that the sponsor for the old mage Gueldoa Davenant and Trevor Codrington, two individuals in previous cases for Waver. Elsewhere, Luvia and Kairi continue their investigative work for Reines.
Meanwhile, Waver and Gray chat outside the train car. A storm moves in with red lightning. The pair go to the roof of the train, where a woman, who works for the thief that stole Waver’s relic, stands. She and Gray clash, causing Waver to identify her as a Servant and a Ghost Rider familiar. Gray absorbs some mana from the Servant, causing the Servant to activate her Mystic Eyes, Noble Color of Coercion. Gray is coerced to attack Waver, who’s glasses protect him from Mystic Eyes. Add purges the coercion effect.
The Servant summons a Noble Phantasm, similar to Iskandar’s Gordius Wheel. The Servant identifies herself as Hephaestion and attacks. Gray is about to unleash her Noble Phantasm, but Waver stops her, using his own magic to defend. Suddenly, the battle is over and Caules is rescuing them. Waver is seriously injured, so Olga provides a jar of Druid Elixir to heal Waver. Gray and Caules have a chance to chat about his life.
Thoughts/Review
Wow. I have to say, this series gets better and better. And Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files 08 certainly was a good episode.
Murder Mystery
There are two elements at work in the story presented by Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files 08. The first is the murder mystery around Trisha. At first, it seemed odd to me that a murderer would target Trisha. I understood that she has Mystic Eyes, and the murderer could have picked her for her Mystic Eyes. But in my mind, they couldn’t have sold them or anything.
However, selling they eyes wasn’t likely the point. And whoever killed Trisha did so for her specific Mystic Eyes. So clearly, they want them for a purpose. However, is it tied to the second story element?
A Servant Appears
I don’t know if this series is considered canon or not. If so, someone was able to summon a Servant outside of the control of the Holy Grail system that summons the Servants we know and love in Fate/stay night. Oddly enough, this Servant didn’t identify her class. However, I gather that she was summoned using the stolen Iskandar relic. And since she had a Noble Phantasm similar to Iskandar’s, I’d say she was a Rider class.
Still, regardless of her class, she did the unusual thing of identifying herself as Hephaestion. Normally, Servants don’t reveal their true identity. So I’m not sure why she did unless she figured to confuse Waver with her Noble Phantasm and connection with Iskandar.
Speaking of her Noble Phantasm, I know that Waver called it Gordius Wheel, which was Iskandar’s NP. But his NP was a chariot, drawn by a couple of live bulls. Hephaestion’s NP is a chariot, but drawn by undead, winged creatures. That’s why I don’t think it is the same Noble Phantasm, but maybe I’m wrong.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
Let me wrap up my review of Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files 08 with some final thoughts.
- Luvia and Kairi didn’t have much to do in this episode. However, it seems their investigation is pointing to an insider being the one who stole Waver’s relic. However, I can’t believe Reines, for all her mischief, would be the thief.
- Speaking of the thief, I guess they are the one who summoned Hephaestion. I wonder if it is someone we’ve met before.
- Although Adashino continues to act suspicious, I don’t think she’s the thief or the Master of Hephaestion.
- Melvin gets a cameo return to the series. I had kind of forgotten about him.
- I feel badly for Olga. But at least she hasn’t met a horrible fate yet.
- I liked getting more info about Caules family.
In the end, Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files 08 was a very enjoyable episode.
