Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Four years ago, Kurenai (Hotaru) is fretting over her junior high school entrance exam. A girl in a mask gives her some pointers that help her. That evening, Kurenai meets with girl to chat about the test and such. It is here that the girl reveals her name to be GEKKOU Kaguya.

In the near present, Jessie, Kurenai, and Kaguya are eating lunch on a bench. Jessie and Kurenai are stunned at Kaguya’s choice of eating whole cucumbers for lunch. Kurenai asks if Kaguya’s parents can make a bento, but Kaguya says she was abandoned. As such, Kurenai reflects on how great Kaguya was at fixing things. She also notes at how messy Kaguya tends to be, even though Kaguya knows where everything is in her room.

Later, Usa asks Kaguya about why she wears a mask, leading Kaguya to make a sarcastic remark. Still later, Kurenai talks to Kaguya about filling out their career selections. Kaguya is not interested, but Kurenai wants to be in music. Kaguya praises Kurenai for this, revealing she knows Kurenai’s secret YouTube channel.

At Kurenai’s prompting, Kaguya reveals that she has a dream where someone is crying, begging to end “that person’s life.” In the image, we see Tsukasa as the one wailing over their wish.

Thoughts/Review:

Egad. As Hata-sensei is wont to do at times, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 119 was a plot-driven chapter that causes the mind to reel.

Tsukasa and Kaguya Speculation

It is hard to speculate what Hata-sensei will do. Nevertheless, based on the events of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 119, I felt like theorizing.

There has been a lot of speculation that Tsukasa might be Kaguya-hime of legend. That’s because it seems fairly clear that Tsukasa is immortal. The circumstanced of her immortality have been the subject of conjecture. And that’s why ultimately, folks just decided that Tsukasa was Kaguya-hime.

But then in chapter 109, Hata-sensei actually introduced a character called Kaguya. So that kinda ended the notion of Tsukasa being Kaguya. Then in last week’s chapter, Kaguya encountered Tsukasa and revealed she knew Tsukasa.

So based on everything we know, I think that Kaguya came to Earth from the moon, after hearing Tsukasa wishing for death. Kaguya may have conditionally granted the wish, providing Tsukasa met a requirement. And that requirement would turn out to be Nasa. That’s why Tsukasa looked horrified at Kaguya’s question regarding the long journey. Now that Tsukasa has found her soul mate, I doubt she wants to die.

Unanswered Questions

So here’s a list of unanswered questions that I have. If you have more, please leave them in the comments.

  • How is Tsukasa immortal?
  • What made Tsukasa wish for death? (I think of a statement in the Doctor Who episode, “The Five Doctors”, where the first Doctor states that immortality is a curse, not a blessing.)
  • How much do Tokiko and Chitose actually know about Tsukasa? I’m sure they know she’s an immortal. But do they even know the whole story?
  • When did Kaguya come to Earth?
  • Why is Kaguya bothering to go through middle school and high school? I get that she wants knowledge, but she’s already a genius. So middle school and high school don’t seem like something she should be doing?
  • Is Hata-sensei about to end things on us, or is he merely changing things to resolve the plot aspects, but continue with the newlywed couple life?

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 119 is a shocking reminder that this mostly fluff manga does have a plot, and seemingly a very interesting one at that.
